According to a spokesperson, the chain now has 89 remaining locations — compared to the start of 2024 when there were triple that, around 270.

'Fridays has a legacy worth celebrating, and we're leaning into that,' Blanchette said.

Local Houston-based restaurant chain files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Over the past few years, many U.S. restaurants have been forced to close their doors or file for bankruptcy. While it was never easy to break into the restaurant business, these days, it seems even more challenging. Many hospitality establishments that weathered the Covid pandemic didn't make it through unscathed. This means already-struggling businesses are now dealing with a new set of challenges: Inflation;High labor costs; Rising food expenses; Aggressive competition; Shifts in consumer behaviors (turning to home-prepared meals instead of eating out). Related: 125-year-old supermarket chain closes over a dozen stores As a result, many famous restaurant chains, and diners have filed for bankruptcy this year. These include Red Lobster, which closed 120 restaurants, TGI Fridays, Fernando's Mexican Cuisine, Bertucci's, Bar Louie, and others. In Texas, the food-service industry is among the biggest private-sector employers, counting more than 57,000 restaurants, generating $137.8 billion in annual sales, and employing more than 1.4 million, according to Texas Restaurant Association. This makes the Lone Star State among the top three states with the largest food-service industries. Despite its scope, the industry in Texas is not immune to the above challenges. Image source: Shutterstock A small, Houston-based restaurant chain, District 7 Grill, has filed for Chapter 11 Subchapter V bankruptcy protection in the Southern District of Texas. District 7 Grill has offered a grill-style dining experience for more than two decades. It has four restaurants across Houston: District 7 Grill - Eado, located at 1508 Hutchins Street;District 7 Grill - Midtown, located at 501 Pierce St;District 7 Grill - Tunnel, located at 1001 Louisiana St;District 7 Grill - Memorial, located at 15377 Memorial Dr. Suite 122. District 7 Grill was known for its fresh take on American-style cuisine, from classic Eggs Benedict and savory Short Rib Burgers to artisan Pizzeria Pizza, fresh Mahi Mahi Salad, and Center Cut Filet Mignon. The restaurant has an average 3.9 out of 5 rating on Yelp, based on 707 reviews. The latest rating is from July 6 of this year, and it praises the establishment. I had the migas and my husband had pancakes and both were good. Sat on the covered patio and there were fans and a nice breeze (it was overcast and not hot this day). Waitstaff (Luke and Sena) was super attentive and so nice! I would recommend!" Despite the good rating and many recommendations, District 7 Grill filed for bankruptcy, reporting assets and liabilities each in the range of $500,000 to $1 million, with 1-49 creditors. An April 2025 CNN article, "America has lost its appetite for casual dining chains," reported the most recent closures at the time, including Hooters, along with recent trends and sales statistics. "They're trying to aim at the average middle consumer," said Associate Professor of Food Marketing Ernest Baskin at Saint Joseph's University. "When consumers start watching their budget, the middle shrinks." For 45% of Texas restaurant operators, high labor costs pose the biggest challenge, according to Touch Bistro. As many as 29% have turned to service charges in an effort to increase revenue, and 44% use TikTok to promote their offerings. Based on the report, some Texas restaurants are experimenting with these "junk fees" to offset shrinking profits. The actual impact of these charges remains to be seen. Another issue restaurants in Texas are facing is the cost of third-party delivery apps, as online ordering becomes more popular statewide. What's next for District 7 Grill? Unlike Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which results in liquidation and final closure, Chapter 11 gives struggling businesses such as District 7 Grill more options. It offers them a second chance to get back on their feet, particularly if they have a decades-long brand value and loyal customer base. Chili's rival closed half its restaurants after Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Sometimes when a relationship is failing, one partner will make every effort to fix whatever they might be doing wrong. On one hand, that's noble, but at some point, you go from being yourself to being an actor. It's one thing to remember to send a text message on days you don't see each other. Your partner might also find it really nice if you occasionally make dinner, take out the trash, do the laundry, or do whatever it is that's not usually on your list. Related: Pepsi shockingly discontinues two big name sodas But if a partner has to change more than half of themselves to fit into a relationship, it's worth questioning whether that relationship was ever meant to be. At some point, if you change enough, you are no longer the same thing. So it's very questionable when a popular restaurant chain proudly admits that after Chapter 11 bankruptcy, it changed over 80% of its menu. Under any circumstances, that's a massive change, and you have to wonder whether it's really the same brand. If McDonald's changed 85% of its menu, it would have to pick between selling chicken McNuggets or hamburgers. That's a really big number, and it makes you question whether some things aren't better off being left to die. After its 2024 Chapter 11 bankruptcy, TGI Fridays emerged with half as many restaurants. You could argue that the chain shut down its weakest locations, but you can also make a case that it does not really have any strong locations. Over the past few years, the Chili's rival has struggled to find an identity. For a while, it offered unlimited apps. That might get people to drink more, but it also calls into question the overall value of the chain's food. Customers can get some of its most famous items, including potato skins and mozzarella sticks, for $10, all you can eat. As the chain that arguably made the potato skin mainstream, that seems like putting a very low value on the product. In theory, consumers will see that as a good price, but they will also question whether that price and the unlimited offer comes with a drop in quality. Related: Another supermarket chain tries new way to fix checkout Unlimited appetizers have become a permanent part of the new TGI Fridays menu. The chain has not kept much from its past, since the new lineup includes over 80% new items. Admittedly, these new offerings are closer to "ribs with a different sauce," rather than the chain all of a sudden selling tofu and other items that are not sports-bar staples. While the chain has less than 100 remaining restaurants in the United States, it has returned longtime CEO Ray Blanchette to that post. He never truly left the chain, as he has owned a handful of franchises himself. That puts him in a good position to understand the needs of franchisees. And while the post-bankruptcy TGI Friday's has touted that its menu is 85% new, that's really semantics. It didn't get rid of mozzarella sticks or burgers or even ribs; it merely reimagined the classics. Yes, the menu has some new dishes, but mostly it has items that improve on its well-loved classics. "Fridays has a legacy worth celebrating, and we're leaning into that. We leveled up the flavor of our mozzarella sticks and nearly the entire menu. Longtime fans will see familiar favorites made better and first guests will get a fresh take on what makes Fridays special," he told So, after bankruptcy, TGI Fridays wants to be itself, but a little bit better. That's actually a reasonable goal for any sort of relationship. Related: Costco's latest price change shocks members Yes, the chain is tweaking 85% of its recipes, but that's very different from having an 85% new menu. If you liked the chain before, arguably, you will like it more now. If you didn't, but like the sports bar genre and that type of food, it might be worth coming in again. TGI Fridays hails ‘comeback' with new menu launch after UK chain rescued

