The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea announced Wednesday that it hosted a policy gathering with Kim Ji-hee, Director-General for International Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to explore avenues for public-private cooperation ahead of the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Korea, scheduled for October.
The event was part of the institution's policy talks series, aimed at providing a valuable platform for senior policymakers and industry leaders to engage in dialogue on pressing issues affecting the US-Korea economic alliance.
'The government's ongoing efforts to engage the business community are crucial,' Kim said, 'to ensure Korea's APEC agenda delivers tangible results across the region.'
She emphasized Korea's commitment to inclusive public-private collaboration through APEC's unique mechanisms, such as the APEC Business Advisory Council, while detailing a range of initiatives spanning digital transformation, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, health care and SME development.
US business leaders in sectors including IT, biotechnology and energy voiced strong support for Korea's APEC initiatives, particularly those focused on artificial intelligence and demographic change.
While outlining the Korean government's strategic vision and key priorities for the upcoming APEC Summit, Kim also shared updates on the Third Senior Officials' Meeting and Economic Leaders' Week.
AmCham Chairman and CEO James Kim remarked that the summit would allow Korea to demonstrate global leadership amid rising geopolitical tensions and rapid technological change.
'With digital innovation, supply chain resilience, and regulatory reform emerging as top priorities, this year's APEC platform presents a powerful opportunity to strengthen public-private collaboration,' he said.
'As a proud member of the APEC CEO Summit Task Force, AmCham is committed to working closely with the Korean government and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry to ensure Korea's host year delivers meaningful outcomes that advance the shared interests of both the US-Korea economic partnership and the broader Asia-Pacific region,' he added.

New NIS chief urges political neutrality, vows efforts for security, peace

The new chief of South Korea's spy agency said Wednesday that the organization must reflect on its past and take full responsibility, if necessary, with regards to concerns over its political neutrality. National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director Lee Jong-seok made the remarks during his inauguration ceremony, where he also pledged to build a more efficient agency dedicated to safeguarding national security and peace. "The NIS should be solely committed to national security and advancing the national interest, but many people have raised concerns that some officials have, at times, acted in ways that cast doubt on their political neutrality, straying from the agency's core mission," Lee said. "We must examine our past honestly and take full responsibility when necessary," he added, stressing the importance of "strict political neutrality and democratic transparency." Lee also pledged to dedicate all efforts to building an "efficient and results-driven NIS," outlining two key missions of ensuring a "safe and peaceful" nation and supporting "pragmatic, national-interest-based diplomacy." Speaking of inter-Korean relations, Lee assessed that tensions have escalated to a point where a military clash could occur at any time, and stressed the need for his agency to mobilize all of its intelligence capabilities on North Korea to bolster national security, reduce cross-border military tensions and help open channels for dialogue. The new chief also called for accelerating the advancement of the NIS' scientific and technological intelligence capabilities, including a full transition of operations to artificial intelligence. "We must actively engage in early-warning intelligence efforts and collect and analyze the cutting-edge information needed to shape the nation's future strategy, while providing timely support to relevant government agencies," Lee said. [Best Brand] Ambassador Hotel Group marks 70 years as pioneer in Korea's hospitality industry

Ambassador Hotel Group, Korea's first privately owned hotel enterprise, celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. The group began its journey in 1955 with the opening of Geum-Soo-Jang, a 19-room hotel. Now operating 28 hotels across eight major cities nationwide, the group has grown into a leading force in Korean hospitality. Its flagship property, The Ambassador Seoul- A Pullman Hotel, formerly Geum-Soo-Jang, exemplifies the company's legacy of innovation and tradition. The hotel underwent a major renovation in 2022. With the hotel's 264 guest rooms and 40 new residences underway, the property offers views of Namsan and downtown Seoul. Ambassador's long-standing global partnership with France's Accor Group, dating back to 1987, has brought international brands such as Pullman, Novotel, Mercure, and Ibis to Korea. Their collaboration deepened in 2006 with the creation of Accor-Ambassador Korea (AAK), the first locally incorporated joint venture between a Korean and international hotel group. Through the Ambassador Academy, the company fosters the next generation of hoteliers. The academy provides staff training as well as career education for aspiring hospitality professionals. The group has also founded Eujong Hall, a private museum located in the former residence of its founder, Suh Hyeon-su, and current Chairman Suh Jung-ho, preserving the company's rich history. Culinary excellence is also a hallmark of the group. The Ambassador Seoul features six dining venues, including Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant Haobin, gourmet grocerant 1955 Groceria and The King's buffet, recognized as Korea's first all-day buffet. Guests can also enjoy an outdoor heated pool, wellness center and premium event spaces such as the Grand Ballroom and Club Ambassador Lounge.

Hotel HDC to transform hotels into multifunctional cultural spaces

Hotel HDC marked its 20th anniversary by hosting a forum on changes and outlook in the hotel investment environment in Seoul on June 19. The event, which also unveiled the company's growth story and future vision, featured a presentation by Kim Min-joon, senior vice president at global commercial real estate firm JLL Korea. The forum included panel discussions with experts such as Kim Dae-kwan, dean of Kyung Hee University's School of Hotel and Tourism Management; Kim Sung-eun, director of the Korea Tourism Organization; and executives from Deloitte Consulting and asset management firms. The discussions focused on the evolving hotel investment landscape and prospects for the future. Kim of JLL Korea noted, 'After the (COVID-19) pandemic, hotels were seen as high-risk assets, leading to investor aversion. However, since 2022, hotel demand has recovered rapidly, demonstrating greater resilience than other commercial real estate sectors such as office or retail.' He added, 'Luxury hotels and resorts, driven by rebound in travel and increased demand for luxury tourism, have seen higher average daily rates and RevPAR (revenue per available room) than prepandemic levels, making them more attractive to investors.' The forum also addressed a shift in investment strategies. 'Office vacancies have risen, and retail faces profitability risks due to e-commerce,' Kim explained. 'As a result, there's a significant increase in institutional and fund demand for hotels as a diversified investment asset.' He highlighted that more investors are converting existing office, retail and residential buildings into hotels, thereby reducing the risks and costs associated with new developments. Hotel HDC, known for launching the Park Hyatt Seoul in 2005, emphasized its continued expansion in the luxury and lifestyle hotel market. The company has since opened Park Hyatt Busan in 2013, Andaz Seoul Gangnam in 2019 and Voco Seoul Myeongdong in 2024. Looking ahead, Hotel HDC is advancing with major urban development projects, including a Marriott hotel as part of the "Seoul One Project," a 4.5 trillion-won ($3,303,722,193) development near Kwangwoon University Station, and the renovation of Doosan Tower in Dongdaemun into a luxury hotel. The company is also expanding into the food and beverage sector, with plans to partner with renowned French pastry brand Pierre Herme. 'Pierre Herme is not just a dessert brand, but a strategic partner that can elevate the culinary experience across our hotels,' said a Hotel HDC business development representative. HDC CEO Lee Sung-ryong concluded, 'The next 20 years will focus on expanding content and customer experience, enhancing our strategy to transform hotels into multifunctional cultural spaces.'
