Rupee falls 16 paise against US dollar
However, sliding global crude prices supported the domestic unit, according to forex traders.
Mumbai, Jul 16 (PTI) The rupee declined 16 paise against the US dollar to close at 85.92 on Wednesday, as a strengthening American currency amid uncertainties over the India-US trade pact hit investor sentiment.
In the previous session, the rupee appreciated 16 paise to close at 85.76 against the US dollar.
'The Indian rupee experienced notable volatility today, initially weakening against a robust US dollar before recovering mid-session due to dollar supply, only to conclude with net losses.
'This movement follows a three-day consolidation phase for the USDINR pair, ranging from 85.70 to 86.05. The sentiment remains acutely favourable for the dollar, driven by expectations of a hawkish Federal Reserve post-US inflation data and persistent uncertainties regarding India-US trade agreements,' Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, said.
An Indian commerce ministry team is in Washington for another round of talks on the proposed bilateral trade agreement. The four-day talks, which started on Monday, will conclude on Thursday.
'We continue to await the outcome of the trade deal as inflows and outflows keep the rupee well entrenched in a range of 85.70 to 86.10. We expect a similar range for the rupee tomorrow (Thursday) as well,' Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was down 0.26 per cent to USD 68.53 per barrel in futures trade.
The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, dipped 0.07 per cent to 98.54.
On the domestic equity market front, the Sensex rose 63.57 points to settle at 82,634.48, while the Nifty inched up 16.25 points to 25,212.05.
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 1,858.15 crore on a net basis on Wednesday, according to exchange data. PTI TRB SHW BAL SHW SHW

Nuvama institutional equities has retained its optimistic view on Torrent Pharma. This is largely due to the company's increased focus on the domestic business and continued efforts to add inorganic growth drivers such as JB Pharma. The brokerage firm has maintained its 'Buy' on the stock and has revised the target price to ₹4,180 (up from ₹3,920). "While the stock trades at a premium valuation (39x FY27E Earnings per share), we think it can sustain due to superior capital allocation. Additionally, the JB acquisition is a long-term value creation driver for Torrent Pharma," Nuvama said in its report. The pharma major has 21 brands in the top 500 brands in the IPM list. Out of this, more than 14 brands have made sales exceeding ₹100 crore. "On the technical charts, the stock price has broken out of a bullish flag pattern from the ₹3,400 level and is likely to trade in an uptrend in the coming sessions, with upside potential to ₹4,000. Investors and traders are advised to buy the stock at the current market price with a stop loss at ₹3,300 for a target of ₹4,000. Meanwhile, ICICI Securities estimates better margins in the coming quarters alongside mixed performance in global markets. "In Q2FY26, it (Torrent Pharma) has also launched gEntresto in the US, which should drive up the momentum in this segment. Growth across Germany is expected to be tepid in coming quarters, as regulatory issue at the supplier's plant will likely take time to estimate revenue/Ebitda/PAT CAGRs of 28 per cent/28.2 per cent/20 per cent over FY25–27 with flattish margin of 32.6 per cent in FY27 boosted by acquisition of JB Chemicals," the brokerage firm stated, while maintaining 'Hold' rating on the stock with a higher target price of ₹3,530 (earlier ₹3,500).

