Hema Malini recalls how her blooming off-screen romance with Dharmendra added to their crackling chemistry as 'Veeru' and 'Basanti' in 'Sholay'
While the film remains special for the cinegoers for many reasons, it's also special for
Hema Malini
and
Dharmendra
because jus like their on-screen characters, love bloomed for them even off-screen. This furter made 'Sholay' more exciting to watch even for the audience.
In a recent conversation, Hema Malini opened up about how their off-screen love story subtly intertwined with their on-screen magic. The actress said during a chat with NDTV, 'He was very fond of me as I was of him.
We had a lovely relationship because we had worked on so many movies together. We shared so much with each other — sometimes they were problems, sometimes it was happiness. Eventually, friendship led to love, maybe that's what was reflected on the big screen too, in the film.
It's natural, isn't it? A lovely friendship ultimately leads to love and care for each other.'
In 'Sholay', Hema's 'Basanti' became a cultural icon — the bubbly tangewali whose wit, innocence, and spirit still have audiences smiling.

She recalled with affection the very first scene she shot for the film, the now-famous 'Mandir' sequence with Dharmendra. The Dream Girl Of Bollywood, recalled, 'The Mandir scene was the first scene I shot. It was a lot of fun. So innocently, Basanti was accepting everything and answering back to Lord Shiva.
Everything was very different. Shooting happened outdoors in hot summers; I don't think we shot anything indoors.
Even Ramanagara in Karnataka, where the climax scene happens, is as it was. They have not built anything there.'
Dharmendra and Hema Malini have worked together in many movies like 'Tum Haseen Main Jawan', 'Seeta Aur Geeta', 'Alibaba Aur 40 Chor' apart from 'Sholay'. The film directed by

'War 2' box office collection day 1 (LIVE): The Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR starrer off to a great start, but Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' dominates at the moment
'War 2' has finally released in theatres and the film has got mixed reviews by the audience so far but it is off to a great start. The film is facing a huge competition from Rajinikanth 's 'Coolie' which has also released today and this is one of the biggest clashes of movies. 'War 2' starring Hrithik Roshan , Jr NTR and Kiara Advani has released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. While the pre-release ticket sales was not as high, just as the Telugu markets opened, the numbers from the advance bookings grew due to Jr NTR's presence as he's a huge star there. Thus, the film may be expected to do well in Telugu and Hindi both. It had collected Rs 16 crore gross already from the advance bookings. Hrithik calls Rajinikanth his 'first teacher' ahead of 'War 2' vs 'Coolie' clash As of now, as far as the net collections are concerned. Till 12 pm, 'War 2', has started off on a great note. As the collection so far is Rs 11.76 crore, according to Sacnilk. The film should have a day 1 number of atleast Rs 30-40 crore but time will tell if the numbers increase or decrease with spot bookings which will largely depend on positive word of mouth towards the film. Meanwhile, 'Coolie' starring Rajikinanth, Nagarjuna Akkineni , Aamir Khan , Shruti Haasan has made Rs 20.84 crore up till the same time. According to Box Office India, Trade analysts caution, that these numbers of 'War 2' don't yet point to an 'huge blockbuster type of weekend', the kind the industry hopes for with such big-budget spectacles. 'War 2' may look underwhelming when compared to some past juggernauts, but the ratio of advance sales to first-day collections has changed in recent years, making direct parallels tricky. Some previous 'big ones,' as the trade hints, even had 'advances which were tampered putting it in a nice way.' By contrast, War 2's advance numbers are twice that of recent big titles like 'Raid 2' and 'Housefull 5'. Eventually, it's the reviews and now the footfalls during the weekend which will eventually determine the film's fate. But at the moment it looks like, 'Coolie' is definitely on the upper side in terms of the numbers. Day 1 [1st Thursday] ₹ 11.76 Cr ** - Total ₹ 11.76 Cr "Get the latest news updates on Times of India, including reviews of the movie Coolie and War 2 ."