TGI Fridays has hailed a 'comeback' with a new menu and plans to revitalise restaurants after the chain secured a rescue deal last year but made a string of closures. The US-themed restaurant and cocktail bar said it had undergone a significant transformation since being bought out of administration in October. The comeback campaign, which bosses described as a 'full brand reset', will involve half of its dishes updated and 70% of the grill items reworked, incorporating new flavours and more customisation. It also plans to revive the brand's 'Americana' influence and theatre theme – with some locations reintroducing photo booths and candyfloss machines. TGI Fridays said it was launching a comeback offer to mark the relaunch and prompt more diners to come back. Diners who order from the menu across Independence Weekend – the US holiday celebrated between July 4-6 – will receive a voucher for a free return meal, valid on weekdays for the rest of the month. TGI Fridays first opened in New York in 1965 with a party-led theme and continues to operate a string of restaurants in the US. After its previous UK operator fell into administration, 51 restaurants were acquired by private equity firms Breal Capital and Calveton UK. While the deal secured a future for the chain on Britain's high streets, it led to the closure of 35 restaurants, resulting in about 1,000 staff being made redundant. TGI said it now operates 49 restaurants and has about 2,500 members of staff. Restructuring efforts since the takeover have resulted in a leaner and more streamlined business with a significant reduction in overhead costs, it said on Friday. It also highlighted an improvement in sales in recent months, since the start of 2025. Prior to the acquisition, TGI faced falling sales in the UK amid wider struggles for the casual dining sector, which has grappled with weaker consumer spending. Julie McEwan, chief executive of TGI Fridays UK, said: 'This is an exciting moment for TGI Fridays – a full brand reset that reinforces everything people have always loved about us. 'TGI Fridays has a rich heritage of bold flavour, high-energy hospitality and unforgettable celebrations – and we've gone back to those roots to bring that magic into a new era. 'Over the past eight months, we've restructured the business, invested in our incredible team, and rebuilt our offer around quality, value and experience.'
