NSFAS STUDENTS: Accommodation payment dates confirmed
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced that it will make accommodation payments for university students on 31 May 2025. This includes catch-up payments for the 2024 academic year. This development addresses recent payment delays that have caused uncertainty and housing problems for many students.
NSFAS addressed this issue earlier this year, with Minister of Higher Education, Nobuhle Nkabane saying, 'We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by the delays in allowances – delayed payments are unacceptable. We recognise the impact of these delays as students depend entirely on their allowances for living expenses,' she said.
The Minister continued, 'The timely disbursement of TVET allowances and the NSFAS appeals process are paramount towards a streamlined and transparent funding process that ensures that no student is left behind.' She added, 'Access to education is not just a privilege, it is a fundamental right that facilitates personal and national growth.'
The delay in NSFAS accommodation payments has been attributed to administrative challenges. These include instances where landlords did not submit required documents such as lease agreements. The verification process, necessary for confirming claims and ensuring compliance with NSFAS standards, also involved checks aimed at preventing fraud. These factors contributed to the timing of the disbursement of funds to students and service providers.
Students are urged to keep in touch with their university housing offices. This is crucial to check their accommodation status and address any concerns quickly. NSFAS also asks beneficiaries to report any urgent housing issues to get help on time.

Kaizer Chiefs eye shock move for ex-Orlando Pirates striker
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly preparing a move for Bienvenu Eva Nga, with the powerful striker set to leave Chippa United at the end of June when his contract expires. The former Orlando Pirates forward is once again drawing serious interest from top clubs in the Betway Premiership, with Amakhosi said to have renewed their interest. Although Eva Nga struggled to make a major impact at Chippa United, scoring just three goals in 28 appearances, his physical presence and experience remain valued assets in the South African top flight. While Kaizer Chiefs look to strengthen their attacking options, they face stiff competition. Interest in Eva Nga isn't limited to local clubs, there's also international attention brewing. 'He won't be short of options. Apart from the local teams interested in him there is a club in Kuwait as well. That club started asking about him while he was still a Pirates player. I think they would also jump at the chance that he is now a free agent and maybe sign him,' a source revealed the last time he was available. As the transfer window approaches, Eva Nga's future remains wide open. Whether he opts for a domestic switch to Kaizer Chiefs or accepts an offer abroad, his next move will be one to watch closely. A return to Gauteng could revive his career, while a deal in the Middle East may offer a fresh start and financial security. Either way, the Cameroonian target man is unlikely to remain without a club for long. Will Kaizer Chiefs be a good hunting ground for Eva Nga? JUST IN: EFF loses court bid to interdict fuel levy increase
The Western Cape High Court has dismissed the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) application to interdict the 4% fuel levy increase. The 4% hike was announced by the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, when he tabled the revised 2025 Budget Speech for the third time in May and will be effective from Wednesday, 4 June. In challenging the proposed hike, the EFF argued that the fuel levy increase places an unjust burden on the working class and the poor, who are already reeling from rising costs of living, stagnant wages, and ongoing economic hardship. The party maintained that the levy is both economically unjust and unconstitutional, as it deepens inequality and undermines access to essential goods and services. Moreover, the EFF had argued that the standing committee on finance sits on Wednesday 4 June and it is only then that such an increase can be approved. Not before, as the 2025 fuel levy increases have been slated to go into effect the same day. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Here is the official petrol price for June 2025
The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has confirmed the official fuel price adjustments for this month which will take effect from midnight on Tuesday, 3 June. May saw volatility in the oil price and the strengthening of the rand against the dollar relative to April. This resulted in a consistent over-recovery in fuel prices. However, a hike in the general fuel levy from the latest budget undercut this by around 15 cents per litre. This has translated to a small reduction in petrol prices in June. Petrol will be cut by 5 cents per litre for 93 and 95, and there will be a decrease of 37 cents per litre for diesel.
