Malcolm-Jamal Warner's shocking death raises new swimming safety fears — here's how experts say to avoid drowning in a rip current

New York Post23-07-2025
The accidental death of 'The Cosby Show' actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner has saddened the world — and raised new fears over swimming safety.
The beloved TV legend's passing comes amid a record number of drownings on NYC's beaches, where the same type of rip current that claimed Warner in Costa Rica can threaten swimmers just as quickly.
However, according to local water education non-profit Rising Tide Effect, a whopping 95% of all such fatalities are preventable — given the proper instruction.

In the event you're caught in a rip current, the best thing to do is stay calm, swim parallel to the shore out of the current, and wait for rescue or approach the shore, the experts warn.
Rip currents do not pull swimmers under — they just draw people out further from the sand, they said.
Exerting too much energy kicking or swimming against the current can, in many cases, be fatal.
A similar fate to Warner's befell MLB prospect-turned cop Chase Childers while vacationing with his family on Pawleys Island, S.C., earlier this month.
The trouble began when a woman asked the dad of three to help save her brood of five, all caught in a current.
After heroically saving the swimmers with the help of another nearby man, Childers disappeared into the water — until his body was recovered 90 minutes later by first responders.
Authorities suspect that the ballplayer's admirable rescue efforts left him without the strength to make it back to shore.
Drownings only take up to a minute to occur, so swimming close to a lifeguard when possible can often be the difference between life and death.
In Warner's case, there was no lifeguard present at the time of his death, but signs advising the presence of potential rip currents were reportedly posted on the beach.

The actor was enjoying a family vacation in Playa Grande, and was reportedly swept out into a high current between 2 and 2:30 p.m. local time.
Of the incident, Costa Rican National Police previously told The Post that he was pulled to the shore by nearby beachgoers, allowing the Costa Rica Red Cross to attempt resuscitation.
Per the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), rip currents are especially common at low tide, so be sure to keep an eye on the water, and practice advanced caution by checking beach conditions and wave forecast before arriving.
4 Prevention is as important as protection when it comes to rip currents, Krause says.

Last year, NYC saw a record seven drownings, and six of them occurred while a lifeguard was not on duty.
Per city data, only 34% of NYC residents live within a 15-minute transit ride to a NYC swimming facility, whether it be beach or pool, meaning a majority of New Yorkers make a trek to swim — and many go without swimming lessons or regular experience in water at all, leaving them at a higher risk.
In the wake of increased drownings, more shark sightings, and rising temperatures, inexperienced New York swimmers looking to beat the heat this summer are advised to stick close to the shore, build up their confidence and skills with swimming lessons or opt for pools, officials and experts warn.

Pat McAfee goes off on ‘bum ass suits at ESPN' while praising $1.6 billion WWE deal

Not everyone with the WWE has glowing things to say about ESPN. Former wrestling commentator and current ESPN host Pat McAfee called out some of the mid-level 'suits' as bums after the announcement on Wednesday that WWE and the network are teaming up on a deal to broadcast the promotion's premium live events. 'Congrats to the @WWE and @espn on getting a historic PLE deal done,' McAfee said in a post on X. 4 Pat McAfee figures to see his role only grow in the coming months with this latest move bringing WWE to ESPN. I assume all the mid-level, powerless, bum ass suits at ESPN will attempt to muddy this somehow (out of context leaks/ignorant anonymous opinions/etc.) but, in the end.. this agreement will outlive the dinosaurs currently guarding desks in Bristol and this deal will be great for ESPN. Cheers to the future.' The deal, which will run for five years and is worth $1.6 billion, will allow ESPN to broadcast WWE events such as WrestleMania, SummerSlam and the Royal Rumble as part of its new direct-to-consumer service that launches later this month. 4 Triple-H and the WWE will be on ESPN programming. Williamson was the company's executive editor and head of event and studio production. McAfee went hard after Williamson, who left ESPN in January, on multiple occasions, even saying 'I don't got a motherf–king boss' last February. ESPN and McAfee have been business partners since September 2023, when the former NFL punter inked a five-year $85 million deal.

John Cena: Hair transplant ‘completely changed the course of my life'

John Cena said the WWE audience pushed him to explore options for his hair loss after shining a light on his bald spot — and he couldn't be happier. During an interview for People's August cover story, the WWE icon — who's in the midst of a farewell tour before retiring at the end of 2025 — revealed that his November hair transplant is helping his acting career. 'They don't do anything except move your hair, one by one, from one area to another,' Cena, 48, said of the procedure. '… If somebody's going to sweat me for that, I don't think there's any shame in that. It completely changed the course of my life.' Advertisement Cena credits WWE fans for the life-changing decision. 'They're the reason for my optimism, my perseverance, my passion,' Cena said of WWE viewers. 'They don't let you get away with phoning it in, because they'll eat you alive. As I was trying to hide my hair loss, the audience was bringing it to light. 'I saw their signs that said 'The bald John Cena.' They pushed me into going to see what my options were.' NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images 'I now have a routine: red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, shampoo, conditioner — and I also got a hair transplant last November,' he said. 'I hate the fact that if there wasn't so much shame around it, I'd have gotten it done 10 years ago. I thought I was alone, but seven or eight out of 10 [men] suffer from thinning or baldness.' Advertisement When it comes to his acting career, the 'Peacemaker' star said, 'A different hairstyle can identify a part that can get me more work, do the thing I love to do.' 3 John Cena defended his Undisputed WWE championship against Cody Rhodes at MetLife Stadium on August 3, 2025 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. 'I made a promise when I started gaining some notoriety that when I'm a step slower, I will go, because there will be kids just as hungry as I was who have earned a shot to see if they can make it.' 3 John Cena and Shay Shariatzadeh attend Netflix's 'Happy Gilmore 2' New York Premiere at Jazz at Lincoln Center on July 21, 2025 in New York City. Getty Images Cena explained that his priorities have shifted at this stage of his career. 'My health and my dedication to my partner are the tip of my spear in life right now, so I think every time I go out [in the ring], I just want to make sure I'm able to give my all, but it's time to step away,' he said. Cena and his wife Shay Shariatzadeh, an engineer he met at a Vancouver restaurant in 2019, married in 2020. 'I hope to remain curious and healthy — and that's physically, spiritually, mentally,' he said. 'As long as I have love, health and curiosity for what life has to offer, I think it'll work out.'
