Jo Whiley's sadness at dad's illness as she makes important vow

Much loved Radio DJ and TV host Jo Whiley reveals her life has been filled with ups and downs so far this year
Jo Whiley says she is choosing not to slow down after hitting 60 - and thinks birthday milestones are 'not a big deal'.

After posing in a colourful magazine shoot she insisted: 'We should never say someone looks good for their age, we should just say they look good!' BBC Broadcaster Jo certainly does look good and tried out a variety of outfits before sitting down to speak to woman&home.

On turning 60 this month she insisted: 'Another birthday really isn't a big deal for me because I don't see age as important. It's something that you very much don't want to be a thing, but it becomes a thing because everybody focuses on it and asks you about it constantly. It's a bizarre situation to be in because I'm only another year older than I was last year, and a year younger than I will be next year. There's an obsession with reaching certain milestones due to your age. People focus on it too much and I don't know what to say.

'You have a birthday, you wake up the next day, and you carry on. I'm doing my radio show, going to the gym and looking after the kids, so nothing has changed at all. There's probably a focus because people used to retire earlier than they do now, and now that concept is mind-boggling."
On exercise and her body she added: 'Your body undoubtedly changes as you get older, and things don't look the same. Your skin changes, and that's one of my biggest revelations. I do weights, which has become increasingly important, but no matter how many weights I lift, I can't do anything about the skin that's hanging off on my arms, or the papery texture my skin has. Why did nobody tell me about that? I'm not quite sure what the answer is, apart from wearing long sleeves and covering up, but I don't want to do that. I wish I could say I'm great with self-care and that I moisturise my body all the time, but I'm rubbish at all of that.
I have so many aches and pains, but I consider myself very lucky to be healthy. I have got arthritis, which is really painful, and my rotator cuff in my shoulder is hurting at the moment. I haven't had any serious health issues – I get migraines sometimes, but I think they are linked to the stress and strains of living.'

The Radio DJ and TV host has also been dealing with some real highs and lows of family and work life recently, having fronted some of the BBC 's Glastonbury coverage in June and launched a new podcast called Dig It with friend Zoe Ball.
But away from the cameras she and her family have had to get their head around some big news for her father Martin, a former electrician.

She has been married to music executive Steve Morton, 60, since 1991, and they are parents to India, 32, Jude, 26, Cassius, 23, and Coco, 16.
Jo explained: 'The things that keep my feet on the ground are probably the same as everyone else's. There's all the stuff that goes with dealing with ageing parents. Dad has just been diagnosed with Parkinson's, so I need to look after him and help my mum. It's those day-to-day realities of life that keep you grounded.
'We had been suspecting something was going on with my dad for a while, so it was good to get a diagnosis, and now we're trying to make sense of it all. It's really early days, and he's quite confused about it. Something like that puts everything in perspective and stops you from worrying about rubbish. Everyone will be dealing with those things in real life. That's the reality of being my age; that you end up having more people to look after and more responsibilities.'

The news of her dad is sure to have made her feel emotional and it is a side of her which she often shows.
'I'm a sensitive person, and it's difficult for me not to show my emotions,' she explained.
'It's good to share how you're feeling. I can't imagine a life where I didn't cry. I wish I cried less and if I could take a magic pill to stop myself, I probably would. I cry when I'm tired, so I will suddenly break down for seemingly no reason.

'Someone will ask what's going on, but it's just that I'm exhausted. If I don't want anyone to know how I'm feeling, I'll cry while I'm driving or swimming, and I have to try not to swallow loads of water! Sometimes, there's just too much going on in your life and head, and the only way to deal with it is to let the tears flow.'
Another reason for tears is the changing of the family unit as her kids get older. Jo is having to prepare herself for Empty nest syndrome.

She said: 'The whole 'empty nest' thing is becoming more of a reality. It was the worst feeling in the world when India left home and went to uni. I was in floods of tears dropping her off. Coco has got two more years at home and then she'll be going off to university, and I'm already panicking about it. Any parent will know that impending sense of doom when you're shopping for kitchen utensils and feeling like you're doing a funeral procession around Ikea. The drive to uni and saying goodbye is awful, followed by the horrible feeling of heading home knowing they won't be there. I do know they'll come back, though.'
Despite turning 60, Jo is still very much heading out and about this Summer to music festivals, but it is parties closer to home she now enjoys.
She explained: 'Festivals are great, but my favourite parties are the ones we have at our house. They're a whole weekend event. We have DJ decks, lighting and candles, and it's so much fun. The day after, about 40 of us go to the Super Sausage, our local transport cafe, and have a fry-up. Then it's back to ours for films and a curry in the evening. I adore those weekends.'
* The September issue of woman&home is on sale July 24. Jo Whiley is on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds each Monday to Thursday, 7-9pm.

