Why is Felix Zwayer controversial?
Felix Zwayer was once banned for six months in 2006 by the German Football Association after being linked to a match-fixing scandal involving fellow referee Robert Hoyzer.
More from Football
The incident dates back to 2004, when Zwayer allegedly accepted a bribe while working as Hoyzer's assistant in a second-division German match between Wuppertaler SV and Werder Bremen Amateure. Hoyzer was found guilty of fixing multiple games and was given a lifetime ban.
Zwayer, however, got away with a lighter punishment as he had also helped expose the scandal. That played a role in him getting a reduced six-month suspension.
How did he get the job to officiate the final?
Despite the controversy, Zwayer has rebuilt his career and is now considered one of the top referees in Europe. Over the years, he has officiated several high-profile matches, including the UEFA Nations League final in 2023, England's Euro 2024 semi-final win over the Netherlands and Paris Saint-Germain vs Arsenal 2025 Champions League semi-final 2nd leg.
The upcoming Europa League final between two Premier League giants will be Zwayer's first European club final.
When Zwayer was criticised by Bellingham
Zwayer's name came back into the headlines in 2021 when England midfielder Jude Bellingham, then playing for Borussia Dortmund, publicly criticised him after a match against Bayern Munich.
Bellingham said, 'You give a referee that has match-fixed before the biggest game in Germany… what do you expect?'

The comment referred to Zwayer's past suspension. As a result, Bellingham received a hefty fine from the German FA. Bellingham's comment had come after a 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich.

Spurs Agree Terms With Brentford To Bring In New Boss Frank Thomas: Reports
Last Updated: Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly agreed with Brentford to appoint Thomas Frank as head coach after sacking Ange Postecoglou. Seems like Spurs are ready for yet another rebuild under new management. Reports on Thursday suggest that Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Premier League rivals Brentford to make Thomas Frank their head coach following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou. Life in the Premier League is never easy, and former Spurs boss Postecoglou learnt it the hard way, being sacked 16 days after winning a historic Europa League title, bringing an end to a 17-year trophy drought. The 59-year-old Australian paid the price for a disastrous Premier League campaign, which saw the team finish in 17th place—their worst-ever result—with 22 defeats and 65 goals conceded. Spurs then set their sights on Frank after dismissing Postecoglou last week, and made an official approach to Brentford earlier this week. Reports from BPA and TalkSport stated that discussions initially centred on Frank's current terms at Brentford and further talks were required over which backroom staff he would take with him. Well, Spurs have seemingly already set the plan to secure Thomas and a rebuild in motion, by also bringing in his assistant from Brentford, Justine Cochrane, on Thursday. Frank's contract with Brentford was set to run until 2027. It is understood he has a release clause of about £10 million ($13.6 million). PA announced on Thursday that a deal had been reached, and the Athletic reported that Spurs were set to confirm the appointment of the 51-year-old Dane. Frank led Brentford back to the top flight in 2021 after a 74-year absence and has since secured the west London club's place in the Premier League. He began his coaching career with the Danish national team's youth setup before spending three years at Brondby. Frank then joined Brentford as an assistant coach, eventually taking over from Dean Smith when he moved to Aston Villa. After narrowly missing out in the 2020 Championship play-off final, Brentford succeeded in winning promotion through the play-offs the following year. Since then, the Bees have finished 13th, ninth, 16th, and 10th despite regularly selling some of their best players. (with agency inputs)
