Patrick Mahomes' mom pleads for help as family member fights rare cancer

Daily Mail24-07-2025
The family of Patrick Mahomes is asking for prayers and donations as a young relative of the Super Bowl-winning quarterback battles a rare form of cancer.
Luka was 'perfectly healthy' until the day he turned eight months old. But then he inhaled swimming pool water while on vacation and was later rushed to the hospital.
Luka was last month diagnosed with stage L2 intermediate neuroblastoma, a cancer that affects around 800 children in the United States every year.
After a large tumor was found 'pressing' on Luka's lung, he went in for surgery and was in the ICU for five days. He also began chemotherapy and this week, Mahomes' mom Randi made an emotional plea to help Luka, who is the grandson of her cousin.
'Please join me in continuing to pray for my cousin's grandson. Sweet Luka is still fighting Stage L2 intermediate neuroblastoma,' she wrote on Instagram.
'He is undergoing chemo and fighting hard. Please pray for this sweet family as they are going one of the hardest trials of their lives.'
Randi also posted a link to a GoFundMe page to support Luka. At the time of writing, it was already close to its target of $9,000 to help his parents, Cassie and Carlos.
It comes just a few months after Randi, who donated $500 to Luka's fund, lost her father in the wake of this year's Super Bowl.
Randy Mahomes, the grandfather of Chiefs quarterback Patrick, passed away in February after battling an unknown illness.
His death came just five days after Patrick, and Kansas City, lost in the Super Bowl to to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Now the family faces more heartache as Luka continues to battle neuroblastoma. The GoFundMe page, set up late last month, revealed that Luka had 'moved out of intensive care and is on the oncology floor.'
The child's loved ones explained: 'His chest tube still remains in place and is still draining. His next round of chemotherapy will take place on June 25th, and the oncologists are hoping that after the second round, the fluid draining from his lung will subside.
'His parents, Cassie and Carlos, have remained by his side since he was admitted. Since his mother, Cassie, is an ICU nurse, she will be unable to work the duration of his treatment for fears of bringing illness home to her immunocompromised child.

‘We've holidayed with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce – she showed her true colours with us'

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift were joined by two well-known sports broadcasters Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson on a recent holiday, and the pair have revealed what it's like to vacation with them NFL reporters Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson have lifted the lid on their holiday escapades with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. The pop icon and Kansas City Chiefs tight-end, both 35, have dominated headlines ever since they went public with their romance in September 2023. ‌ Despite Swift's presence at the Chiefs' Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in February – where she faced boos from the crowd – and Kelce's surprise appearance on stage during Swift's blockbuster Era's Tour in London, the pair have kept quiet about their high-profile relationship lately. ‌ However, Andrews and Thompson couldn't resist telling all on their podcast 'Calm Down with Erin and Charissa', after Kelce shared snaps on Instagram featuring the two broadcasters with himself and Swift. "I will say this: she's everything that I'd ever hoped and dreamed that she could've been and more," Thompson said about Swift. ‌ "For those of you who have listened to this podcast for the five years that we have had it, you'll know our great affinity for Taylor, pre-Travis. We advocated for her to give him a chance – that clearly worked out! They are so happy and adorable." In a snapshot shared by the three-time Super Bowl champion, Andrews and Thompson were seen enjoying a snowy getaway with their other halves, alongside Kelce and the 'Anti-Hero' hit-maker. Thompson couldn't help but sing praises for the 'Love Story' songstress, reports OK! "That's one of my favourite photos from the trip that we all took together. And I'll echo it! She's [Swift] a 20 out of 20. She is so much fun," Thompson said. Delving into the details of how their group holiday came to be, she said: "When the opportunity came about for all of us to spend time together and go on vacation, we were elated to have time with them. But also, in general, to see what she was all about." One picture posted by Kelce showed him and Swift laughing in the snow, while another showed the couple on an ice rink. Thompson then revealed they were keeping their cards close to the chest on what went down on the trip in a bid to keep a veil of privacy in-place for Swift and Kelce. ‌ "Their lives are so public so it was very important for Erin and I not to say anything," she added. "It's important for us to let them dictate the narrative on things they do in their personal life. "I'm not going to elaborate too much on it other than saying that she is a dream and I adore her and I'm so happy that they make each other happy." ‌ Andrews echoed the sentiment, emphasising their commitment to safeguarding their friends' privacy: "We're so protective of them and their privacy and what they deserve, so that's why we never said anything or planned on saying anything. "We love them, we are happy for them and we are happy to report back that, yes, the long awaited meeting did happen and it exceeded expectations because she is as advertised and a whole lot more." Swift is currently recharging after an astonishing tour that saw the 35-year-old traverse the globe with her three-hour, hit-powered show that ran from March 2023 to December 2024. Kelce, meanwhile, took some time to regroup after his Chiefs team were humiliated in Super Bowl LIX by a Jalen Hurts-inspired Eagles. He initially claimed he would think about his future but later revealed he is to stay on for one more NFL season as tight-end for the Chiefs, with the star previously saying he would play "until the wheels fall off", with the new season getting underway in September.

Grand National winning trainer takes up joint licence with champion jockey's son

Lucinda Russell, who has twice saddled the winner of the Aintree marathon, is formalising an alliance with Michael Scudamore, son of her partner Peter Scudamore Scotland's most successful jumps stable will have an additional name on the front door after Grand National-winning trainer Lucinda Russell announced a new training partnership. ‌ Russell is one of only a handful of active trainers to have won the Grand National twice, taking the prize with One For Arthur in 2017 and Corach Rambler in 2023. She has saddled over 1,000 winners since taking out her licence in 1995, also recording a big win in the 2021 Scottish Grand National with Mighty Thunder and clinched her fourth Cheltenham Festival success with Myretown in the Ultima Handicap Chase in March. ‌ Russell has achieved the top honours in tandem with her partner Peter Scudamore, the eight-time champion jumps jockey, and for the last two seasons Peter's son Michael has worked as assistant trainer. ‌ Michael Scudamore moved to Scotland after training on his own for 16 years during which he won the 2013 Welsh Grand National with Monbeg Dude, co-owned by former England rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall, and enjoyed Cheltenham Festival success with Next Sensation in the 2015 Grand Annual Chase. "The long-term plan has always been for Michael and myself to become joint trainers and it represents an exciting development for the stable as we look forward to the 2025/26 jumps season,' said Russell. ''In his two years as assistant trainer Michael has been able to embed himself into his role within the team and fully acquaint himself with our training methods which utilise the outstanding natural resources of the Perthshire countryside. ''Apart from the names on the licence, nothing will change but the effects of having Michael on board in a leadership role are already evident. ''The size of our stable has increased by 20 per cent since he arrived in Scotland. We have built more stables and will have around 160 horses in training by the time the jumps season fully kicks into gear. ‌ ''Being able to share responsibility for the operational running of the stable has also allowed me to concentrate more time on arguably the most important part of training, sourcing new horses. That has seen the quality of horses we are able to train continue to improve thanks to the support of our owners.'' Michael said: ''I am really excited to be joining Lucinda as joint trainer. The Russell stable has been one of the most successful in the country over the last two years and this move reflects our ambitions to reach even greater heights. ''Any trainer will tell you that when you move into a new stable it takes time to get used to the gallops and the environment around you. ''The last two years have been a great learning experience. I now feel I am fully integrated into a very experienced team in which everyone knows their roles. We have had some great results and everyone is eager to further build on that success.''