Prince Harry will 'never be forgiven' by two major royals despite reconciliation hope

As rumours of peace talks between Harry and King Charles continue to swirl, a royal expert has claimed that there are two senior royals who will find it difficult to forgive Prince Harry's disloyalty A royal author has claimed that two senior royals will find it difficult to forgive Prince Harry as rumours of peace talks between the Sussex camp and the royal family continue to swirl. Speculation of a royal reconciliation between Prince Harry and King Charles first emerged when senior aides for both parties were spotted having a meeting in London. ‌ While it is not known who initiated the talks, many believe the Duke of Sussex has reached out to his father to mend their rift ahead of Prince Harry's trip to the UK in September. Many royal commentators are hoping that the relationship between the father and son can be patched up, however, others are not convinced that the royal family at large will be so quick to forgive. ‌ ‌ An one has claimed that two senior royals will 'never forgive' Prince Harry after his years of damning exposés against the Firm, including his tell-all interview with Oprah alongside Meghan Markle, and his explosive autobiography Spare. Royal author Robert Jobson believes that both Prince William and Queen Camilla will have a hard time letting go of the accusations made against them in Harry's 2023 memoir. Jobson told The Sun: "He's asking for forgiveness. Well, you know, I think that his father probably will in the long term. I think he probably will. I just don't see William and Camilla doing it." Jobson added that while Harry's mother, the late Princess Diana, also authorised a tell-all autobiography about her time in the royal family, she did not make any profit from the memoir. He said: "She didn't monetise it for herself. He made a fortune out of it." ‌ In Spare, Harry mentioned Queen Camilla on more than 60 occasions, often branding her as "the Other Woman". He also accused the Queen of being "dangerous" and leaking negative stories to the press, allegedly "sacrificing him on her personal PR altar". He also pondered whether she would become his and William's "wicked stepmother" before her marriage to Charles, as they continued to grieve the loss of their mother. ‌ Prince Harry also referenced his brother Prince William on several occasions, detailing instances throughout their childhood and their ongoing rift. He even made claims that the brothers had a physical altercation. In his bombshell interview with the BBC back in May, Harry said that "some members of my family will never forgive me" for writing his memoir. But he added: "It would be nice to have that reconciliation part now. If they don't want that, that's entirely up to them." Royal expert Jennie Bond also believes that it will be difficult for Princess Anne to forgive Prince Harry if the peace talks come to fruition, given his 'extreme disloyalty' to the Firm since he quit royal life and relocated to California. Bond told the Mirror: 'To Anne, loyalty is paramount, and I suspect she feels that Harry has been extremely disloyal to his father, his brother and the monarchy. She might well find that hard to forgive.'

BBC Antiques Roadshow guest refuses to sell Titanic letter worth incredible fortune

Antiques Roadshow expert Hilary Kay met a guest whose father worked on the Titanic and survived the sinking of the vessel Antiques Roadshow's Hilary Kay had an eye-opening encounter with guests whose father, Sidney Daniels, was employed as a plate washer on the Titanic at the age of just 18. Sidney was one of the survivors of the tragic sinking and his offspring brought along a letter he penned to the beloved BBC programme. ‌ Recalling the fateful night, his daughter stated: "It was a Sunday, he was sound asleep, there was a banging and shouting and it was the night watchman. They were all a bit bleary-eyed because at first they thought it was a drill. ‌ "It wasn't until he got up on deck, there were hardly any people around at first and then officers came and turned to him and said, 'Go to these cabins'." ‌ She then explained how Sidney had been tasked with waking sleeping guests on the ship, as she went on: "Of course it was hard to wake people, they were asleep. Some reacted in different ways. One or two said 'What does this young man know? He's 18, the boat is unsinkable, we're not going up on deck'. "Others were saying, 'We've got children, they're going to get a chill if they go up on deck'. So he helped the children with the lifejackets and ushered them up on deck." ‌ Hilary chimed in on the episode which was re-aired on Sunday night: "You can imagine the scene of chaos and despair because people realised there weren't enough lifeboats." Sidney's son replied: "That was his job, to try and get people into the lifeboats and the water was rising all of the time. When all the lifeboats had gone, the water was up around his knees and he thought, 'It's time to go'. ‌ "So he dived off the side of the boat, swam away from it, came to a lifebelt and to my Dad's mind, it was too close to the boat, he was afraid when the boat went down, the suction would take them down so he said to this chap, 'It's no good here, let's swim away'. "Apparently this chap followed him and they just kept swimming. He said he saw a star in the sky which he thought was his mother and swam towards this star and eventually came to this life raft which was upside down and managed to cling onto that." ‌ "When he was on there, he said, 'I'm tired, I want to go to sleep,' and the chap next to him said, 'Don't go to sleep lad, if you do, it will be your last'. "So they sat there singing hymns trying to pass the time away." The duo had brought along a letter which had remained tucked inside Sidney's uniform pocket when he leapt from the Titanic, the Express reports. ‌ Hillary, clearly stunned by the letter, began to speak about the artefact's significance and value: "It's an extraordinary item and anything related to Titanic has this extraordinary effect on people. It is an extraordinary moment to behold something which is so linked into an extraordinary moment in history." She estimated its worth, saying: "We're talking about around £10,000, is the realistic value."
