‘It's a dark time to be disabled in the UK right now'

Metro08-05-2025

TV presenter Sophie Morgan is calling for greater protections for the disabled community after a raft of 'inhumane' government cuts.
The Loose Women panellist, who also presented Crufts this year, told Metro that it is 'unbearable' and a 'dark and difficult time' for disabled people in the UK right now.
Sophie said the proposed changes to the welfare system aimed at saving £5bn by the end of 2030, which were announced in March, are a warning for what is to come next.
'I think it should be a wake-up call for Britain that if they can target the most vulnerable, anybody can become a victim of this government,' warned Sophie, who is paraplegic.
Speaking ahead of the Scope Awards, in which she has been shortlisted in the Celebrity Role Model category, the disability activist added that there was a 'dangerous rhetoric being peddled about disabled people always 'taking, taking, taking'.
But every disabled person I know wants to give back,' she said. 'We want to participate. We want to be part of the society.
'We want to be able to do all of the things that anyone else wants to do.
'We're not trying to be given handouts to do nothing.'
In 2003, Sophie suffered a spinal cord injury in a car crash when she was 18. She was left paralysed from the chest down and has used a wheelchair ever since.
At times like these, we need a bit of joy and light, and celebrate what we have managed to achieve.
She became a household name after coming second in BBC3's Britain's Missing Top Model, and has gone on to present numerous documentaries – not just on disability issues – as well as becoming a regular on Loose Women and The One Show, and hosting Channel 4's TV coverage of the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.
Currently living in California, the 40-year-old said that she has 'never felt less disabled.'
'I spent 20 years living in the UK as a disabled person, and I realised I was sort of living a half life where I couldn't go to any of the places I wanted to go,' she explained. 'They were so limited because it's so inaccessible.
'But then I got an opportunity to work with NBC and host the 2024 Paris Paralympics over here, so I moved to California about a year ago and I love it.
'I set up a production company called Making Space Media, and we're teaming up with Reese Witherspoon's production company, working up ideas around disability and centering women's narratives.
'It's very liberating living here.'

Talking about what needs to change back home in the UK, Sophie believes that better protections need to be put in place for the disabled community.
'I'd like us to overhaul what we call the Equalities Act. The fact that you only have to make a 'reasonable adjustment' to businesses and goods and services is not enough,' she said.
'We need to have stronger laws, so that we have something to protect us when we're discriminated against.

'It's one of the reasons why I moved to America, because I'm so tired of going into places and people saying 'this is an old building, you can't come in here'.'
Sophie, who has been voted one of the most influential disabled people in the UK as part of the Shaw Trust's Disability Power 100, added that she is keen to see more disability advocates on screen talking about the challenges the community face.
Metro is also the official media partner of 2025 Scope Awards that will take place next month.
The ceremony will celebrate the work disabled people and organisations are doing to bring about important change.
Hosted by the BAFTA-nominated actor Adam Pearson, unsung heroes, amazing achievements and the incredible accolades of the disabled community are all being honoured at the Kia Oval.
There are 38 nominees for the nine Scope Awards: Accessible Product, Celebrity Role Model, Community Group, Inclusive Workplace, Journalist, Marketing Campaign, Media Moment, Purple Pioneer and Social Media Influencer.
'We don't have enough disabled role models. I'd love to see more disabled heroes – and I don't mean Paralympians, I mean disabled people doing brilliant things in higher places,' she explained. 'I want to see disabled CEOs, disabled politicians, disabled leaders.'
One of her own role models is former police officer and wheelchair user Paula Craig MBE, who she met while she was in spinal rehabilitation and has since appeared on TV shows with. More Trending
'She is just so badass,' said Sophie. 'She was a detective and a wheelchair user. I was just blown away by what she did. So representations have always mattered for me.
'Those women who defy the odds, just do their own thing and make their own rules are so vital. And that's why the Scope Awards are important too.
'At times like these, we need a bit of joy and light, and celebrate what we have managed to achieve.
I've spent 20 years working hard to improve representation and shiftingperceptions around disability, so it's a really nice thing to have been recognised.'

Emmerdale killer John breathes a sigh of relief - but a twist follows

Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) caught John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) out in tonight's episode of Emmerdale. The couple recently returned from their honeymoon following a chaotic wedding ceremony. From Aaron's perspective, it was dramatic because his ex Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) returned. For John, he was on edge due to multiple opportunities arising that threatened to expose his murderous secrets. Aaron and John managed to tie the knot though but when they got back from their relaxing time away, they learnt of some worrying news. John had to put on his poker face again when he got told that Nate Robinson's (Jurell Carter) body had been found in the lake. Due to Nate being Aaron's family, John has opted for the approach of trying to support the Dingle clan as they grieve. In tonight's episode, John's focus shifted to something completely unrelated to Nate. As he looked through the post, he spotted a letter addressed to Aaron, from the prison. John immediately knew that it was from Robert and hid it in his pocket. Later, he went to open the envelope, but got caught by Aaron. Aaron read through the letter but put it in the bin shortly after. We know that his relationship with John means a great deal to him, as it helped him realise he can love someone else other than Robert. As Aaron reassured John, there was relief. Whenever we see John's insecurities highlighted, he usually does something to ensure he no longer feels that way. The difference here was that John wasn't able to do anything due to being spotted by Aaron, so he was simply a man fearing his partner would be tempted by their ex. Fresh heartache for Dee-Dee in Corrie as new Laila scenes leave her conflicted

Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) was recently stunned when she saw her brother James (Jason Callender) returning to Coronation Street – bringing baby Laila with him. Dee-Dee gave birth to Laila earlier this year. During the traumatic delivery she struggled to get the maternity unit staff to take her concerns seriously and eventually the baby had to have an emergency delivery. Dee-Dee almost died after losing a lot of blood and had to have a hysterectomy, meaning she can't have any more children. She'd already decided to give the baby up for adoption because she felt she couldn't cope with a baby who was the child of evil criminal Joel Deering (Calum Lill). Because James and his partner Danny were desperate to be parents, it seemed like the perfect solution to let them adopt the little girl who was named Laila. Due to various circumstances, James wasn't able to take Laila straight away, so she was cared for by the Bailey family. Dee-Dee couldn't help but start to grow attached to her daughter although she resisted this. She was therefore heartbroken when James finally took the baby back to America to live with him and Danny. Very soon he was back again, after he and Danny split up. Having nowhere else to go and needing help with Laila, James felt the only option was to return to his family. For Dee-Dee this has meant once again she's having to battle with her feelings as she has more contact with Laila. In upcoming scenes she offers to look after the baby so James can get some rest after a sleepless night. In tender scenes she can't help but smile at her little girl. More Trending Later, she has to take Laila for her vaccinations as James is away. Afterwards she tells Michael (Ryan Russell) that she found the whole experience very emotional. She's arranged to be interviewed by Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) on student radio about her experiences on the maternity ward and the wider issue of the racism that Black women often experience when giving birth. Feeling emotionally fragile, she confides in Daniel (Rob Mallard) that she's not sure she can go through with it. And when she and James argue over Laila, it seems that she's struggling to remain objective about the situation and she's finding it hard to deal with having her daughter close by every day. Gogglebox favourite set to become a millionaire with huge investments

The Channel 4 star, who has been a staple of Gogglebox since 2017, is now able to splash the cash thanks to keeping up his blue collar job while filming the reality show Gogglebox star Pete Sandiford is on track to become a millionaire, thanks to some seriously smart money moves away from the TV screen. The 30-year-old, who's been a fan favourite on the Channel 4 show since 2017 alongside his younger sister Sophie, has been quietly building a small fortune behind the scenes. The siblings are known for having a hilarious back-and-forth, and have become staples of the Channel 4 show. While Pete's telly antics earn him around £1,500 per episode - split with his sister, of course - he has never solely relied on fame to fund his lifestyle. In fact, he still works as a roofer and builder, and often splits his time between filming and being up on rooftops in his hometown of Blackpool. ‌ ‌ Pete co-runs a successful construction business, TJ Joinery & Construction (NW) Ltd, which posted a tidy profit of over £88,000 in its first set of accounts. But that's just the start of his entrepreneurial streak. He has recently launched two companies of his own: Corgi Media Ltd, which handles his earnings from the entertainment world, and Corgi Real Estate – a property investment firm. His first real estate ventures involved purchasing a house in Fleetwood and an apartment in Thornton-Cleveleys, which are reportedly each worth £80,000. Industry insiders say these investments, combined with his building business and TV work, have significantly boosted his net worth - and he is now well on the way to joining the millionaire club. Although his bank balance is growing rapidly, Pete has stayed humble. He told The Sun he still finds it odd to be treated as a celebrity, adding: "I'm just a builder from Blackpool. It's a bit strange when people know who we are. I was on a roof yesterday." Pete and Sophie first appeared on Gogglebox during its tenth season. Off-screen, Pete is married to Paige Yeomans, who he has two young children with. She gave birth to their son Jimmy in late 2021, and they went on to have Evie together in June 2023. ‌ He tends to keep his family life private, and only confirmed his engagement after Sophie let it slip during filming. However, he did open up about a family-related matter on Gogglebox once, admitting his wife was stressing him out during the process of trying to plan Evie's birthday party. Pete told his sister: "Paige has been doing my head in. You know [daughter] Eva's birthday party? Have you rung about the hot pot? Have you rung about the hot pot? I was in a meeting at work the other day and she rung me four times. Guess what about?" With a chuckle, he continued: "Honestly, I said, why are we not just having sandwiches? Do I look like I am Jeff Bezos?" Meanwhile, Sophie previously worked at Debenhams before retraining as a florist. She has now launched her own business called Petali Floristry. She is also in a long-term relationship with boyfriend Ben McKeown.
