Anduril secures $30.5 billion valuation in latest fund raise

June 5 (Reuters) - Defense technology startup Anduril Industries has clinched a valuation of $30.5 billion in its latest funding round where it raised $2.5 billion, the company said on Thursday. This round more than doubled the Palmer Luckey-founded company's valuation, from $14 billion last year when it raised $1.5 billion. The development confirms a Reuters report from February, which said Anduril was in talks to raise as much as $2.5 billion, with tech billionaire Peter Thiel's Founders Fund set to lead the round. Anduril said on Thursday that Founders Fund made a $1 billion investment, while all other investors raised their commitments from previous rounds in the Series G fund raise. Founders Fund has backed Anduril since its inception in 2017, and one of the company's co-founders, Trae Stephens, is a partner at the firm. Anduril develops solutions, including a wide range of sensors and drones, and has gained prominence in the industry amid increasing calls for low-cost autonomous defense products. The company has also recently secured a partnership with Palantir Technologies to form a consortium that will look to jointly bid for government contracts as the Pentagon aims to reduce costs.

Supreme Court blocks Mexico's lawsuit against US gunmakers

The United States Supreme Court has blocked a $10 billion lawsuit filed by the Mexican government claiming U.S. firearm manufacturers are responsible for the out-of-control cartel violence and bloodshed that has ravaged the country. The lawsuit was filed in 2021 against 11 companies with Smith & Wesson appealing a lower court decision that had allowed the case to proceed. The unanimous ruling tossed out the case under U.S. laws that largely protect gunmakers from liability when their firearms are used in crime. The court found that Mexico had not shown that the companies had knowingly allowed weapons to be trafficked across the US's southern border. 'It does not pinpoint, as most aiding-and-abetting claims do, any specific criminal transactions that the defendants (allegedly) assisted,' Justice Elena Kagan wrote in the court's opinion. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has yet to comment on the landmark decision about the case, which her government had wanted to proceed under an exception for situations in which the companies themselves are accused of violating the law. Mexico had said the case was still in its early stages and wanted the lawsuit to continue against some of the US's biggest gun companies, including Beretta USA, Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Colt's Manufacturing Co. and Glock Inc. Mexico has strict gun laws and just one store where people can legally buy firearms. But thousands of guns are smuggled in by the country's powerful drug cartels every year. The Mexican government says at least 70% of those weapons come from the United States and claims that companies knew weapons were being sold to traffickers who smuggled them into Mexico and decided to cash in on that market. It has alleged that more than 500,000 guns are smuggled annually from the United States into Mexico and that more than 68 percent are produced by the gun manufacturing companies it sued. Weapons manufactured by the 11 Massachusetts-based gun makers were allegedly used in at least 17,000 homicides in 2019. 'They know how criminals are getting their guns,' Jonathan Lowy, a lawyer for Mexico, argued during virtual hearing in April 2022. 'They could stop and they choose to be willfully blind to the facts. Mexican security forces confiscated a semi-automatic Barrett M82A1 .50 caliber rifle during a raid in July 2022 in Mexico City that led to the arrest of 14 alleged members of Los Chapitos, the Sinaloa Cartel faction that is operated by the sons of notorious drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán. The same rifle abandoned by Jalisco New Generation Cartel members in the failed assassination of Mexico City police chief Omar García Harfuch on June 26, 2020. The companies have rejected Mexico's allegations, arguing the country's lawsuit comes nowhere close to showing they're responsible for a relatively few people using their products to commit violence. A federal judge tossed out the lawsuit under a 2005 law that protects gun companies from most civil lawsuits, but an appeals court revived it. The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston found it fell under an exception to the shield law for situations in which firearm companies are accused of knowingly breaking laws in their business practices. That exception has come up in other cases, including in lawsuits stemming from mass shootings.

Public markets primed for US IPO revival despite tariff uncertainty, NYSE President Martin says

June 5 (Reuters) - Intercontinental Exchange-owned (ICE.N), opens new tab NYSE's President Lynn Martin said on Thursday that public markets were ready for well-prepared companies despite tariff unease as easing volatility was setting the stage for a rebound in U.S. IPO activity. Optimism that 2025 would finally be the year for a strong rebound in U.S. IPO market activity has recently been tempered by tariff-driven uncertainty, but the window seems to be opening up again after volatility eased and equities bounced back. "There's been this narrative in the market, particularly for the last two years. It's a bit false that companies can't go public," Martin said at the Piper Sandler Global Exchange & Trading Conference. The companies debuting at this time were public-market ready, she said, highlighting the successful listings of cybersecurity firm Rubrik (RBRK.N), opens new tab and social media platform Reddit (RDDT.N), opens new tab last year. "They were ready to go. They went, and they've done extraordinarily well," Martin said. Analysts say the IPO market could be in the early stages of a broader pickup, but that sustained stability was needed before the window opens fully. "We expect approximately one or two deals per week in June, ramping up a bit in July after Independence Day, and if all goes well, a full rebound in September, October after the summer lull," said Matt Kennedy, senior strategist at Renaissance Capital, a provider of IPO-focused research and ETFs. The impending launch of the Texas Stock Exchange, backed by Wall Street giants BlackRock (BLK.N), opens new tab and Citadel Securities, is set to heat up the competition in listings markets. The NYSE was following its playbook, talking to its customers about why more of them were moving to Texas, Martin said. NYSE Texas officially opened for business in March and has secured a handful of companies over the past few weeks - including Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT.O), opens new tab - as its "founding" members. "The conversations we're having are incredibly positive," Martin said, adding that NYSE Texas had another double-digit dual listing lined up.
