Billy Joel attempted suicide twice after affair with best friend's wife
In his new documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, the iconic musician recounts a dark chapter of his early life marked by heartbreak, betrayal, and two suicide attempts
Music legend Billy Joel has revealed he attempted suicide twice in his early twenties, following a turbulent affair with a friend's wife that left him in a coma. The revelations are featured in the new documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes , where the 76-year-old speaks candidly about the events that drove him to the brink.
The affair began while Joel was living with his bandmate Jon Small, Jon's wife Elizabeth Weber, and their child. Joel and Weber grew close, with Elizabeth describing their relationship as a 'slow build.' She would later marry Joel, with the couple together from 1973 to 1982.
Joel, who has recently been diagnosed with brain cancer, eventually confessed his feelings to Small. 'I was in love,' he said. The fallout was immediate and painful. 'I felt very, very guilty about it. They had a child. I felt like a homewrecker. I was just in love with a woman and I got punched in the nose which I deserved,' he admitted. 'Jon was very upset. I was very upset.'
The confrontation ended their band, Attila , and destroyed the men's friendship. Weber left, and Joel's mental health deteriorated rapidly. 'I had no place to live. I was sleeping in laundromats and I was depressed I think to the point of almost being psychotic,' he said. 'So I figured, 'That's it. I don't want to live anymore.''
Joel's sister, Judy Molinari, who was working as a medical assistant at the time, had given him sleeping pills to help him rest. 'But Billy decided that he was going to take all of them… he was in a coma for days and days and days,' she recalled tearfully. 'I went to go see him in the hospital, and he was laying there white as a sheet. I thought that I'd killed him.'
Even after recovering, Joel considered another attempt. He drank a bottle of lemon Pledge and was rushed to the hospital by Small. 'Even though our friendship was blowing up, Jon saved my life,' Joel reflected.
Small later forgave him. 'The only practical answer I can give as to why Billy took it so hard was because he loved me that much and that it killed him to hurt me that much,' he said.
Following his second suicide attempt, Joel checked himself into a psychiatric observation ward. The experience, he said, reshaped his life. 'I got out… and I thought to myself, you can utilise all those emotions to channel that stuff into music.'
Joel would go on to become one of the best-selling artists of all time but his pain would ultimately become the source of his greatest art. His biggest hits include Piano Man, New York State of Mind, and Just The Way You Are.

Major Hollyoaks exit confirmed as huge star quits after 9 years
Rory Douglas-Speed is set to leave after nine years as Joel Dexter (Picture: Lime Pictures) Rory Douglas-Speed has quit Hollyoaks after nine years. The popular star, who plays Joel Dexter, has wrapped filming, with his final scenes believed to have already hit screens. Joel, as viewers know, was last seen in a prison cell following his arrest for the murder of Tommy Odenkirk (Brandon Fellows). The former priest discovered that Tommy, who masqueraded as a therapist, was responsible for leaking a video of Leela Dexter's (Kirsty-Leigh Porter) rape ordeal online. What's more, he manipulated Joel into thinking that he'd murdered his brother Billy, which he then used as leverage to try and build a relationship with him. Joel found out that truth and, being spurred on by Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield) – who Tommy also had leverage over – he decided to take action. An altercation ensued and the following morning Joel woke to find Tommy dead on the floor beside him. Joel was jailed after he confessed to murdering Tommy (Picture: Lime Pictures) At first, he contemplated covering his tracks but ultimately he decided it was for the best to report himself to the police. Joel was subsequently seen in a police cell speaking with DI Banks (Drew Cain) following his arrest. According to The Sun, this showdown will serve as Rory's final scene as Joel, bringing to an end a nine year stint on the show. 'It was a tough decision for him to make to leave, but it's right for the character and for Rory himself,' a source told the publication. 'He's loved the last nine years and all that has come with Hollyoaks, but he really wants to spread his wings. Follow Metro Soaps on WhatsApp and get all the latest spoilers first! Bosses were very kind and the door has been left open for Joel to return one day so it's not goodbye by any means.' Rory has been one of Hollyoaks' biggest stars of the past decade, taking over the role of Joel from previous star Andrew Still, who went on to play Daisy's stalker Justin in Coronation Street. With Rory in the role, Joel featured in numerous long-running stories, which allowed for the star to deliver powerhouse performances aplenty. This past year in particular has been one of his strongest to date, with Joel's characterisation arguably at an all-time high since the Channel 4 soap's historic time jump. The devastating death of baby Noah and his much-loved relationship with Leela spring to mind as stories that truly left an impact on audiences. It's safe to say that Rory always understood the assignment and he will certainly be missed! Vicki takes action to keep EastEnders abuser Joel out of jail after assault
Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) makes it her mission to protect Joel Marshall (Max Murray) after his commits another sex offence in EastEnders next week. As viewers of the BBC One soap have seen, Joel is deeply troubled, and is the reason his family were forced to flee from Australia. After upskirting a school mate, his dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) coughed up a whopping $50,000 to keep the girl's silence, but her family also demanded that they leave the country. Since settling in Walford, it seems that his behaviour hasn't changed. Not only has he introduced naïve Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) to pornography, but he also decided to record sexual content of his own. Growing closer to Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James), he secretly filmed them having sex – a video which a horrified Ross later discovered on his son's phone. In upcoming scenes, his behaviour worsens, despite demands from both Ross and Vicki for him to change his ways. Having spent the day with Tommy, the lads board an underground train and Joel decides to entwine him further into a web of misbehaviour. He pulls out his phone, and instructs Tommy to start recording. Stumbling through the carriage, he pretends to fall on a fellow passenger named Isla, who he goes onto touch inappropriately. Tommy is stunned by what he sees, as a terrified Isla rushes to report him to the police that are present in the tube station. Joel is apprehended and hauled in for questioning – just as Ross and Vicki witness what is happening. Down at the cop shop, Ross demands answers from the teen, as Vicki corners Isla and tries to comfort her. Vicki is supportive of the girl's decision to report Joel, and hopes that it will be the kick he needs to stop his alarming behaviour patterns. She then passes on her number in case she needs anything further from the family. Later that night, she comes up with a cunning plan, inspired by Ross' actions Down Under. More Trending Tommy's mum Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) has her own concerns about Joel's influence over her son, but it soon becomes clear that Vicki is the one who she should be worried about. When Joel makes attempts at reconciling with his mate, Tommy is left shaken by an ultimatum from Vicki. She warns that unless he keeps his mouth shut, she will implicate him in the crime. EastEnders stars tease Joel's downfall as 'trouble' ahead in 'big' new storyline
EastEnders cast members Shane Richie and Sophie Khan Levy have both hinted there could be twists and turns when teenager Joel Marshall's sickening actions are exposed There could be a downfall set for EastEnders teen Joel Marshall, who has been at the centre of some dark scenes recently. The son of Ross Marshall only arrived weeks ago, but he's already targeted one teenage girl with a sex tape filmed without her consent, while it was also revealed something happened with a girl while he was living in Australia. It was said to involve an inappropriate image, and it led to Joel having to flee while he also owed someone money in a bid to pay the girl's family off. It was clear Joel had not changed though, recently isolating Avani Nandra-Hart from her friends before sleeping with her, only to record her without telling her. He showed the video to pal Tommy Moon, while Avani has been trolled over sleeping with Joel - but the video is yet to emerge. Amid this, Joel has been leading Tommy astray, and recent scenes saw the latter being introduced to pornography by the bad influence. Joel appears to have some worrying views and thoughts about girls, with fans fearing what's ahead for the character and Tommy amid a shocking assault in upcoming scenes. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, two stars somewhat involved in the ongoing storyline have teased "trouble" on the way and a "big storyline" ahead. There's also hints of what could happen if Avani's parents find out about the sickening video, with a revenge teased. READ MORE: Coronation Street star speaks out over major show change and teases 'exciting' twists Actress Sophie Khan Levy who plays Avani's mother Priya on the BBC hope hinted that if the truth does get revealed, Priya and ex Ravi may take revenge on Joel, suggesting they'd go "crazy" at the teen. Meanwhile, Shane Richie, who plays Tommy's father Alfie Moon, has also promised more drama ahead. He addressed a huge storyline on the way that was just about to kick off, and hinted it could be linked to Tommy and Joel. While he didn't confirm this, the timings would certainly match up. Shane said: "There is more trouble ahead and while I was away there was a lot filmed. Sonny who plays Tommy texted me saying, 'Shane, I'm doing this and that'. It's great. It's big stuff." As for Sophie, she spilled on Ravi and Priya's likely reaction: "I really don't know. I think I can imagine them two going crazy. After what she was like with Jack Branning... that was an awful moment for Avani. "Priya and Ravi are both quick to get angry so who knows what Joel will face when they find out. We'll have to see!" Shane also teased big scenes ahead as he addressed Ben Wadey replacing Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw. He shared with us: "There have been a lot of positive changes and everyone's really embracing it. Everyone worries when you change Executive Producer but the handover has been brilliant. Chris and Ben are such big fans of the show and that's important. "Ben has already told me what is ahead. There's a lot of fireworks, there always are. There's a story that's about to kick in which will carry on through til after Christmas, an it's a big story. You thought the 40th was big, wait until you see this story that's all I'm saying."
