Vadodara bridge collapse: Gujarat govt disburses Rs 62 lakh assistance to victims
Gujarat Chief Minister had announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured, while ordering a high-level inquiry into the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge collapse last week, resulting in the death of over a dozen people.
As per a government statement, Rs 62 lakh financial assistance was distributed to the families of victims till Sunday.
Chhotaudepur MP Jashubhai Rathwa and Padra MLA Chaitanya Singh Jhala distributed the cheques of financial assistance on Sunday. While meeting the affected families, the elected representatives also shared their grief over the accident and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
The administrative officials were also present on the occasion to assist in cheque distribution to the kin of those devastated by the sudden bridge collapse.
As per the details, cheques worth a total of Rs 62 lakh have been distributed till Sunday, which includes the families of four injured and 15 deceased.
The incident occurred on July 9 at around 7:30 a.m. when the Gambhira bridge, spanning the Mahisagar River near Mujpur village. A portion of the bridge suddenly collapsed and fell into the Mahisagar River below.
The bridge served as a crucial link between the Vadodara and Anand districts, connecting Central Gujarat to the Saurashtra region.
Expressing sorrow over the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced Rs 2 lakh as ex gratia for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured, from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

In months leading to the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, Maharashtra's Tribal Development department had approved road works worth Rs 9,300 crore against the approved budget of merely Rs 2,830 crore. As per the data accessed by The Indian Express, the government has dues pending Rs 10,100 crore for the works undertaken in the past three years. The finance minister has directed to avoid taking up the new projects and focus on paying up the dues. Directions have also been given to review the works which were given administrative approval but could not be started for over a year. The Tribal Affairs department of the state government undertake road works in tribal areas (budget head 5054 5117). Since the year 2022-23 to 2024-25, works worth Rs 13,016 crore were approved against the approved budget of just Rs 3,230 crore. As per the data, in December 2023 (leading up to Lok Sabha 2024 polls) woks worth Rs 4,500 crore and in July 2024 (leading up to Assembly 2024 polls) works worth Rs 4,800 crore were approved, which amounts to a total of 70 per cent of the total works in the past three years. Prior to December 2023, the total amount of administrative approval for the year 2023-24 was Rs 2,900 crore only. As per the data, works worth Rs 700 crore were given administrative approval in the year 2022-23 against the budget of Rs 400 crore. On Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar held a review of the financial situation of the department. 'The total pendency of the dues is around Rs 10,000 crore for last three years. The minister has directed us to ensure that dues are paid and there will be no new projects,' said an official who attended the meeting. Pawar has also asked to take the review of the pending road works for more than a year. 'There are works which did not start for more than a year despite administrative approval. Directions have been given that those works will be cancelled,' said the official. The associations of Maharashtra's contractors and engineers have been demanding their dues from the government since last year. In February they wrote a letter to state government's top leadership warning to stop all ongoing infrastructure works as payments worth Rs 89,000 crore from different departments have allegedly not been paid since July 2024. Despite stopping the works in phase-wise manner across the state, the contractors have yet not been paid. Among the alleged Rs 89,000 crore dues of the contractors include Rs 46,000 crore from the Public Works Department (PWD), Rs 18,000 crore from the Jal Jeevan Mission under Water Supply and Sanitation department, Rs 8,600 crore from the rural development department, Rs 19,700 crore from the irrigation department and Rs 1,700 crore from the works done under DPDC, MLA fund and MP fund.

ED attaches over Rs 200-crore assets in Goa land scam
New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday said it has attached properties worth more than Rs 200 crore located in prime locations of Goa as part of a money laundering investigation linked to a land 'scam' involving a man who unsuccessfully contested the 2022 assembly polls. A provisional order was issued on July 28 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to attach the properties. They are worth Rs 212.85 crore, the federal probe agency said. 'The probe pertains to a conspiracy of land grabbing and forgery perpetrated by an organised criminal syndicate led by Rohan Harmalkar and his accomplices," it said in a statement. Harmalkar was arrested by the ED in June and he is currently lodged in jail under judicial custody. He had contested the 2022 assembly polls but lost. The ED case stems from two FIRs registered by the Goa Police against Harmalkar and others on charges of forgery, cheating, impersonation, and use of counterfeit documents to fraudulently acquire land parcels in North Goa. The ED alleged that Harmalkar, in active conspiracy with Alcantro D'Souza and others, orchestrated a meticulously planned 'criminal enterprise" to misappropriate multiple high-value properties loacted in Anjuna, Revora, Nadora, Camurlim, Parra, and other adjoining areas falling within Bardez Taluka and Mapusa City. Investigation found, it claimed, use of forged genealogical records, fabricated sale deeds, counterfeit wills, manipulated inventory proceedings and other fraudulent documents by the accused, to falsely claim title over valuable immovable properties and to camouflage the same as legitimately held assets. A part of the alleged proceeds of crime were received 'directly" by Harmalkar, D'Souza and others and subsequently routed through accounts of their family members and associates, the agency said. The 'illicit" gains so acquired were routed through bank accounts of the key conspirators and their family members, thereby layering and integrating the tainted funds to project them as untainted, it added. The agency said it was making efforts to trace and attach more assets, which may be substantially higher in value, in order to fully unravel the extent of the laundering operation. He assured the seventh-oldest legal institution in the country, which has produced at least two chief justices of the apex court, as well as a galaxy of legal luminaries over the years, that it would be provided with all sorts of help at the state govt level. He also assured the Patna University vice-chancellor that he would fulfill his dream project of developing PU's second campus at Saidpur at an estimated cost of Rs 700 crore. "Efforts should be made to ensure the institution's accreditation by NAAC with 'A' grade," he said. Law College principal Yogendra Kumar Verma, in his welcome address, drew the attention of the minister towards the constraints plaguing the proper development of the college and requested him to use his good offices in sanctioning a building construction grant worth Rs 92 crore from the govt. PU vice-chancellor Ajay Kumar Singh and Patliputra University vice-chancellor Upendra Prasad Singh also addressed the students on the occasion. Law College teacher Salem Jawed proposed a vote of thanks.
