Celebrate VE Day with a 'fascinating' true story about Queen Elizabeth

Metro06-05-2025
On May 8, 1945, Princess Elizabeth joined the crowds in London to celebrate VE Day – an evening she later called 'one of the most memorable nights of my life'.
After becoming the heir presumptive to the English throne aged just 10 after the abdication of her uncle Edward VIII, her life path quickly changed.
However, a few years after Britain entered the Second World War in 1939, she put her hand up for public service, marking a life-long commitment to serving others.
The teenager did her part for war efforts, helping support the Queen's Wool Fund, which bought yarn to knit into military garments and offering messages of support to other children evacuated from cities in radio broadcasts.
She later trained as a driver and a mechanic, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. At the time it made her the first female member of the royal family to join the military.
When the end of the war was announced later that year, the Princess, then aged 19, and her younger sister Margaret begged their parents – King George VI and Queen Elizabeth – to allow them and join the celebrations in the capital.

Their night out was the subject of the 2015 film A Royal Night Out, which starred Sarah Gadon as the teenage Princess Elizabeth and Bel Powley as Princess Margaret, as they ventured out of Buckingham Palace to enjoy the VE Day celebrations.
Although some details of the story were fictionalised on screen, it was largely well received by critics and audiences.
The movie, which is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime, was called 'sweet', 'charming' and 'heartwarming'.
After five years of war, the streets of London erupted into a massive celebration, with parades, thanksgiving services and street parties.
An estimated 50,000 people were crowded around Piccadilly Circus by midnight, with music playing on gramophones and bands setting up too, while dance halls stayed open until midnight.
In the 1985 interview with the BBC, Queen Elizabeth recalled asking her parents if she and her sister, then aged 14, could 'go out and see for ourselves' after victory was declared.
'I remember we were terrified of being recognised…I remember lines of unknown people linking arms and walking down Whitehall, all of us just swept along on a tide of happiness and relief,' she said.
After a day spent waving to crowds from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, around 8pm the pair were accompanied by a group of 16 members of the royal household.
One of them was the princess's cousin Margaret Rhodes, who once said: 'I don't think they'd ever been out among millions of people. It was just freedom – to be an ordinary person.'
To blend in with the crowds, the future Queen wore her Auxiliary Transport Service uniform.
After making their way into the centre of London they eventually ended up at The Ritz, where they took part in a lively conga, an act that left some older ladies 'looking faintly shocked' as they also witnessed a group of drunk young people at the famous hotel.
Staying out until 1am, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret ended up in the Royal Parks on their way back to the palace. More Trending
By midnight, an estimated 50,000 people had gathered around The Mall, with the King and Queen deciding to make another surprise appearance from the balcony.
Years later Queen Elizabeth recalled watching her parents on the balcony.
'After crossing Green Park, we stood outside and shouted, 'We want the King' and were successful in seeing my parents on the balcony, having cheated slightly because we sent a message into the house to say we were waiting outside. I think it was one of the most memorable nights of my life.'
A Royal Night Out is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Strictly fans fiercely defend BBC show as they make desperate plea over axe fears

BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing has hit the headlines over the last few weeks after being caught up in a number of scandals, however hardcore fans are fighting for it Strictly Come Dancing fans have furiously defended the BBC show amid calls for it to be axed. The series has been wrapped up in a number of scandals ahead of its latest series, with the BBC reportedly calling in police to investigate claims of cocaine use among the cast. ‌ Bosses are said to have contacted the Metropolitan Police after launching an inquiry into claims that two of its stars had used cocaine. "It's a significant new development in the BBC 's recent string of crises that they have now got the police involved in investigating allegations surrounding Strictly," a source said. ‌ It comes after the series also faced backlash over its 2025 line-up, with some criticising the level of celebrities who've been confirmed for the show, branding it "underwhelming". ‌ However, many fans are fiercely defending the show after some have called for Strictly to be axed after 21 years on our screens. After Channel 5's Jeremy Vine Show debated whether it was time for the show to end, many took to X to advocate for Strictly. "No! I love Strictly and look forward to it. Only good thing about Autumn," one fan wrote. Another said: "Don't be ridiculous it's a great show !!" A third wrote: "No. It's one of the best shows on tv and just because something gets mentioned in a paper. Doesn't make it true." While a fourth said: "You seriously can't blame the show, which is hugely popular for some of the douche bags that manage to get on it. If you go around every tv show or work place, you're going to find wrong uns! Ridiculous hysteria." ‌ Meanwhile on Reddit, some fans were vocal about their support for this year's line-up - which includes Love Island's Dani Dyer, TikTok star George Clarke and ITV's Ross King. Gary Lineker sends seven-word message to BBC chief after what he saw on Match of the Day

