Cowboys Headlines: Who is best-value draft pick? UDFA pay set, Texans eye HQ like The Star
Those high-profile first-round draft picks are supposed to be stars, and even Round 2 prospects are considered locks to contribute. But how a team does in Rounds 3 and beyond often tells the real story. Who did the Cowboys find in those later rounds of the draft who will exceed expectations? It depends on who you ask. To kick off this recap of the day's headlines, we'll look at three different prospects who could easily be in the mix to one day be called the club's best-value draft pick for 2025.
Meanwhile, the UDFA paysheet has been released, and the disparity among some of the post-draft signees may come as a surprise. Also, we'll dive in to the Cowboys' DB situation and ask if they really got better, we'll ID a few underrated gems on the roster, and we'll tell you which two Pro Bowl defenders one Dallas rookie is trying to emulate. We'll take a do-over on one notorious draft-day bust, we'll tell you which AFC team is eyeing their own version of The Star, we'll catch up with Dak Prescott lobbing balls in an unexpected venue, and we'll tell you which rival city you'll have to invade to attend the 2027 NFL draft.

Shavon Revel, Jr. is the easy pick here for Dallas. He has first-round talent when healthy and many experts thought he'd get taken in the second round, so the Cowboys landing him in the third is highway robbery. Assuming his recovery from a torn ACL and partial meniscus tear stays on track, Revel could be ready for Week 1 and even compete for a starting job.

Jaydon Blue, the Texas prospect who was picked by Dallas at No. 149 overall, is actually a potential midseason starter and could even be a long-term answer for the club at running back. He's expected to begin the season behind Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams, but the home-run hitter (who's also a legitimate receiving threat) could prove to simply be too talented to stay on the sideline.

Revel in the third round and Blue in the fifth could pay off handsomely for Dallas, but don't overlook Phil Mafah, the Clemson running back taken in the seventh round. When healthy, he's a hammer between the tackles, which provides a different skill set than anything the Cowboys' three other backs can claim. A shoulder injury might have contributed to lackluster draft stock, but the 239th overall pick could be one-half of a one-two punch out of the Cowboys backfield by the end of the season.

The seventh-round pick out of UCLA has given himself a lot to live up to, based on who he says he tries to model his own game after. "Vita Vea and Dexter Lawrence, for sure," he said. "I would say they're similar, but different. I feel like Vita just causes havoc throughout the whole game, but I feel like Dexter Lawrence has a little finesse in his game." The Cowboys hope that by putting Toia under alongside Osa Odighizuwa and Solomon Thomas, and the tutelage of heralded defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton, Toia will become his own kind of wrecking ball in Dallas.
A Step Behind? Have the Cowboys upgraded their defensive back room from 2024? :: Cowboys Wire

The loss of Jourdan Lewis is big, no doubt. So is the injury status of Trevon Diggs. Kaiir Elam and Shavon Revel, Jr. have been added, but both newcomers are outside cornerbacks, as is DaRon Bland. So there is a real question in how the Cowboys will cover the slot. The safety room didn't change much; the veteran starters have gotten a year older, and the younger guys have gotten a year wiser. In all, there are too many contingencies to just automatically consider this unit better than last season's.
Grading every NFL team's 2025 draft class: Where does the Cowboys' haul fit? :: Cowboys Wire

A full week after the fact, the Cowboys' draft class still looks like a good one, earning an A- grade in this roundup from the NFL Wire editors. After two down drafts where they attempted to cater to needs, they took the opposite approach this year and didn't use that to dictate their approach.

Defensive back Alijah Clark tops the list with a $25,000 bonus and a guaranteed $234,000. Linebacker Justin Barron has a slightly lower bonus but the same guarantee, which equals a season of practice squad pay. At the other end of the spectrum, wide receiver Traeshon Holden, surprisingly, got just a $3,000 bonus and zero guaranteed money.

