Disney+ adds iconic 'wickedly funny' noughties cult classic that fans still can't get enough of

Daily Mirror04-05-2025
Disney+ subscribers should be running not walking to their TVs this Bank Holiday weekend as a fan-favourite teen comedy has dropped.
Disney+ has just added a cult classic to its extensive library, which has already made its way into its top 10 most streamed films.
Mean Girls is a modern-day teen classic, and now millennials can relive the magic over and over again as the Lindsay Lohan film was released on Disney+ this week.

Created by 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live legend Tina Fey, Mean Girls originally hit the big screen back in 2004, with The Parent Trap's childhood star Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron.

After leaving her childhood behind in Africa, Cady joins a 'normal' school in Illinois where her two new friends give her the inside scoop on everyone's social status.
Her path then crosses with the infamous Plastics: 'Fetch' creator Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), aspiring 'weather girl' Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried) and their leader, the terrifying Regina George (Rachel McAdams).
Cady initially doesn't see what the issue is with the Plastics until she becomes smitten with Regina's ex-boyfriend, Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett).
Besides its star-studded cast, which also features Fey herself as Ms Norbury, Parks and Recreation actress Amy Poehler and Scrubs' Neil Flynn, Mean Girls is a classic thanks to its stream of memorable one-liners.

Some of the classics that continue to be used in Reels today include 'On Wednesdays we wear pink', 'That is so fetch', 'Is Butter a carb?' and 'I'm sick', followed by Karen's pathetic cough and Regina's response: 'Boo you w***e'.
Mean Girls may not have the best Rotten Tomatoes rating with 84% but fans cannot help but express their love for the film, with it being labelled as 'wickedly funny'.
Another remarked: 'Undoubtedly the best teen comedy ever adapted from a sociological study…'

A third agreed: 'Mean Girls is a hysterical comedy about high school cliques, and may be the best teen satire since Heathers', while another describes it as 'comic gold'.
More than 20 years have passed since Mean Girls was first released but has been given a new lease of life with the 2024 remake starring Angourie Rice and Renee Rapp as Cady and Regina, respectively.
This version differs though, as it's actually a musical and has since been made into a West End and Broadway musical.

We're staying at EVERY Disney hotel in the world... We'll be visiting 45 resorts and five countries in 52 days

A couple who are planning to stay at every Disney hotel on the globe have laid bare their plans to visit 45 resorts in five different countries in just 52 days. James Doherty, 31, and Chloe Doherty, 28, based in the UK, have been avid Disney fans for years. They take their daughter, Athena, three, to a Disney theme park 'two or three times a year, sometimes even more.' Now, they have set out on a quest to stay at every single Disney property in one massive trip, something that's never been done before. The pair, who started the endeavor this weekend, said it will take them roughly two months to complete, and will total more than 50 hours of flying. 'We usually visit Disney around two or three times a year - sometimes even more,' Chloe explained during an exclusive chat with the Daily Mail. 'We've been to Disneyland Paris, Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort in California, Tokyo Disney, and enjoyed a few Disney cruises as well.' She explained that they always dreamed of doing a trip like this but 'never quite had the opportunity' to do it. But after 'dealing with some health challenges' earlier this year, they figured it was finally time to make their dream a reality. 'We'd talked about it so many times but never committed - then, after dealing with some health challenges, we woke up one morning and thought, "Life's too short. Why not? Let's do it!' And that's when we started looking into it,' she recalled. They've been planning since April, and mapping out the perfect route to hit all the resorts was not easy. But now, they've got it all figured out; the endeavor will start at Disneyland Paris, where they'll stay for seven days. They'll then head to Hong Kong Disney, followed by Shanghai Disney, and then Tokyo Disney. After that, they'll spend some time at Disney's resort in Hawaii, before they head to Disneyland in California. Next comes Disney's hotel in Hilton head, South Carolina, and its Vero Beach, Florida, resort, before the family will end with Walt Disney world in mid-October. 'We will be staying at 45 official resorts in total,' shared Chloe. 'Seven in Disneyland Paris, three in Hong Kong, two in Shanghai, six in Tokyo, three in California, 21 in Orlando, one in Hawaii, one in Florida coast, and one in Hilton Head.' When asked about how much they have spent on the trip, Chloe stayed tight-lipped, stating, 'We won't be discussing cost at the moment.' Chloe noted that she's aware that it's a lot of time at Disney parks in a row, but said she's not worried that their three-year-old daughter will get sick of going to the Happiest Place on Earth. 'She's been going to Disney parks since she was a baby and, honestly, she probably loves them even more than we do,' gushed the mother-of-one. 'For her, every visit is exciting and new, so I think she'll be just as enthusiastic on the last day as she is on the first.' In response to anyone who may judge them for the extravagant endeavor, she said, 'We know it's a big, ambitious trip, but for us it's about doing something we love as a family. 'Everyone has their own passions - ours just happens to involve Disney and travel. 'We're making memories together, and at the end of the day, that's what really matters to us.' They plan to document the entire thing on their YouTube channel, called Doherty's In The Magic. 'We love Disney, we love travelling as a family, and this combines both in the most magical way,' she concluded.

Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis' Freakier Friday hits HUGE milestone at the box office in opening weekend

Disney's Freakier Friday achieved a major box office milestone, earning back its production budget in just three days, despite opening at No. 2 in the United States. The sequel, which reunites Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan more than 20 years after Freaky Friday (2003), debuted to an estimated $29 million domestically over the August 8 weekend. The film was narrowly edged out of the top spot by Zach Cregger's horror thriller Weapons, which took in $42 million in North America. Strong international turnout boosted Freakier Friday's global total to $45 million, including $16 million from overseas markets, according to Deadline. That matches the film's reported $45 million production budget, making it the 41st release of 2025 to cross that mark worldwide. While recouping costs so quickly is a positive sign, industry analysts note that films typically need to gross around 2.5 times their production budgets to turn a profit, putting the sequel's estimated break-even point at roughly $105 million. The original Freaky Friday opened to $22.2 million domestically before reaching $160.8 million globally. If the new installment follows a similar trajectory, it could top $200 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run, which would increase the likelihood of a third film. In 2003, Jamie Lee and Lohan starred in the smash hit comedy, Freaky Friday, which sees the two characters switch bodies. Fans had long hoped for a sequel to the iconic comedy but had to wait two decades after the original first hit theaters. Jamie Lee recently revealed why there was such a long gap between the two releases as she admitted she has long had her eye on a follow-up movie. 'The truth is that Lindsay had to be old enough to have a 15-year-old daughter, people would ask me about the movie over and over again,' she shared on The One Show. 'And finally someone in Australia said, ''well she is'' and I was like ''what do you mean?'' because I know her as this young girl so I don't know how old she is. 'So someone told me and I was, like ''Oh! well maybe we can make the movie. Let's go!''' Lindsay was just 15 years old when she first portrayed Anna Coleman in Freaky Friday alongside Jamie Lee, who played her on-screen mother Tess Coleman. It follows the bickering mother and daughter after a Chinese restaurant fortune cookie mishap causes them to switch bodies, forcing them to live the other's life. Despite barely having been able to see eye-to-eye, the magical switch eventually allows them to see things from the other's point of view. The sequel will see the iconic pairing switch places once again, though this time there is quadruple chaos in store. Anna (Lindsay) is preparing to tie the knot with to Eric Davies (Manny Jacinto), but things are proving difficult as her teenage daughter Harper (Julia Butters) despises Eric's teenager Lily (Sophia Hammons). Harper highlights her disgust as she's heard reciting mock wedding vows, in which she brands her soon-to-be step-sister 'a little demon thing with an obnoxious accent.' A flash forward to Anna's bachelorette party sees her and mother Tess Coleman sit down with a fortune teller (Vanessa Bayer), who warns them they may learn another lesson by 'walking in each other's paths'. Anna and Tess then find themselves caught up in yet another 'freaky' body swap incident - only this time, it's not just between the two of them. The next morning, Anna discovers she's swapped bodies with daughter Harper, while Tess, aka 'Grandma', is now in the body of Anna's step-daughter Lily. Quadruple chaos then ensues as the foursome try to navigate their new roles with just days to go until the wedding. Chad Michael Murray is also returning to his role as Jake as the two teenage girls also hatch a plot to try and get Anna to reunite with her first love amid the wedding chaos. Meanwhile, New Line/Warner Bros' Weapons dominated the global market, earning $27.5 million from 72 international territories for a $70 million worldwide debut. Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps fell about 60 percent in its second weekend to $15.5 million domestically. The superhero film now stands at $240.3 million in North America and $434.2 million worldwide. Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Bad Guys 2 dropped 53% in its sophomore frame to $10.4 million, bringing its 10-day domestic total to $43.4 million. Paramount's Naked Gun held steady with a 50% decline, earning $8.4 million in its second weekend for a domestic total of $33 million. The R-rated comedy has been one of the year's rare bright spots for the genre after opening to nearly $17 million.

Tim Rice: I would ‘consider' using AI to help write songs

Lyricist Sir Tim Rice has said he would 'consider' using artificial intelligence (AI) to help write songs. The award-winning songwriter, 80, is best known for writing the hit musicals Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber, now Baron Lloyd-Webber. Advertisement Speaking to Jane Mulkerrins on Times Radio, Sir Tim said he has not yet used AI to help write music but is not opposed to it. Sir Tim said: 'I'd certainly consider it. I hadn't ever used it. Perhaps I should. Sir Tim Rice attending Disney's The Lion King European Premiere held in Leicester Square, London (Ian West/PA) 'I was doing a cricket speech at lords, and AI had only just come to the attention of the public, and I asked it to write a quick Shakespeare sonnet on cricket, which was really quite good. 'So, perhaps I should try it for one or two songs. I've never used it seriously.' Advertisement When asked whether he had concerns around the use of AI in the arts, he said: 'If I'm honest, no, I'm not sure. 'Nobody quite knows what it will do. I mean, it might create more jobs. Don't ask me how, but these things could happen. It's a bit like saying in 1979, do you think the mobile phone will cause a lot of hassle? And it's got great benefits but also great disadvantages and I wouldn't begin to know that. Rachel Zegler plays Eva Peron in Jamie Lloyd's new production of Evita at the London Palladium (Jordan Pettitt/PA) 'The other thing is, I'm getting on a bit, and I'm not going to (be here) in 20 years' time. I'm not gonna be too worried about AI unless they can bring me back to life.' The lyricist also praised actress Rachel Zegler for her performance of Eva Peron in the West End production of Evita, a musical which follows the story of Peron as she rises from poverty to become the most powerful woman in Latin America. Advertisement The 24-year-old has made headlines this summer for singing the musical's most popular number, Don't Cry For Me Argentina, from a balcony outside the London Palladium theatre. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, the artistic choice means passers-by are able to be part of the production and witness the live rendition while ticketed audience members watch the number from a screen inside the theatre. Sir Tim said: 'The cast are excellent. Rachel Zegler is a force of nature, I believe is the cliche best applied. 'She sings it beautifully and the idea of having her going out onto the balcony, into the real street, is a work of genius, and also great work of PR and I enjoyed it.' Advertisement
