Natalie Portman told Jenna Ortega during a discussion for Interview magazine that she endured a 'long Lolita phase' as a child actor, referring to how the industry sexualized her at a young age. She was just 12 years old when she filmed her breakthrough role in 'Leon: The Professional.' The 'Black Swan' Oscar winner has long been outspoken about Hollywood's sexualization of child stars.
'I think there's a public understanding of me that's different from who I am,' Portman told Ortega, with whom she starts with in the upcoming movie 'The Gallerist.' 'I've talked about it a little before — about how, as a kid, I was really sexualized, which I think happens to a lot of young girls who are onscreen. I felt very scared by it. Obviously sexuality is a huge part of being a kid, but I wanted it to be inside of me, not directed towards me.'

Portman said she's spent her entire career being put into the 'tropes' the industry likes to assign female actors, adding: 'I think at each phase in my career, there was a different one that I was like, 'Oh, I've got to avoid this.' Obviously there was a long Lolita phase. Then there was the long 'chick who helps the guy realize his emotional thing' phase for about a decade.'
Portman revealed on an episode of the 'Smartless' podcast last year that she learned at a young age to project a tough exterior on film sets to avoid sexualization by potential predators in the industry.
'That kind of projection of seriousness protected me in a way,' she said. ''Cause I feel like it was almost a warning signal like, 'Oh, don't do shit to her.' Not that anyone ever, you know, deserves it or is asking for it. But I felt like that was my unconscious way of doing it.'
Portman added that her mom 'was with me all the time and made sure that no one got near me' while working as a child actor. Then, 'When I went to college, my dad was like, 'Okay, that was cute. Time to move on. Let's find another job — a real job.' ' She studied psychology at Harvard University but never left acting fully behind.
Next up for Portman is a starring role opposite John Krasinski in Guy Ritchie's Apple TV+ adventure movie 'Fountain of Youth,' streaming May 23.

Spike Lee says ESPN won't air his Colin Kaepernick series

ESPN has confirmed it will not move forward with a highly anticipated docuseries about Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who ignited a national movement in 2016 by kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality. The eight-part series, directed by Oscar-winner Spike Lee, was announced in 2022 and promoted as a first-person account of Kaepernick's journey from NFL star to civil rights figure. But on Saturday, Aug. 16, both ESPN and Lee said the project had been canceled due to 'creative differences.' 'ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences,' the network said in a statement. 'Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film.' Lee revealed the news the night before, on Friday, Aug. 15, while attending a fundraiser in Beverly Hills. 'It's not coming out. That's all I can say,' he told Reuters, citing a nondisclosure agreement that barred him from elaborating. The project had already encountered setbacks. In 2023, Puck News reported that Lee and Kaepernick had disagreed over the film's direction, delaying production. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro was reportedly open to allowing the filmmakers to shop the series elsewhere. Kaepernick, now 37, has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season. The 49ers released him in 2017, citing football-related reasons, though many believe his political activism significantly influenced the league's decision to keep him unsigned. 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now!' Trump told a crowd at a rally. 'Out! He's fired!' Kaepernick later filed a collusion grievance against the NFL, which was settled in 2019.

‘Brutal' Meghan Accused of ‘Vicious, Nasty Move' Toward Kate as Harry & William's Relationship Takes an Unexpected Turn

People have always been interested in the relationship between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. This preceded the feud between Prince William and Prince Harry, but in the past few years, as the relationship between the brothers deteriorated, people have been even more invested in how the two wives get along, if they get along at all. And now some are taking a business decision on the part of Markle as an attack on Middleton. talked to royal expert Hugo Vickers, who criticized the fact that Markle will release a holiday special this December on Netflix, something that is said to clash with Kate Middleton's annual Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey. More from StyleCaster Kate Delivers Emotional Statement With William a Day After Their Serious Health Alert Serious Health Alert Issued Weeks After Kate Revealed She Still Can't 'Function Normally' Post-Cancer Related: Did William really cheat on Kate? 'It's always said that whenever Catherine, the Princess of Wales, starts something, Meghan Markle does something else to cap it, or in some ways clash with it,' Vickers said. Another source told the outlet, 'This is just the type of vicious, nasty move that is coming to define Meghan.' Vickers referred to the move as 'brutal,' adding. 'Obviously, the initiative of the Princess of Wales at Westminster Abbey is incredibly moving and incredibly special, and is done for the benefit of the rest of the world, for all the people who've been suffering, all the people who've helped with charities, all that sort of thing, so it's all for the public good,' he said, claiming Markle's holiday special isn't anywhere near the same. This all comes after recent reports regarding the brothers have been contradictory, to say the least. The Daily Beast reported that, according to a friend of William, 'He absolutely f—ing hates' Harry. That same source added, 'William will never, ever forgive Harry for what he has done. Charles is the king; he can do what he likes. But make no mistake: William believes with every fiber of his being that giving Harry and Meghan back any royal imprimatur is a huge mistake.' Recent reports also indicated William and Kate's friends refer to Markle's brand, As Ever, by a shady nickname, 'As If,' though there was no clarification about whether Prince William and Kate Middleton also used the nickname. Similarly, Kate Middleton's longtime right-hand woman, Natasha Archer, unfollowed Meghan Markle and her company after departing Kensington Palace, which was seen as a sign that the relationship between the two women isn't great. But there's also reportedly one thing that could bring the brothers closer together: the fact that their father, King Charles, is reportedly not doing well. A source told Parade that 'King Charles really isn't doing well,' adding that his health has been 'deteriorating more.' And that might just be the thing that pushes the brothers to finally put everything else aside and reconcile. 'It wouldn't be surprising if William and Harry reconnected a bit more over this,' the source added. 'This could be the thing that pushes it to happen.' So, while it seems the relationship between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle is strained at the moment, if their husbands reconcile, the two will probably be in each other's orbit again and that means they will likely make a point of, if not being friends, at least getting along.