Jalen Tolbert may actually be much better than the fanbase is giving him credit for. Don't be surprised if he becomes that precious No. 2 receiver in 2025… because he was already that to a point in 2024. Edge rusher Dante Fowler, Jr. could play a much more important role in the DE rotation if Matt Eberflus can play to the veteran's strengths. And Shavon Revel, Jr. could prove to be as adept in coverage as any cornerback prospect in this draft class.

In PFF's re-do of the 2006 draft, the Cowboys get to take back the somewhat infamous Bobby Carpenter pick at No. 18 overall. The Ohio State linebacker would go on to start just 10 games over seven seasons and remains a rare Cowboys bust. In this hindsight exercise, the Cowboys could have checked the same box much more successfully with Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who in reality was drafted with selection No. 33. He won Defensive Rookie of the Year and was a two-time Pro Bowler, starting 139 of 140 career games.
Houston Texans hope to build new team headquarters that could include an entertainment district :: Houston Chronicle

The Texans could be the next NFL franchise looking to replicate what the Cowboys have created with The Star in Frisco. Several parties in the greater Houston area are interested in partnering with the team on a new headquarters and practice facility, which could include an entertainment/shopping/dining district. The Texans are currently one of four NFL clubs who base their day-to-day operations out of the stadium where they also play home games.
Cowboys rival, Washington Commanders will host 2027 NFL draft :: Cowboys Wire

After a monster multi-day event in Green Bay, the NFL is taking the draft to the nation's capital. It's been announced that the 2027 draft will be held on the Washington Mall, with an attendance that could easily dwarf most presidential inaugurations.

Dallas Wings Coach Issues Concerning Statement Amid Paige Bueckers' Injury Absence

Dallas Wings Coach Issues Concerning Statement Amid Paige Bueckers' Injury Absence originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Wings are in action on Tuesday when they take on the Seattle Storm in a road matchup. Advertisement The Wings are looking to avoid their third straight loss and their seventh defeat in eight games played so far this season, but they will need to try to do so without Paige Bueckers in the mix. The highly touted rookie is set to miss her second straight contest on Tuesday after being placed under the league's concussion protocol. Bueckers suffered a head injury, which forced her to sit out Dallas' 94-83 loss to Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on Saturday. Wings head coach Chris Kolcanes spoke to reporters ahead of Tuesday's matchup, and the Dallas shot-caller had a concerning statement about the team's backcourt situation. According to Kolcanes, "there really is no point guard active right now" for the squad. Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers celebrates during a game.© Jordan Godfree-Imagn Images ' JJ [Quinerly] off the bench is really our only true point guard," he said, via Wings beat reporter Myah Taylor. "… She really hasn't been a point guard since high school,' Koclanes said. Advertisement It is also worth noting that Quinerly, the Wings' second-round pick from the 2025 WNBA Draft, has averaged just 5.0 minutes off the bench in five appearances this season. Apart from Bueckers, the Wings are also missing the services of veteran guard Tyasha Harris, who is sitting out her third straight game on Tuesday due to a lingering left knee injury. The silver lining for Dallas is that Bueckers is set to be reevaluated after Tuesday's game. The Wings are hoping to clear her from the concussion protocol for her potential return to the court on Friday against the Los Angeles Sparks. 3 former Cowboys with troubled pasts arrested within 72 hours of each other

