Danilo bags unique Rangers hat-trick as Kieran Dowell dazzles to prove Martin claim is bang on the money

Daily Record16-07-2025
The pair have struggled to impress during their time at Ibrox but have been shining lights in pre season
A new manager always brings fresh hope for players who struggled to impress under the previous regime.

And that is the case at Rangers this summer with not only a new boss in Russell Martin but a new era at the club under the 49ers ownership.

It's a clean slate under Martin and while it can always be dangerous to read too much into pre-season, the early signs have been good for at least a couple of players.

Much of the Ibrox side's work this summer has been done away from the eyes of the public with only one friendly so far against Club Brugge offering a glimpse of life under Martin.
It was a game of two halves as the Light Blues recovered from going a couple of goals down against the Belgians to salvage a draw thanks to goals from Mohamed Diomande and Finlday Curtis.
Apart from that, it's been closed door games - a 1-0 defeat to Welsh minnows The New Saints and a draw against Barnsley at their St George's Park training camp.
Danilo was the man on target against the Tykes and the Brazilian shone on the latest runout as Martin built up to that huge Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos.
The 26-year-old former Feyenoord man's time at Ibrox has ben plagued by injuries but impressed yet again as Neil Lennon took his Dunfermline side to the Rangers Training Centre for a bounce game.

Danilo was on the scoresheet again and assisted three times for Nico Raskin, Kieran Dowell and new boy Thelo Aasgaard.
With the futures of both Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane both in doubt and sitting out pre-season so far, a fit-again and firing Danilo could be the man who Martin pins his hopes on for Champions League progress.
Danilo's talent hasn't been doubted by Rangers fans, it's his injury record which has left them with questions.

However, the same probably can't be said of Dowell and it would be a major turnaround if he was to be handed a key role under Martin.
The midfielder was previously out of favour and shipped out on loan to Birmingham last season, with a permanent move expected this summer.
Martin has named the former Everton and Norwich City man in his 'senior' group alongside captain James Tavernier, John Souttar and Jack Butland.
Dowell was a standout at St Andrews last season and Michael Beale spoke highly of the player when he landed him on a free two summers ago.
He said: "I watched him come through at Everton, playing for all the England age groups. Played 15 or 16 times for England under-21s.
"He's played in the Premier League for Norwich, who have had a few changes of coach in his time there. He comes in as a player that knows three or four in our dressing room that he's played with. He's a player I like a lot.'
But he made just 17 appearances in his first season, with Beale axed early on and then he moved to the Midlands last January. Still only 27, could Dowell now prove his worth at Rangers?

Arsenal transfer news: Eberechi Eze, Rodrygo, Ollie Watkins and more

Arsenal are setting in motion the first steps of a productive summer as they look to buck their trend of second-place finishes next term. It was once again a case of close but not close enough for Mikel Arteta 's side in 2024/25. Finishing second fiddle to the Premier League champions for a third successive season, the Gunners endured another trophyless campaign after their Champions League push fell at the hands of eventual winners PSG. A key reason for their failure to achieve was an attacking injury crisis that forced Mikel Merino to take up a role of makeshift number nine, and despite their undeniable quality in the starting XI, Arsenal's depth is far from good enough for a team hopeful of major titles. And with numerous players already on the chopping block, Arteta has promised a 'big' summer of recruitment at the Emirates. With the transfer window having re-opened on 16 June, a striker was top of the club's shopping list, and they've finally got their man after completing a move for Viktor Gyokeres. Elsewhere, deals for midfielders and defenders are being pursued, with Noni Madueke putting pen to paper and Eberechi Eze being considered. New sporting director Andrea Berta is leading the club's transfer dealings, and Arsenal will be hoping he can replicate his Atleti exploits in London as Arteta looks to lead the club back to the Premier League pinnacle for the first time since 2006. Arrivals & areas to improve The obvious priority for Arsenal will be to sign at least one world class striker. Gabriel Jesus is sidelined with a serious injury that could keep him out until midway through next season, and while the returning Kai Havertz remains one of Arteta's favoured players, there is a strong desire to add an out-and-out proven goalscorer to the ranks, hence the arrival of Gyokeres. The Gunners have added a top-class midfielder as they completed a deal for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi, with the 26-year-old Spaniard joining for around £60m a year after apparently rejecting the advances of Liverpool. In addition, Christian Norgaard joins from Brentford as a defensive cover option, while they could yet add Eze as a more attacking choice. Inconsistency on the Gabriel Martinelli front means that a winger has been targeted, with Noni Madueke bringing healthy competition for the Brazilian (if not replacing him entirely). Elsewhere, cover has been secured in defence - with the Gunners having signed Valencia's Cristhian Mosquera – while a backup goalkeeper for David Raya has been acquired with the arrival of Kepa Arrizabalaga. Done deals Ins: Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad, £60m), Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting CP, £55m), Noni Madueke (Chelsea, £48.5m), Cristhian Mosquera (Valencia, £13m) Christian Norgaard (Brentford, £10m), Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea, £5m) Outs: Nuno Tavares (Lazio, £7m), Marquinhos (Cruzeiro £2.5m), Jorginho (Flamengo, free transfer), Kieran Tierney (Celtic, free transfer), Takehiro Tomiyasu (leaves as free agent), Thomas Partey (leaves as free agent) Potential targets Eberechi Eze, Crystal Palace Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze has emerged as a midfield target for the Gunners, with Mikel Arteta likely valuing the England international's ability to play in several attacking positions. Eze impressed for Palace last season and scored the winner in the Eagles' memorable FA Cup final triumph, with a goal that perfectly illustrated his ability in the final third. Reports suggest the 27-year-old is undeterred by the imminent arrival of Noni Madueke, and Arsenal are said to be hoping to agree a deal below his £68m release clause. Benjamin Sesko, RB Leipzig While a deal for Gyokeres has been completed, Arsenal could well turn their attentions back to RB Leipzig sharpshooter Benjamin Sesko if they feel further depth is required up top. The 22-year-old has a penchant for ripping the net off and Arteta reportedly sanctioned talks with the Slovenian, with the German club apparently looking for between £65m and £85m. Rodrygo, Real Madrid On the wing, Arsenal could look to provide further reinforcements in the form of Real Madrid star Rodrygo. The Brazil international appears to be heading for the Santiago Bernabeu exit door this summer after being used sparingly at the Club World Cup. Premier League rivals Liverpool are also said to be interested. Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa A man perpetually linked with the Gunners, you can never write off a move to the Emirates for Ollie Watkins. The Aston Villa talisman has long been admired by Mikel Arteta and could be sought as Arsenal look to prevent last year's failure to adequately stack their attacking options from repeating itself.

