Organisers claim MBKS ignored venue application for July 22 event, could force cancellation
KUCHING (July 11): Organisers of a public assembly to mark Sarawak Independence Day on July 22 have accused the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) of not responding to their application to use the Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field.
Saya Anak Sarawak founder Peter John Jaban claimed this could jeopardise the event's objective to honour and pay tribute to former chief minister the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem or Tok Nan.
'We, the organisers of the upcoming public gathering scheduled for 22nd July 2025, express our deep disappointment and concern over the continued silence from the office of the Mayor of Kuching South City Council regarding our official request to utilise Song Kheng Hai Rugby Ground as a venue for this meaningful and significant occasion,' he said in a press statement.
'His (Adenan) courageous and visionary leadership continues to inspire Sarawakians, and this event aims to pay tribute to his contribution to Sarawak's identity, unity, and autonomy.'
Peter said due to the lack of response from the mayor's office, the planned gathering could be cancelled as organisers do not have a suitable space to accommodate participants.
'In the past, we did not have any problem securing Song Kheng Hai Rugby Ground for our public gatherings,' he said.
He pledged the organisers are law-abiding citizens, who have shown during past events they would ensure all participants follow the law.
According to him, an application letter to use the facility was submitted on April 7, more than three months in advance, to allow sufficient time for planning and coordination.
He claimed organisers have not received any acknowledgement or response from the mayor's office.
'Such complete silence is not only unprofessional but disrespectful to the memory of Adenan and the significance of the date for Sarawakians,' he stated.
Peter said organisers also wrote to the Office of the Premier of Sarawak requesting a courtesy call to inform and brief Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg about the public event.
'Regrettably, we have also not received any reply from the Premier's Office to date.
'Let it be clearly stated that we cannot be expected to organise a large-scale and meaningful public event within less than a month,' he said.
According to him, responsible event planning requires coordination with government agencies, community engagement, logistics, security, and cultural programming.
Peter said such preparations are only possible with timely support from relevant authorities, adding public spaces such as the Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field exist to serve the people.
'We have duly notified the police well in advance and they have no objection to us organising the public gathering. As responsible and law-abiding NGOs, it is our duty to inform the police,' he said.
'Time is running out. Tok Nan's legacy deserves our respect. Sarawakians deserve better.'
On April 23, 2016, Adenan declared July 22 a public holiday .

Lam says GPS appears to be 'confused' about the priority of the matter, mistakenly linking state seat expansion with federal parliamentary representation. KUCHING (July 18): The GPS-led Sarawak government's bid to increase state assembly seats is merely a move to entrench political dominance, not to restore constitutional rights, said DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak Secretary George Lam. According to Lam, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) appeared to be 'confused' about the priority of the matter, mistakenly linking state seat expansion with federal parliamentary representation. 'Unfortunately, GPS seems to be confused about the priority of this issue, mistakenly believing that increasing state seats will lead to more federal parliamentary seats. 'In reality, their move is nothing more than an attempt to entrench their political dominance in Sarawak, and contributes nothing toward restoring our constitutional rights,' said Lam in a statement yesterday. Lam reiterated DAP Sarawak's firm support for increasing the number of parliamentary seats allocated to Sarawak, saying it was crucial for fair representation at the federal level and for the realisation of rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). 'Both DAP representatives — YB Chong Chieng Jen (Padungan) and YB Violet Yong (Pending) — have made our stand crystal clear during the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting on July 7. 'If GPS is sincere about using their political influence in the Federal Government to push for more parliamentary seats for Sarawak, every single DAP MP will vote in support of that motion,' he said. However, Lam noted that to date, there has been no indication of such an effort from GPS at the federal level. 'Instead, we only hear loud statements made within Sarawak itself — a form of political self-talk with no meaningful action,' he said. Lam pointed out that GPS currently holds one Deputy Prime Minister position and five federal Cabinet posts in the Unity Government, which gives the coalition the political platform needed to raise the matter. 