'Crowd here not to listen, but to see how I look after losing', said Vajpayee after 1984 poll loss

Nagpur: Recalling former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee 's trademark wit, BJP city president and ex-mayor Dayashankar Tiwari on Sunday narrated how the veteran leader turned even electoral defeat into humour during his 61st birthday celebration in Nagpur. Speaking at the launch of 'Retirement', a book by city cardiologist Dr Kirti Tanna, Tiwari said that after Vajpayee lost the 1985 Lok Sabha election from Gwalior in the aftermath of Indira Gandhi's assassination, he was invited to Nagpur for his 61st birthday. Addressing the gathering then, Vajpayee had quipped that for the first time, people had not come to hear him speak, but to see how he looked after defeat. "Delivered with his trademark wit, the line drew laughter and admiration, showcasing his ability to turn setbacks into moments of connection and humour," Tiwari said. During the same event, Vajpayee was presented with a gift bag of ₹11 lakh arranged by the then party treasurer Vitthaldas Loya. In his inimitable style, Vajpayee joked that Loya was "a smart man who knows every penny," and a true Maheshwari, once again displaying his sharpness and ease of engagement. Explaining why his 61st birthday was special, Vajpayee had said that while in Maharashtra the 61st birthday is traditionally celebrated, in Uttar Pradesh it is believed a man becomes a true pundit only after 60. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Tiwari noted that Vajpayee's reflections on age were a testament to how one should live beyond 60 — with grace, humour and wisdom — qualities also echoed in Tanna's book. Dr Tanna said the launch of 'Retirement' was the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream shared with his wife. Having completed seven decades of life and over 40 years in medical practice, he described the book as his contribution to society. "Retirement is often seen as negative, a full stop. But today it is a comma — an opportunity to explore new choices," he said. Earlier, retirement meant pilgrimage and devotion, but now it can also mean travel, friendships, hobbies, and self-discovery. Stressing more on the psychological than the financial aspect, Tanna urged people to embrace this stage with enthusiasm, step out, spend time with friends and maintain balance. "There is no commercial motive, only the intent to change perceptions," he added. Former MP Girish Vyas, recalling his bond with Tanna's father, said the book is a must-read for anyone nearing retirement. He praised its clarity, use of data on global retirees' happiness, and ability to evoke reflections similar to films like Baghban. RSS city chief Rajesh Loya described retirement as "remodelling oneself." Lauding Tanna beyond his role as a skilled doctor and social worker, he said the book revealed an inspiring personal side rooted in strong values. "RSS Was Against Independence, Women's Voter Rights": Mallikarjun Kharge

Sasaram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's effusive praise of the RSS, the BJP's parent body, in his Independence Day speech drew strong criticism from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who, on Sunday, claimed that the outfit had been "opposed" to freedom from the British. Kharge was delivering a speech at Sasaram in Bihar, where a 'Voters' Adhikar Yatra' was launched in the presence of Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, besides other senior alliance partners such as RJD president Lalu Prasad. "Modi claimed, from the ramparts of the Red Fort two days ago, that the RSS is the greatest NGO, has been working selflessly for the nation for nearly 100 years and deserves credit for Independence. Our freedom fighters must be turning in their graves," exclaimed the Congress president. "These RSS people should tell us what role did they play in the struggle for Independence. They were opposed to Independence. They were also opposed to Mahatma Gandhi and his followers, who gave up their academic careers and went to jail, fighting for freedom," Kharge said. "In those days, all that the RSS people did was to convince the British imperialists of their loyalty, begging for mercy to evade arrest. And Modi said what he said... I therefore say Modi is such a dangerous man. People must vote him out if they want to keep their right to vote safe," he said. Modi has been winning elections by stealing votes and while in power, he has been stealing the jobs meant for the youth and the maximum support price that farmers should be getting. All that his government seems to be interested in is changing the syllabi of schools and colleges, Kharge alleged. "They have also been harassing opposing parties through all possible means. Governors appointed by the Centre have become cronies of the Union government. Election Commission, too, has become their agent," he added. Kharge also claimed that the RSS and its sympathisers were opposed to universal adult suffrage, particularly women getting the right to vote, and they had "warned Jawaharlal Nehru that empowered females will vote him out". "But Nehru, with associates like BR Ambedkar, took a progressive stance. Women and deprived sections were given their due. People of Sasaram may recall that this is a Lok Sabha seat which Dalit icon Babu Jagjivan Ram represented several times on a Congress ticket," the AICC president said. "After Jagjivan Ram, the mantle was passed on to his daughter Meira Kumar, who also became the first woman to be elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker. I would request the people of Bihar to keep these things in mind. "The rights of voters here are under attack. The names of 65 lakh people have been deleted from the electoral rolls in the name of special intensive revision. Most of them are said to be Dalits, OBCs, poor migrant labourers, women and those belonging to the minority community," Kharge claimed.

Heavy rains that continued overnight also triggered landslides in Changda village of Kathua and Dilwan-Hutli in Lakhanpur but no major damage was reported from the area. The rains submerged several low-lying areas in the district and the railway line passing through Kathua was also shut. This fresh string of cloudbursts and landslides in Kathua came a few days after a cloudburst triggered flash floods in Chisoti village in Kishtwar district on August 14, at least 60 people dead, more than 100 injured and several people missing. In Kathua, the roads leading to the affected villages were damaged and washed away in some places, and all the rivers and canals in the area were flowing above the danger mark on Sunday. The officials of the district administration as well as disaster management teams had to walk several kilometres to reach the affected villages. "Continous rains triggered landslides and all the houses in these areas were buried under the debris of mud, sand and stone from the nearby hill. Seven persons were killed and 11 others injured in two villages. We have performed the last rites of all the people killed and our teams are working on the restoration plan," deputy commissioner of Kathua Rajesh Sharma told ET. Union home minister Amit Shah spoke to lieutenant governor of J&K Manoj Sinha and chief minister Omar Abdullah on the cloudburst in Kathua and assured all support from the central government. Abdullah announced ex-gratia assistance to the deceased from the CM's relief fund. Rescue Ops Continue in Chisoti Meanwhile, the rescue operation in Kishtwar continued for the fourth day on Sunday, even as the death toll continued to increase and several people remained missing. "Our rescue and rehabilitation operations continue. Death toll has reached 61 and several injured people have been sent home after treatment," deputy commissioner of Kishtwar Pankaj Kumar told ET. The Jammu-based White Knight Corps of the Indian Army said that it had intensified rescue and relief efforts in Chisoti village and that the Army's engineer bridging teams along with equipment had started construction of a bridge at the site of Chisoti Nala.
