Long Island schools score $270M state-aid boost— but homeowners still drowning in some of highest property taxes in US
Albany's new budget allocates a record $37 billion in school funding statewide.
The pact also tacks on free school breakfast and lunch for all students regardless of income and implements a statewide classroom smartphone ban starting this fall.

'This represents one of the largest statewide school aid increases since the Foundation Aid formula was established in 2007,' the New York School Board Association said in a statement, referring to the state's attempt to more equitably distribute money to needy districts.
Nassau schools will be divvying up an extra $123 million — a 6% jump for the county — bringing the total amount of state funds to nearly $2.15 billion for next year.

Suffolk will see a roughly similar 5% increase with an extra nearly $150 million to bring their total state aid to more than $3 billion.
The vast majority of Long Island school districts — 108 out of 124 — are in line for a boost in state aid under Albany's new budget.
While most of their increases are going to be relatively small, a handful of districts will see major gains, including Elmont and Deer Park with 13% jumps, as well as Hempstead and Middle Country at nearly 11% rises.
But because the budget was more than 30 days late in being passed, combined with state laws requiring districts to complete their budget proposals for next year by April 25, Long Island homeowners will not see a decrease in their property taxes, which rank among the highest in the nation, at least this year.

Property taxes in both counties have ballooned in the past decade despite state aid now covering a much larger share of Long Island's school funding than it did a decade ago, rising roughly $2.5 billion from about 21% in 2015-16 to nearly 32% this school year, according to Newsday.
Gov. Kathy Hochul told homeowners in Long Island last week that relief was coming and was included in the budget — promising that roughly 80% of New Yorkers will see their taxes go down while also receiving inflation checks and tax credits for children.
'Your family is my fight,' Hochul told reporters outside of a Copiague home.

Mamdani is far, far more progressive than most Muslims in the city. But Sliwa believes many conservative Muslims are turned off by cultural attacks from some politicians on the right, like Marjorie Taylor Greene. Last month, the representative from Georgia shared a meme of the Statue of Liberty covered in a burka. Con-man Cuomo pretends Trump will come to his rescue
Boy, does Andrew Cuomo think his donors are suckers: Over the weekend, he reportedly told a well-heeled Southampton crowd that no less than President Donald Trump is going to provide him the votes to become New York's next mayor. How? By ordering New York City Republican voters — who always do what they're told, right? — to forget about GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa and sitting Mayor Eric Adams and vote instead for the 'Luv Guv' to save us all from Zohran the socialist. We find it hard to believe Trump would back Cuomo and even if he did, the president will find it a hard sell to convince New Yorkers to back the guy who signed bail reform and Raise the Age into law, as well as those infernal 'congestion' tolls. Not to mention his nursing-home death toll, his fracking ban and other crazy, costly 'climate' policies, nor an ethical swamp of self-dealing that was his decade as gov, capped by his $5 million deal to 'write' (that is, illegally have his staff produce) a book about his pandemic 'leadership.' And Trump certainly knows better than to try to make city Republicans swallow all that. Perhaps Cuomo has deluded himself into thinking otherwise; more likely he's just playing the rich crowd for chumps, figuring they have no clue how street-level GOPers (or Trump!) see anything. The ex-gov probably also thinks he earned that Emmy (since taken away) that Trump-haters handed him for his COVID press conferences. What chutzpah, by the way: Just weeks ago, Cuomo was bragging about how as mayor he'd practically move to DC to fight Trump; suddenly the prez is supposed to trust this snake? Abandoning any semblance of principle to cozy up to rich donors may have helped Cuomo win past elections, but the voters do learn from experience — and the experience of being governed by cynics like Cuomo is exactly why so many Democrats opted for Mamdani in the primary. And why few Republicans will back the ex-gov in November, no matter how they loathe Mamdani's vision. Nobody, neither fat cat nor small donor, should waste a dime on this loser.

Pro-Adams PAC phones NYC voters to call Cuomo a 'sore loser'
A Super PAC backing the re-election of Mayor Eric Adams is phoning tens of thousands of voters to tell them rival ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo is a 'sore loser' and that only Hizzoner can beat socialist Zohran Mamdani. 'Andrew Cuomo is not only a loser — he is a sore loser — which is worse, and nobody likes a sore loser, the public-safety advocacy group Protect the Protectors says in its calls to 75,000 Big Apple voters. 'He lost badly to the dangerous Mamdani in the primary, and Mamdani knows how to and will beat him again,' says the Super PAC, launched by veteran campaign strategist Hank Sheinkopf. But the ex-gov has refused to bow out of the general election Nov. 4 despite getting slammed by Mamdani, opting to now run as an independent alongside Adams. 3 The organization has called out ex-Gov. The Super PAC says Adams — whose popularity has plummeted amid corruption probes — will win with a 'comeback campaign, which New Yorkers love, and beat the dangerous Mamdani which Cuomo the sore loser can never do.' The live calls are being made to voters in state Assembly districts where Cuomo fared well in the Democratic primary, though he lost overall to Mamdani. Advertisement In a separate script, Protect the Protectors seeks to soften up Republicans to back Adams instead of Sliwa, too. The group praises Sliwa, the Guardian Angels founder and GOP mayoral nominee, as a 'great New Yorker' who cares about the city. But it says President Trump, the titular head of the Republican Party, 'doesn't want an empty moral victory' with Sliwa, whose votes will only fracture the anti-Mamdani crowd and assure the socialist becomes mayor. 3 The group's campaign strategist, Hank Sheinkop, mentioned that Cuomo losing to Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary shows that he is very beatable. 'The president knows that he and the mayor don't always agree. He also knows Mayor Adams will do the right thing for New York and will be responsible to work with.' 'Cuomo is a loser who Mamdani already beat badly. Please remember the president grew up here and loves New York, and when Mayor Adams wins, we all know the president would want to do great things for New York!' Sheinkopf told The Post said Cuomo can't sell himself as the law-and-order alternative to Mamdani because he approved the state's unpopular cashless bail law as governor while his appointees on the parole board have let loose convicted cop-killers. Advertisement A third series of phone calls will be made by an issue-oriented affiliated group that stops short of saying who to vote or against. The first run of live calls will cost about $75,000 and could double to $150,000 as more donations come in, Sheinkopf said. The Cuomo campaign dismissed Adams as the real loser saying his voter support is in the single digits in the latest poll. 'Is anyone really surprised that the mayor, who is polling in the single digits, and his band of unindicted co-conspirators are playing gutter politics?' said Cuomo campaign spokesman Richard Azzopardi. Advertisement A Gotham poll released Tuesday found Mamdani the mayoral frontrunner with 41.8% support from voters for the Nov. 4 general election, followed by Cuomo with 23.4%, Sliwa 16.5% and Adams 8.8%. In a statement, the Sliwa campaign said, 'Eric Adams' campaign is a mess. 'Just look at the latest polls — Curtis Sliwa is trouncing him. Desperate candidates do desperate things. Sheinkopf, who has close ties to law-enforcement unions, said his ultimate goal is to make 2 million pro-Adams calls and knock on 2 million household doors by Election Day, which would require millions of dollars in donations. He briefly worked for a pro-Cuomo group during the Democratic primary.