Gary Lineker has sent a message of praise to the BBC after tuning into the first Match of the Day programme aired since his departure, which Mark Chapman hosted on Saturday evening Gary Lineker was full of praise when asked about the return of Match of the Day. The flagship show returned on Saturday for the first time since Lineker's exit. ‌ Mark Chapman took up hosting duties, but other than that, it was very much a familiar Match of the Day set-up. The trio of Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan were announced by the BBC in January as Lineker's replacements, with the long-time lead presenter ultimately cutting ties with the organisation in light of sparking an antisemitism row. ‌ Alex Kay-Jelski, who was hired as the Beeb's director of sport in April last year, mooted changes to the show after Lineker's departure. However, the 64-year-old was pleased that little had been altered with a new era ushered in, commending his former boss for not fixing something that wasn't broken. ‌ Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast alongside ex-BBC colleagues Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, Lineker opened up about how he felt watching the show he hosted for 26 years return to our screens. "Alan, you were doing Match of the Day last night. I must say, I enjoyed it," he admitted. "I went out for dinner, then I came home in time to watch it. "Thought it was really good. Chappers did a great job. There was a lot of talk, wasn't there, that they were going to change things, and you know what it's like, you get a new guy in, new head of sport, thinking he wants to do this and wants to do that. "But, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' I think that was very much the most sensible decision, and I thought the programme was great." Host Chapman was joined by established pundit Shearer and a new addition in Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney on Saturday's first show of the new Premier League season, and Lineker approved of the latter's presence. ‌ "I thought Wayne Rooney did really well, as well as yourself, Alan, so good analysis in there," Lineker stated. "It was so nice watching it, holding a glass of wine!" Having taken over from Des Lynam in 1999, Match of the Day had long been synonymous with Lineker, but the ex-England striker claimed it wasn't strange now watching on from home. "It wasn't weird, really, no. I was quite relaxed," he continued. "I was thinking, 'I haven't got a three-and-a-half-hour journey at the end of the show.' ‌ "I really enjoyed watching it. It is the first time that I have watched Match of the Day on a Saturday night for I don't know how many years. "The only time I ever missed the show was if I'd take the odd Saturday off to have a holiday, and I'd go somewhere, so it had been so long since I'd watched it." BBC Destination X's fate 'revealed' ahead of debut series finale

The future of BBC series Destination X has reportedly been confirmed. Destination X: Darren gets emotional as he chats about his family Reality programme Destination X is poised to return for a second series, according to reports. ‌ Sources have claimed BBC bosses have greenlit another run following a confidential meeting with producers. ‌ They're planning to reveal the news later this month. ‌ A show insider said: "Everyone at the BBC thinks Destination X is a cracking show, so they want to bring it back in 2026. "It's a clear sign that they have faith it could become one of the biggest shows on TV," reports the Daily Star. Rob Brydon is set to be offered a lucrative deal to return as presenter, as they believe he is "perfect" for the programme. Production on the second series is expected to begin within months and creators are already exploring potential filming locations. Destination X has emerged as a viewing phenomenon since debuting last month, and episodes have been attracting more than four million viewers. ‌ It has been demolishing ITV reality programme The Fortune Hotel in its Wednesday and Thursday evening slot. The format originally premiered in Belgium in 2023 and proved enormously popular. Subsequently, versions have launched in The Netherlands, Denmark and the US. ‌ The Mirror has approached the BBC for comment. Speaking of the appeal of doing the show, Rob previously revealed: 'I love the thought of the scale of it, because I've never done anything in television with that scale. We go all over Europe to some fantastic places, so the appeal was working on a show of that scale.' ‌ He added that he took some inspiration from The Traitors host Claudia Winkleman, saying: 'I did look to Claudia on The Traitors, I love the lightness of touch there… I didn't want to get in the way of the show, so I was very aware of that. 'I just wanted to be the bridge between the viewer and the contestants, because people say this, but it's true, they are the stars. 'Their personalities really come out over the course of the series and for me, watching that first one, you see the beginnings of relationships and people's characters blossom.' Destination X is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
