Trump to get 'third-tier' seat at Pope's funeral after mocking Biden's position for Queen's service

Donald Trump could be humbled during Pope Francis' funeral as the US leader is likely set to be given a "third-tier" seat after he mocked Joe Biden for his position during Queen Elizabeth II's funeral three years ago, claiming "location is everything". As one of the most famous faces in the world, the US president is not accustomed to playing second place but he could be disappointed by seating arrangements for the Pope's funeral on Saturday. Despite being one of the first heads of state to confirm his attendance at the historic memorial, Trump is unlikely to get a place in the front row of dignitaries. Foreign dignitaries will be seated in a block to one side of Francis' coffin while archbishops, bishops, patriarchs and cardinals will be seated opposite them. However, Vatican protocol suggests that when Trump arrives at St Peter's Basilica on Saturday morning he might not even be placed in the second row. While the Vatican has not released any official details of the seating plan, details from the last funeral of a sitting pope indicate that Trump might have to settle for a third-row seat. During the funeral of Polish pontiff John Paul II in 2005, Catholic European royalty - including the King and Queen of Spain and those of Belgium - were given priority seating at the front row. Next came non-Catholic royals, which for Francis' funeral will include the Prince of Wales, who is set to attend the funeral on behalf of King Charles III, as well as the King and Queen of Sweden and the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Norway. The funeral will be held in St Peter's Square in Rome at 10am on Saturday (Image: POOL/AFP via Getty Images) World leaders came third, including heads of state and other foreign dignitaries. For Francis' funeral, this will include Trump as well as Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president; Giorgia Meloni, the Italian prime minister; and Javier Milei, the president of Argentina. Traditionally, world leaders are seated in alphabetical order according to the name of their country in French. Trump will also be joined in the world leaders section by Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky. It comes as their relationship becomes increasingly volatile after Trump accused Zelensky of hindering peace in the war against Russia this week. If Trump's reaction to former president Biden's position during Queen Elizabeth II's funeral is anything to go by, then he could view his placement at the Pope's funeral as a sign of disrespect. Biden was seated in the 14th row for the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II (Image: POOL/AFP via Getty Images) Biden was seated in the 14th row during the Queen's funeral in 2022. His placement was in line with protocol that leaders of the realms that retain the monarch as their head of state were seated first and elected Commonwealth leaders behind them. But Trump brutally mocked Biden, claiming it indicated there was "no respect" for the US. "This is what's happened to America in just two short years. No respect," he wrote on social media. "However, a good time for our president to get to know the leaders of certain Third World countries." Trump claimed the situation would have been different if he were president, adding: 'If I were president, they wouldn't have sat me back there – and our Country would be much different than it is right now.:" He concluded: 'In real estate, like in politics and in life, location is everything.' The Pope's funeral will mark the biggest gathering of world leaders since Trump's January inauguration. The seating arrangements could create diplomatic awkwardness, Catherine Pepinster, a former editor of The Tablet and a commentator on the Catholic Church told The Telegraph . She explained: 'One of the interesting aspects of a ceremony such as this is that the Holy See has diplomatic relations with countries such as Russia and Iran, which may mean that world leaders who would not usually meet, would encounter one another in Rome, either the night before the funeral or at the actual ceremony."

NATO jets scrambled as Russia launches brutal new attacks despite Putin 'peace claims'

NATO has ramped up its air defense, with fighter jets on high alert following Russia's aggressive strikes in Western Ukraine, coming just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin was accused of "targeting civilians. " The military alliance's Armed Forces Operational Command announced that it had increased patrols over Polish airspace adjacent to the Ukrainian border. The command stated: "The steps taken are aimed at ensuring safety in areas bordering the threatened areas." Additionally, Poland's radar and reconnaissance capabilities were heightened, with officials declaring their forces ready to act "immediately" if the situation escalates, with the Polish President, Andrzej Duda, regularly warning of the threat posed by Russia and pleading with Donald Trump to station nuclear weapons in the country as a deterrent. After the cessation of Russia's long-range airstrikes on Ukraine, military flights over Polish skies have ended, the statement clarified. It continued: "Poland's air defense and radar systems, which had been activated in response, are now back to routine operations. Authorities confirmed there were no breaches of Polish airspace. Meanwhile, Putin has been slammed for claiming to want peace but launching further attacks.