3 former Cowboys with troubled pasts arrested within 72 hours of each other The Dallas Cowboys have never been strangers with the red flag industry. Ever since their dominance of the 1990s, they've served as the poster franchise for taking risks on players with questionable pasts. Some times it works out, other times it doesn't, but since Jerry Jones has been owner of the club, they're well known to give second and third chances. Three of the most recent second-chance players all found themselves in booking photos over a 72-hour period. On Thursday, it was reported that Greg Hardy, signed in 2015 after a domestic violence arrest, had been arrested on Wednesday afternoon or alleging assaulting a family member. In the early hours of Saturday, Adam "Pacman" Jones was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication. Also in the early hours of Saturday, recent second-round pick Kelvin Joseph was arrested after being involved in a fatal car crash. While some have tried to paint the NFL in a bad light when it comes to arrests, the reality is they have a lower arrest rate (2.5 k per 100,000) than the general public (4k per 100,000) does. It's only that every arrest of an NFL player makes headlines. And while it may seem like the Cowboys have a greater share of NFL arrests than other clubs, that's more than likely because their reputation precedes them. Hardy, most famously, signed a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the Cowboys after his 2014 arrest led to his release from the Carolina Panthers. He did not get along well, consistently missing meetings and clashing with the coaching staff and fellow players. No team signed him after that and he eventually turned to being an MMA fighter to try and capitalize on his athletic nature. His career lasted from 2018 through 2022, when after losing three straight matches was released from the UFC. Jones signed with Dallas in 2008, after being suspended by the league for 2007 after two seasons in Tennessee. He played just nine games before being suspended, as he was involved in a fight with the bodyguard Dallas assigned to babysit the player. After sitting out 2009, he rejuvenated his career in Cincinnati, playing eight seasons for the Bengals, earning First-Team All-Pro honors in 2015 and a Pro Bowl the following year. Jones, 41, was booked just before 2 a.m. Saturday into Kenton County jail, according to the court log. He was arrested by the Covington Police Department and charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, disorderly conduct, and assault of a police officer or a probation officer. Jones posted a $10,000 bond and was released around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Other details regarding the arrest were not immediately made available. Saturday's arrest in Covington, which is directly across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, marks at least the fourth time since 2021 that Jones has been arrested. He has now been booked on a public intoxication charge three years in a row. Joseph, part of the Cowboys' 2021 class that brought them Micah Parsons and Osa Odighizuwa, was traded away before 2023. he had been arrested for his participation in a fight outside a bar that led to a murder. He was drafted following being removed from the LSU team and having to transfer to Kentucky a year before entering the draft.

Ravens DC Zach Orr offers A1 critique of their new safety tandem

Ravens DC Zach Orr offers A1 critique of their new safety tandem Zach Orr sees something special brewing in the Ravens starting safety tandem. Pay close attention to the backend of the Baltimore Ravens' defense as mandatory minicamp and training camp ensue. How's that for stating the obvious, right? Several OTA practices have already given us so much to talk about. Rashod Bateman is set to enter another tax bracket after signing an extension. Ar'Darius Washington is in a contract season, but he is unfortunately injured. That has seemingly opened the door for the nearly-forgotten Jalyn Armour-Davis, who has since gotten some snaps and worked at the safety position. For the Ravens to take another step in the right direction and get back to the AFC Championship Game, the backend of their defense will need to take a few steps of their own. We know there isn't much to worry about with Marlon Humphrey and Kyle Hamilton. The latter has missed a few OTA sessions, but there's a lot of optimism in the tandem he will form with a newly-acquired and highly-touted rookie. Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr has a ton of faith in his starting safety duo. The first three seasons of Kyle Hamilton's career were good enough to inspire the potential envy of NFL stars who are five years his senior. He earned a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association's All-Rookie Team in 2022. He has only gotten better since then. A member of the past two Pro Bowl rosters, he earned a First-Team All-Pro nod in 2023 before being named a Second-Teamer in 2024. One star alone, however, does not an elite safety tandem make, so Baltimore found an answer and an upgrade during the first round of this past April's draft in Malaki Starks. Saying defense coordinator Zach Orr is excited would be a massive understatement. This past week, he expressed his expectation for Hamilton and Starks as a duo. The NFL is a long way from college football in terms of level of competition, but Starks looks like a sure thing. Baltimore is hoping his skill set translates to the highest level of football. During his time in Athens with the Georgia Bulldogs, he was named a Freshman All-American and became a College Football Playoff National Champion. He was a Consensus All-American in 2023, a First-team All-American in 2024, and has two First-Team All-SEC (2023, 2024) to show for his trouble. He's used to playing in big games. He's certain to play in several this season, and fortunately for him, though the pressure to perform will come quickly, he doesn't have to do everything on his own.