'With such representation in Putrajaya, they have the capacity to bring this proposal forward at the highest level. 'Yet, what we are seeing instead is a lopsided focus on increasing state seats, with no clear plan or numbers on how many federal seats Sarawak should rightfully receive,' said Lam. He said the real need lies in stronger representation in Parliament, which would enable Sarawak to negotiate more effectively for devolution of powers and fulfil MA63 obligations. 'Sarawakians know very well that what we truly need is an increase in federal parliamentary seats, not state seats. 'Increasing state seats, on the other hand, only serves to place more political figures into the State Assembly and does nothing to help our fight for equal rights,' Lam said. Lam also challenged GPS's rationale that Sarawak's vast geography necessitates more state constituencies. 'Let's be honest – what we need are people's representatives, not representatives for forests, rivers, and trees,' he said. Following the state seat increase bill's passage, Lam urged the Election Commission (EC) to ensure a fair, transparent, and independent redelineation process. 'The upcoming redelineation exercise must be conducted with greater fairness and caution to uphold the principle of 'one person, one vote' and ensure equal vote value,' said Lam. He highlighted that densely populated urban areas such as Kuching and Sibu are severely underrepresented and must be prioritised. 'Redelineation must prioritise these areas in order to reflect the true spirit of equality as enshrined in the Federal Constitution,' he added. Lam also outlined the legal redelineation process, where the EC must hold a one-month public display after preparing the proposed boundaries. During this period, he said any group of 100 or more registered voters from an affected constituency can file a formal objection. 'If this threshold is met, the EC must review and revise the boundaries, followed by a second round of public display. 'Once the second display concludes, no further objections can be submitted,' Lam explained. The final boundaries, he said, will be tabled in Parliament and gazetted before being implemented in the next general election. Calling the process a 'critical part of our democratic system,' Lam urged voters to educate themselves and take part actively. 'When the time comes, we must be prepared to act and stand up for a fair and just electoral map. Kota Kinabalu: Sabahans are faced with two major ideological paths in the 17th Sabah State Election – Malaysia for Sabahans (M4S) or Sabah for Sabahans (S4S). While S4S is being championed by local political parties advocating state autonomy and local interests, M4S is framed as a more national-centric agenda promoting inclusivity and unity within the Malaysian Federation. Advertisement Umno Central War Room Secretariat Chief, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, said the M4S concept aims to promote national unity, integration and equity while still respecting the rights and interests of Sabahans. 'M4S also means that Sabahans are not only for Sabah but for entire Malaysia. After all, we are one nation of 14 states and territories,' he said. He was speaking during a working visit to the state on Wednesday night, adding that the S4S agenda is more limited in scope compared to the broader and more inclusive M4S. However, he made no reference to the Sarawak situation which also emphasises a 'Sarawak first' policy, where Federal Government departments are also headed by Sarawakians, unlike in Sabah. According to Maslan, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 Sabahans are currently in Peninsular Malaysia for work, education or due to intermarriage. It is a testament, he said, to the inclusive nature of the Malaysian federation. 'Wouldn't it be better for Malaysia to belong to all Sabahans? Sabahans can travel to Sarawak and the Peninsula, and at the same time, Sarawakians and Peninsular Malaysians can find a home here in Sabah too,' he said. He said many from the peninsula and Sarawak are already integrated into Sabah society, serving as police officers, military personnel, teachers, doctors, nurses, technicians, engineers, and more. He urged Sabahans to view the M4S framework in a broader light, describing S4S as a seasonal slogan that tends to re-emerge during elections. On Sabah umno's autonomy, particularly in selecting candidates, he said the party employs a consultative approach, carefully listening to every proposal submitted. 'But let's be clear. There are no Peninsular Malaysians heading Umno at any level in Sabah. It is the Sabahans who lead the party here.' At the same time, Ahmad said Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) needed to win all, or at least a majority of the seats it contests if it hoped to be the core component in forming a new unity government after the election. He believes this is achievable if the party machinery can rally voters to unite behind Umno-BN candidates, with the party expected to contest up to 30 seats. 'In politics, nothing is impossible. We can regain the people's trust to rise again, especially after Sabahans have experienced several changes in government,' he said.
