AmCham, MOFA director discuss public-private ties for APEC summit
The event was part of the institution's policy talks series, aimed at providing a valuable platform for senior policymakers and industry leaders to engage in dialogue on pressing issues affecting the US-Korea economic alliance.
'The government's ongoing efforts to engage the business community are crucial,' Kim said, 'to ensure Korea's APEC agenda delivers tangible results across the region.'
She emphasized Korea's commitment to inclusive public-private collaboration through APEC's unique mechanisms, such as the APEC Business Advisory Council, while detailing a range of initiatives spanning digital transformation, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, health care and SME development.
US business leaders in sectors including IT, biotechnology and energy voiced strong support for Korea's APEC initiatives, particularly those focused on artificial intelligence and demographic change.
While outlining the Korean government's strategic vision and key priorities for the upcoming APEC Summit, Kim also shared updates on the Third Senior Officials' Meeting and Economic Leaders' Week.
AmCham Chairman and CEO James Kim remarked that the summit would allow Korea to demonstrate global leadership amid rising geopolitical tensions and rapid technological change.
'With digital innovation, supply chain resilience, and regulatory reform emerging as top priorities, this year's APEC platform presents a powerful opportunity to strengthen public-private collaboration,' he said.

Lee, Philippine president discuss economic cooperation in phone talks
President Lee Jae Myung spoke by phone with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday and discussed ways to expand cooperation in trade, infrastructure and shipbuilding, Lee's office said. In their first conversation since Lee took office in early June, the two leaders noted that South Korea has become the largest investor in, and the largest source of visitors to, the Philippines, and agreed to continue the momentum in brisk exchange and cooperation, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a written briefing. "The two leaders discussed expanding trade and investment based on the Korea-Philippines free trade agreement," Kang said. "They also discussed broadening the mutually beneficial cooperation, including Korean companies' participation in the Philippines' infrastructure projects, such as maritime bridges and railways, as well as the shipbuilding industry," she added. During the talks, Lee described the Philippines as a "long-standing ally" that was the first Asian nation to participate in the 1950-53 Korean War and sent the largest contingent among Asian countries, according to the office. Trade minister meets Japanese envoy, US legislators over economic cooperation
Korea's trade minister met with the Japanese ambassador to South Korea on Thursday and discussed ways to strengthen the countries' economic partnership amid growing uncertainties in the global trade environment, officials said. Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo met with Amb. Koichi Mizushima in Seoul earlier in the day, as President Lee Jae Myung prepares to visit Japan to hold his first summit talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba next Saturday. Yeo highlighted the importance of strengthening practical economic cooperation between the two countries, as South Korea and Japan mark 60 years since the normalization of diplomatic relations. The minister also proposed working together to stabilize supply chains and solve trade-related issues in areas such as artificial intelligence and climate change. Further, Yeo proposed fostering communication between the two countries' overseas missions and trade promotion agencies to ensure the successful hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, summit, set to be held in South Korea, and the Osaka Kansai Expo in Japan this year. Separately, Yeo held a meeting with visiting US Rep. Richard McCormick and Rep. Beth Van Duyne, seeking to secure a stable trade environment. The meeting focused on bolstering economic cooperation as uncertainties linger after a recent tariff agreement between Seoul and Washington. The minister asked for their support, indicating the significant South Korean investments in their home states, spanning chips, energy and automobiles. Noting that "many areas still need negotiating between interested parties," Yeo asked them to pay extra attention to "creating a stable environment for Korean companies to trade and invest," according to the ministry. Samsung Electronics has been building a new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Taylor, Texas.
