Solo parent OFWs honored by DMW, Miss Universe PH 2025

Filipino Times23-04-2025

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and Miss Universe Philippines 2025 candidates paid tribute to solo parent OFWs during a wellness event held on April 22 at the DMW AKSYON Center in Makati City.
The activity, held in line with National Solo Parents Week, aimed to support the well-being of solo parents working abroad and their children through counseling and wellness sessions.
Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac of the DMW emphasized that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had directed agencies to prioritize the welfare of OFWs' families. 'Si Pangulong Marcos, noong unang-una niyang nakadaupang-palad si Secretary Toots Ople, ang binigyang pansin nya ay ang OFW families, bago pa man ang ating mga OFWs,' Cacdac said.
The event promoted access to social protection services, aligned with Republic Act 11861 or the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act. 'Nagkaroon tayo ng patakaran para bigyan ng proteksyon ang mga OFW solo parents. Kabilang dito ang pagpapadali ng mga proseso dahil alam namin na gusto n'yong igugol ang bakasyon n'yo sa inyong mga anak at mga mahal sa buhay,' he added.
Twelve Miss Universe PH candidates joined the OFW solo parents and their children in a sharing session where they listened to personal stories of strength and sacrifice.
DMW officials assured continuous support to solo parents, with Undersecretary Patricia Yvonne Caunan stating, 'Wag na wag n'yong mararamdaman na mag-isa kayo. Lagi kayong may tahanan sa DMW at may kakampi sa Miss Universe Philippines.'

Marcos orders thorough review of P200 wage hike proposal's economic impact

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed a comprehensive review of the economic ramifications of the proposed ₱200 daily wage increase, according to Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro. The wage hike, recently passed by the House of Representatives under House Bill 11376, aims to raise the minimum wage for private-sector workers nationwide. Speaking at a palace briefing, Castro said the President wants to ensure that any wage adjustment will be truly beneficial to Filipino workers and will take into consideration the recommendations of wage boards, which are also creations of Congress. 'This is the President's message: 'We will look at the economic implications and consider the opinions of wage boards,'' Castro said, emphasizing that the administration is committed to what's best for Filipino laborers. Castro also noted that all stakeholder perspectives will be weighed before any decision is made, as the bill is still pending in the Senate. 'It is still under Senate deliberation. The President is committed to reviewing the economic consequences to ensure any move will be fair and beneficial,' she added. Business groups, including the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP), have criticized the measure, warning that the increase could have adverse effects on both businesses and workers. ECOP chairman Edgardo Lacson argued that the proposal may be economically harmful and is unlikely to gain final approval, citing the administration's consistent opposition to legislated wage hikes.

Marcos keeps core cabinet team, says performance reviews ongoing

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has opted to retain most of his Cabinet members following a recent round of performance evaluations, indicating his intent to preserve stability and continuity as his administration moves into its second half. In a Malacañang press briefing on Tuesday, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced that the President had declined the courtesy resignations of several key officials, ensuring their continued leadership. 'The secretaries whose resignations have been declined need to be announced because there have been many speculations… They have been the victims of intrigues and harassment from many quarters. It's just simple justice to them,' Bersamin stated. Retained cabinet and high-ranking officials: Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. – Secretary, Department of Agriculture Conrado Estrella III – Secretary, Department of Agrarian Reform Juan Edgardo 'Sonny' Angara – Secretary, Department of Education Bienvenido Laguesma – Secretary, Department of Labor and Employment Rex Gatchalian – Secretary, Department of Social Welfare and Development Teodoro 'Ted' Herbosa – Secretary, Department of Health Hans Leo Cacdac – Secretary, Department of Migrant Workers Renato Solidum Jr. – Secretary, Department of Science and Technology Christina Frasco – Secretary, Department of Tourism Henry Aguda – Secretary, Department of Information and Communications Technology Vivencio 'Vince' Dizon – Secretary, Department of Transportation Manuel Bonoan – Secretary, Department of Public Works and Highways Other officials who will remain in post: Romando Artes – Chairman, MMDA Romeo Lumagui Jr. – Commissioner, Bureau of Internal Revenue Bienvenido Rubio – Commissioner, Bureau of Customs Sharon Almanza – Treasurer of the Philippines Elaine Masukat – Secretary, Presidential Management Staff Juan Ponce Enrile – Chief Presidential Legal Counsel 'All of them who have been retained, including myself, are expected to give fresh attention to the mandates and show more performance in our respective areas,' Bersamin said. While most top officials were kept in place, the Palace confirmed the acceptance of resignations from several presidential advisers and assistants: Meynardo Sabili – Chairperson, Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor Terence Calatrava – Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Almarim Tillah – Presidential Assistant on Muslim Affairs Menardo Espineli – Presidential Adviser for Special Concerns (terminated) 'The assessments about them is that they did not perform up to par. Let us assume that the President has good reasons, the best reasons, not to continue with their services at this time,' Bersamin explained. President Marcos also appointed veteran lawyer Atty. Francis Edralin Lim as the new Chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Commission, replacing Emilio Aquino, whose term ends on June 5. Lim previously served as President and CEO of the Philippine Stock Exchange and is known for his expertise in corporate and securities law. Addressing speculation about a sweeping overhaul, Bersamin rejected the notion that the review was a purge. 'If you are asking for blood, there will still be blood… but at least for the major departments, wala hong masyadong movement,' he said. Bersamin emphasized that all officials, including those retained, are still subject to high standards and ongoing performance reviews. 'Even if you have been retained now, you will still be expected to deliver on your marching orders,' he said. The Executive Secretary added that evaluations are ongoing for undersecretaries and heads of government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs), with announcements expected in the coming months. 'The performance evaluation is a continuing process. You can be sure that at any time, anyone who is not performing according to standards of the President will be replaced or relocated.'

DMW celebrates 30 years of honoring OFWs, reaffirms pledge to safeguard rights and opportunities

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) paid tribute to the resilience and dedication of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as it marked the 30th Migrant Workers Day, reaffirming its commitment to enhancing opportunities and protection for OFWs and their families, in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive. During the kick-off ceremony, DMW Officer-in-Charge Undersecretary Bernard P. Olalia emphasized that the celebration is not only a reflection on the past three decades but also a strong affirmation of the agency's continued promise to serve OFWs more efficiently and compassionately. 'This occasion is both a look back on 30 years of service and a renewed commitment to deliver faster, more heartfelt service to every OFW,' Olalia said. The weeklong celebration, leading up to Migrant Workers Day, features a wide array of activities meant to honor OFWs, recognized as modern-day heroes for their critical contributions to the development of both the Philippines and their host countries. Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) Secretary Dante 'Klink' Ang II, the event's guest of honor, highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach in serving overseas Filipinos. He referenced key government efforts such as the Interagency Council Against Trafficking and the Interagency Council on the Rights of Overseas Filipinos as vital to improving safety and services for Filipinos abroad. Ang also acknowledged the bravery of OFWs and introduced Philippine Schools Overseas (PSOs), which serve Filipino communities abroad by promoting diaspora engagement and empowering migrants and their families. The celebration began with the launch of a photo exhibit showcasing 30 years of labor migration milestones, alongside events such as the National Reintegration Network Serbisyo Fair and the Balikbayan Bazaar. Health services, wellness programs, and entertainment activities will be held at the DMW Central Office in Mandaluyong and at all regional and overseas offices throughout the week. Migrant Workers Day, celebrated every June 7 under Republic Act No. 8042, honors the enduring sacrifices and achievements of OFWs. The DMW encourages all OFWs and their families to participate and benefit from the free services and events happening from June 2 to 7.
