Channel Nine makes a surprise move to slim down its footy coverage for one big reason - and here's why NRL fans are HAPPY about it
According to Capital Brief, the broadcaster will not televise its post-game shows for the prime-time Saturday night slot for the next three weeks, starting with this weekend's clash between South Sydney and Parramatta.
It comes as Nine revealed in June that the English Premier League will return to free-to-air television in Australia for the first time since 2019.
Ahead of this weekend's opening round of Premier League fixtures, the broadcaster will curtail its coverage of the Rabbitohs clash against the Eels in order to televise Aston Villa 's season opener against Newcastle.
Live coverage of Parramatta's clash against the Souths will finish right after kick-off at 9:25pm, with Nine set to switch straight to events unfolding at Villa Park.
The news has delighted many Aussie sports fans, who had previously required a subscription to watch games on Optus Sport.

Nine's streaming arm Stan Sport had acquired the rights from Optus Sport to stream all 380 Premier League matches for a fee of around $300million in June.
The landmark move, which will continue for multiple seasons, though it is not certain how many free-to-air matches will be shown on Channel Nine.
However, The Daily Telegraph claims that Nine's coverage of the Premier League will not impact this year's finals series.
Some fans have hailed the move, with one writing on X: 'Good. The Premier League is a much better competition.'
'Post-match jibber is pretty boring. I normally turn off after two interviews.'
One added: 'Who really cares if they drop the post-game dribbleathon!'
Some, conversely, added: 'Love NRL, don't love EPL. Love this decision by Channel Nine.'
Reflecting on Nine and Stan's acquisition of the Premier League, Nine chief executive officer Matt Stanton, explained the gravity of the move.

Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out says players may think twice about taking penalties in future after Tottenham's Mathys Tel received online racist abuse. France Under-21 international Tel is the latest player to be targeted on social media after he missed a spot kick in Wednesday night's UEFA Super League penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris St Germain. The Premier League club lost the shoot-out 4-3 after they had surrendered a late 2-0 lead in Italy to draw 2-2 after 90 minutes. Tottenham said they were 'disgusted' by the abuse directed at Tel and Kick It Out claim social media companies are still not doing enough to combat online racism. A Kick It Out statement read: 'If you're a black player, it would be totally understandable to think, 'Why would I want to take a penalty?' That's the state of the game right now, and the sad fact is, it's nothing new. 'Players are routinely targeted with racism online and want action; we want action, too. 'Accountability from offenders and social media companies is a baseline, but it's not being met. 'Football bodies, authorities, and the regulator Ofcom, must come together to accelerate a plan that better protects players. 'Their welfare should always be paramount, and we stand with Mathys Tel and all those who have suffered this continuing, racist abuse.' Rams legend Aaron Donald has gone viral after a clip emerged of the NFL icon practicing helmet-to-helmet collisions with his young son. The Athletic first reported details of the temporary restraining order request. Anwar is further accused of sending packages and balloons to Donald's children, and travelled to Pittsburgh where he was holding a football camp, as she confirmed to Daily Mail on Wednesday. Although Donald claims he's never met Anwar, she nonetheless filed a pair of divorce petitions against him seeking millions of dollars. Donald also received Google Chat messages from his alleged stalker that he took as a threat against his 3-year-old son, according to the temporary restraining order request.