Nifty, Sensex open in red due to consistent FPI selling, US tariff uncertainty
Mumbai [India], : The Indian stock markets opened on a weak note on Tuesday, weighed down by persistent foreign portfolio investor selling and concerns over a delay in the India-US trade deal, which may lead to a 15 per cent tariff. The Nifty 50 index opened at 24,609.65, down by 71.25 points or 0.29 per cent, while the BSE Sensex opened lower at 80,620.25, registering a loss of 270.77 points or 0.33 per cent. Market experts noted that Indian equities are currently in an oversold zone, and while a short-term technical bounce is possible, a sustained rally will likely return only if FPI flows turn positive. Ajay Bagga, a banking and market expert, told ANI, "Indian markets are facing consistent FPI selling, with secondary market FPI sales in July crossing ₹ 36,000 crores. The market is bipolar, with the primary market offering seeing strong interest and promoter selling crossing ₹ 130,000 crores year-to-date. There is no catalyst on the horizon, as the US-India trade deal seems delayed and at a 15 per cent tariff rate at best." He added, "Indian stocks are in a heavily oversold zone and the monthly expiry of a very long July is approaching with a fifth week of weak sentiment, weak positioning and underwhelming earnings. Somewhere a technical bounce will come from these oversold levels, but right now a catalyst for this is lacking. Time to hunker down and wait for things to consolidate. Ten months are over since the last all-time highs. It seems to be a lower-for-longer wait ahead." On the global front, markets shrugged off the US-EU trade deal and focused on a week packed with data on earnings, job growth, unemployment, and central bank actions. Experts noted that markets are experiencing "Trump Tariff ennui," a weariness from repeated cycles of aggressive trade threats, temporary reliefs, and eventual deals settled around the 15 to 20 per cent tariff range. Asian markets were cautious ahead of the outcome of the US-China trade talks in Stockholm, expected to conclude tonight. According to the South China Morning Post, the China tariffs deadline may be pushed by 90 days. Deals with China, Canada, and Mexico are still awaited, while markets are focusing on economic indicators and central bank policy guidance. Back home, in the broader NSE indices, the Nifty 100 was trading flat. The Nifty Midcap 100 index was up by 0.11 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap index was down by 0.04 per cent. Among sectoral indices, Nifty IT continued its decline, down by 0.36 per cent at the time of filing this report. Other sectoral performers included Nifty Auto, up by 0.06 per cent, Nifty FMCG gained 0.22 per cent, Nifty Media surged 0.34 per cent, Nifty Metal rose by 0.41 per cent, Nifty Pharma gained 0.19 per cent, Nifty PSU Bank up by 0.28 per cent, and Nifty Realty was higher by 0.20 per cent. Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research at Axis Securities, said, "The Nifty finished 156 points down yesterday and ended below the crucial 24,700 mark. Technically speaking, the ongoing decline has the 24,400-500 support area in its sights as long as immediate resistance at 25,000 is not challenged. The real test for bulls will be at 24,200 should prices get there." On the earnings front, several major Indian companies including Larsen & Toubro, NTPC, Asian Paints, Varun Beverages, GMR Airports, GE Vernova, TD India, Bank Of India, Apar Industries, Piramal Enterprises, New India Assurance Company, Amber Enterprises India Limited, Star Health & Allied Insurance Company, Welspun Corp, and Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals Corporation are scheduled to announce their Q1 results today. In other Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell by 0.83 per cent, Singapore's Straits Times declined by 0.44 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost 1.25 per cent, Taiwan's weighted index dropped 1.01 per cent, while South Korea's KOSPI index bucked the trend, gaining 0.61 per cent. Rupee falls 18 paise to 86.88 against US dollar in early trade
The rupee depreciated 18 paise to 86.88 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday as month-end dollar demand and sustained foreign fund outflows weighed on the local unit. ADVERTISEMENT Forex traders said the domestic unit traded with a negative bias as the demand for dollars from importers continued to keep the American unit well bid against the rupee. Moreover, a muted trend in domestic equities and sustained foreign fund outflows further dented investors' sentiments, they said. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 86.76 and then touched an early low of 86.88 against the American currency, registering a fall of 18 paise over its previous close. On Monday, the rupee had settled at 86.70 against the dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose marginally by 0.01 per cent to 98.64. ADVERTISEMENT Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, went up by 0.04 per cent to USD 70.07 per barrel in futures trade, as developing trade agreements eased tariff concerns and boosted future energy demands. The rupee opened on a weaker note and could fall to one-month low of 86.90 this week, said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. ADVERTISEMENT "RBI seems to be protecting the rupee intermittently but has allowed the fall in slow and steady way. Equities have also not been rupee-supportive," he said. Meanwhile, in the domestic equity market, Sensex was trading 51.09 points or 0.06 per cent higher at 80,942.11, while Nifty rose 18.30 points or 0.07 per cent to 24,699.20.
