Los Angeles Sparks riding five-game winning streak as 2nd half of season is underway
The team has won five straight games, including three on the road, heading into Tuesday night's matchup with the Las Vegas Aces. It's only the third time in the past five years that the team has won five or more games in a row. The Sparks had a nine-game winning streak in 2020 and a six-game one in 2023.
Los Angeles has scored 90 or more points in all five games for the first time in franchise history and has put up consecutive 100-point efforts — again a first for the team.
'We've been playing better in the last month, part of that is getting bodies back,' Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said. 'We're playing with more pace, so they're figuring it out. We don't play a traditional style, there's a lot of freedom.'
The Sparks have been getting strong contributions from all five of their starters. Kelsey Plum and Dearica Hamby are averaging 20.8 points each. Rickea Jackson and Azura Stevens are right behind at 18.2 points and 17.0, respectively. Jackson torched the Liberty on Saturday for 20 points in the first-half and hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer.
Los Angeles will also welcome back Cameron Brink on Tuesday. She's been sidelined for 13 months with an ACL injury.
Power poll rankings
Minnesota remained the No. 1 team in the poll with Atlanta jumping up to the second spot. New York was third and Phoenix fell to fourth. Seattle was fifth and Indiana sixth, with Las Vegas next. The Sparks moved up two spots to eighth. Washington and Golden State followed Los Angeles. Dallas, Chicago and Connecticut rounded out the poll.
Clark health update
Caitlin Clark is still sidelined with a right groin injury and there's no timetable yet on her return. Indiana's star guard had a second opinion on the injury when the Fever visited New York last week. The team announced there were no signs of additional damage and that maintaining her long-term health was the focus in her recovery.
Player of the week
Kelsey Mitchell of Indiana was the AP player of the week after averaging 28.3 points, four assists and 1.7 steals to help the Fever go 2-1 last week. Other players receiving votes included Napheesa Collier of Minnesota, Kelsey Plum and Dearica Hamby of Los Angeles and Alyssa Thomas of Phoenix.
Game of the week
New York at Minnesota, Wednesday. It's the first meeting of the season between the participants of the WNBA Finals last year. The Liberty won that series in a decisive Game 5 in overtime.

He is hitting .290 with 15 doubles, 17 home runs, 46 RBI and a .884 OPS. Both of those players are expected to join San Diego's everyday lineup, and Preller wasn't done adding with those two. The Padres have struggled mightily with production from catchers this season, so a move was made for former Kansas City Royals catcher Freddy Fermin. Fermin is having a solid season, with a .255 average and .309 on-base percentage. By no means are those All-Star caliber numbers, but they are much better than the production provided by Martin Maldanado and Elias Diaz. In total, the acquisitions of Miller, Sears, O'Hearn, Laureano and Fermin gave the Padres the best haul of any team at the trade deadline. The Yankees are only willing to trade their mashing prospect for Pirates ace — and arguably the industry's most desirable pitching trade asset — Paul Skenes, and would not include Jones in trade talks with the Marlins for former NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara, according to The Post's Jon Heyman. In part due to their reluctance to use Jones in talks, the Yankees did not land a starting pitcher at the deadline. It also opens the Yankees to immense scrutiny should Jones not become a star player. To say that the only person you would trade a prospect for is Skenes, the dominant second-year righty sporting a 1.89 career ERA, seemingly indicates you believe this player will be a perennial All-Star. 4 Paul Skenes is a certified stud. The Yankees clearly think they have a budding superstar on their hands. 4 The Yankees didn't include Jones in talks for Sandy Alcantara. AP The rest of the industry, though, is not universal in that opinion. Jones is only the Yankees' fourth-ranked prospect according to and not even among the sport's top-100 prospects. Heyman also reported that the Yankees would not trade their No. 1 prospect, shortstop George Lombard Jr., for Alcantara. The difference in opinion stems from whether teams and evaluators believe Jones can be a prolific masher despite a high strikeout rate or if his swing-and-miss tendency will doom him. Former Yankees bust Joey Gallo provides a solid example of how that that line can be. Gallo led the league with 213 strikeouts in 2021, but teams will take that when you hit 38 homers and 77 RBIs with an .808 OPS. The 2022 Yankees version that hit .159 with a .621 OPS while striking out 106 times in 273 plate appearances with 12 homers and 24 RBIs is why he got sent out of town. 4 Spencer Jones is on the verge of a call-up. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Jones has fanned 96 times spanning 262 at-bats this year (36.6 percent), but his 29 homers and 1.115 OPS negate those whiffs. He's been particularly dominant in Triple-A, hitting .402 with 13 homers and a 1.381 OPS spanning 87 at-bats in 21 games. For his minor league career, Jones has struck out in 35.8 percent of his at-bats. Jones remains in Triple-A for the time being, even with Aaron Judge sidelined, and these comments only magnify how the Yankees employ him in the future. He could be an everyday fielder as soon as next year or perhaps he could be headlining a deal for Skenes, should the Pirates decide to make him available.
