Nissan turnaround plan under spotlight at shareholder meeting
It is anyone's guess whether new boss Ivan Espinosa will be able to halt the sharp decline at the carmaker, where shares have fallen 36% over the past year and dividend payments have been suspended. Nissan reported a $4.5bn (R80,235,495,000) net loss in the last financial year and there is no guarantee it will return to profit this year. So far it has declined to give a full-year earnings forecast.
Espinosa has laid out plans for big cuts, including closing seven plants and shedding a total of 20,000 jobs, or around 15% of Nissan's workforce. One Tokyo-based activist investor, Strategic Capital, thinks the overhaul should include Nissan taking action on its listed subsidiary.
Japanese companies are under increasing pressure from the Tokyo Stock Exchange and regulators to clear up "parent-child listings", which are seen as unfair to minority shareholders and a drag on governance.
In one prominent example, Toyota Motor this month unveiled plans to take private its listed subsidiary, Toyota Industries, in a complex, $33bn (R588,305,764,200) transaction that some shareholders have said undervalues the forklift operator.
Toyota likely took action because "it felt pressure from shareholders and thought it had to change", Tsuyoshi Maruki, CEO of Strategic Capital, said in an interview with Reuters on Monday. He said he hoped Nissan's management could also give the issue similar consideration.
Nissan owns 50% of Nissan Shatai, which manufactures cars for the carmaker. Strategic Capital owns 3.5% of Nissan Shatai. It has also acquired a small stake in Nissan, allowing it to submit proposals to the general meeting.
It has proposed Nissan change its articles of incorporation so it would be required to annually examine its relationship with listed subsidiaries and disclose what action, if any, it planned to take.

French firm teams up with JetZero on hydrogen-powered flight
A French technology start-up unveiled plans on Wednesday to work with clean-aircraft venture JetZero to explore a potential hydrogen-powered variant of its futuristic all-wing design. The move by SHZ Advanced Technologies is likely to rekindle a debate over the potential for zero-emission flight, six months after Europe's Airbus put the brakes on plans to develop the world's first hydrogen-powered airliner. California-based JetZero aims to challenge the traditional duopoly of Airbus and Boeing by developing a so-called blended wing-body aircraft, which it claims will be able to cut fuel consumption — and therefore carbon emissions — in half. JetZero and SHZ now plan to work together under a Nasa research programme to design systems capable of storing and distributing liquid hydrogen fuel, which could eliminate carbon emissions altogether and evolve into a variant of JetZero's Z4. Hydrogen is prized for its carbon-free emissions and high energy related to mass, which makes it lighter than normal fuel. However, it also takes up much more volume and must be cooled to -253°C, making storage a significant challenge. JetZero's blended wing-body design features a V-shaped fuselage that acts as a wing and reduces friction in the air, rather than the familiar wings and cylindrical fuselage. 'Due to the wider fuselage, the airframe is far more compatible with (liquid hydrogen) fuel tanks without sacrificing passenger seating, as a 'tube and wing' aeroplane would,' SHZ Advanced Technologies said on Wednesday. Airbus said in February it was slowing down efforts to produce a hydrogen-powered regional plane and dropped a target date of 2035, blaming a lack of supporting infrastructure. Boeing, by contrast, has been cool on the commercial viability of hydrogen flight altogether. The concept of a blended wing-body design has been around since the 1940s and led to the US B-2 bomber, as well as the X-48 research project between Boeing and Nasa about 18 years ago. JetZero is revisiting such designs as the aviation industry struggles to meet a target of net-zero emissions by 2050. Airbus has argued that combining such radical changes to the shape of a plane with an entirely new propulsion system would be too ambitious, and is focusing instead on hydrogen-based fuel cells inside a normal tubular aircraft configuration. But SHZ Advanced Technologies' co-founder Eric Schulz — a former senior executive at Rolls-Royce and Airbus — said JetZero would approach the task in two phases with the initial focus on a conventionally powered all-wing plane. Any hydrogen-based variant would come in a second step, he told Reuters. The French firm says it has developed hydrogen tanks that save space by avoiding the usual cylindrical shape needed for pressurised vessels and can fit more easily into the flowing contours of the Z4's fuselage. JetZero, whose backers include United Airlines, said in June it was on track to fly a full-scale prototype of the revolutionary 250-passenger aeroplane in 2027.

Airlink jet donation to Rhodesfield School takes aviation learning to new heights
In a landmark move aimed at transforming aviation education in Gauteng, Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane officially received a decommissioned Embraer 135 passenger jet from Airlink, Southern Africa's leading airline, at Rhodesfield Engineering School of Specialisation. The handover ceremony, held at the Kempton Park-based school, marked a significant milestone in township education, with Premier Lesufi hailing the donation as a 'historic moment' for learners who live near O.R. Tambo International Airport but have long been excluded from the aviation economy. The Embraer ERJ135 jet, which logged over 32,000 flight hours before being retired in 2022, will now serve as a hands-on training aid for learners enrolled in aviation studies at Rhodesfield. The school currently has 45 learners, including 13 girls studying aviation as their eighth matric subject. Principal Caroline Ngxanga welcomed the aircraft as an 'invaluable teaching aid' that will allow learners to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Premier Lesufi described the handover as a historic moment for township education: 'My dream was very simple: you cannot have a school a stone's throw from the airport while our children remain excluded from the economy of aviation. Today, Airlink has agreed to be a partner for life.'

Updated Nissan Magnite offers more safety at a lower price
Nissan South Africa has announced price cuts of between 4% and 10% across its Magnite range, along with a R10,000 cash rebate on selected model grades. The Japanese carmaker said the move supports its efforts to offer value-packed compact SUVs at more competitive prices in line with changing consumer demands. The latest turbocharged Magnite variants are fitted with the firm's force-fed 1.0l three-cylinder engine making 74kW and 160Nm of torque. Buyers can pair it to a five-speed manual or Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) transmission. Nissan claims the former offers a combined fuel consumption of 5.27l/100km, and the latter 6l/100km. The new Magnite is also among the safest compact SUVs on the market, thanks to a host of upgrades. With six airbags, advanced electronic stability control and other safety features, it achieved a five-star safety rating under Global NCAP's latest test protocols. Nissan has also bundled in three-point seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, ISOFIX child seat anchors, ABS brakes with EBD, hydraulic brake assist, vehicle dynamic control, traction control, hill start assist and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