Liverpool already have Luis Diaz replacement which explains Alexander Isak transfer plan

Liverpool have agreed a £65.5million deal with Bayern Munich to sell Luis Diaz and the winger's departure is expected to fund a bid for Newcastle star Alexander Isak When Luis Diaz arrived at Liverpool in January 2022, his smile lit up the training ground. Then-boss Jurgen Klopp admitted he hadn't seen anyone enjoy training as much as the Colombian did. ‌ Having moved sooner than expected to land him from Porto because Tottenham were sniffing, the Reds got a new weapon in a campaign they were fighting for four trophies in. Diaz was a big part in their League and FA Cup successes while they missed out on the Premier League by a point to Manchester City and suffered Champions League heartache against Real Madrid in Paris. ‌ But it was how quickly he settled which surprised most. Then captain Jordan Henderson even remarked how soon he found his, quite fast, feet at the club. With 41 goals and 16 assists in 148 games as well as a Premier League title and another League Cup to the previously mentioned trophies, Diaz has undoubtedly been a successful buy for £37.5million. ‌ Now he is heading for the exit door, he will need to be replaced. But has he already? Diaz under Arne Slot has been more versatile than the left winger under Klopp. When Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez were unavailable last season, he would be used through the middle. Slot wants a front line that can move about. He often frustrated with end product sometimes a problem but he could be lethal as he showed with a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in November and a brace against Manchester United at Old Trafford in September. Now Liverpool have already agreed a £79m deal to bring in Hugo Ekitike and he is finding his feet on the summer tour out in Asia, which Diaz has just departed. It should be noted that Liverpool believe the France under-21 striker has the ability to play in more places than one in the front three. Ekitike is not Nunez's replacement for when he expectedly departs later this summer. Ekitike is the versatile forward to replace Diaz it seems. That is why Liverpool remain on red alert when it comes to Alexander Isak. Because the Sweden hitman is the man they want as their new No.9 when Nunez leaves. Now should Newcastle fail to budge on their stance that he's not for sale, Liverpool are happy with Ekitike through the middle. Of course, they also have Cody Gakpo on the left and teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha, even at just 16, is starting to push. ‌ Yet if they could land Isak in the coming weeks, even if it will take a British transfer record offer and the Magpies relenting, Slot will believe he will have a much more fluid forward line as well as a lethal one. They know Ekitike is a forward of promise while Isak is a striker who has proven himself in the Premier League. Yet interchanging them while having options on the left and right (many believe Jeremie Frimpong is more back-up to Mo Salah than a threat to Conor Bradley at right-back), the Reds are building a new-look front line that is more flexible than the previous one. ‌ Why are Liverpool sanctioning Diaz's sale is another question when he too can be flexible in his positioning? Well, it became clear to them 12 months ago that Colombian, although still smiling brightly, was having his head turned. They tried on two occasions to secure him under a new contract but the differences in salary demands and expectations were too much. Liverpool wanted to stand strong this season. Earlier in the summer, their stance was Diaz was not for sale but Bayern Munich have proven that everyone is for sale for the right price with their £65.1m bid being accepted. The Reds will be hoping Newcastle's stance changes in a similar fashion. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Star Wrexham let go who wanted to stay makes statement that Ryan Reynolds will love

Veteran striker Steven Fletcher has praised Wrexham after being released from the club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, calling it his most enjoyable football experience Veteran striker Steven Fletcher was forced to leave Wrexham despite wanting to prolong his career in Wales – but he has still spoken glowingly about his time at the club. The former Premier League goalscorer was let go at the end of last season after playing a key role in two of the Welsh side's three successive promotions. ‌ The 38-year-old scored eight goals in 40 League One appearances last term, many of them from the bench, as the Red Dragons secured automatic promotion. ‌ However, the former Scotland international was deemed surplus to requirements by manager Phil Parkinson as Wrexham began their preparations for life in the Championship. ‌ Fletcher, who played in the Premier League with Burnley, Wolves and Sunderland earlier in his career, said in a post on Instagram in May that he was departing "with a heavy heart" and "not by choice". But despite his disappointment, he has spoken warmly about his two-year spell at Wrexham and the positive environment at the club in words which will be music to the ears of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Speaking on the Golf Life YouTube channel, Fletcher said: "There's something about it, the town, the club, the fans and the staff. There's just a massive togetherness. I've been in football for 20-odd years and it's the most I've enjoyed my football. "I've played in the Premier League, I've played at the highest levels, and no disrespect to the clubs I've been at, but in that moment I really enjoyed my football." Fletcher is now mulling over his next move and admitted he is "95 per cent sure" that his football career is over. He said his plans to retire come despite some of his old teammates encouraging him to keep going. ‌ He added: "I'm 95 per cent sure that I'm done. When you say it out loud, you get a weird feeling. There's a bit inside of me that wants to finish on a high and I don't want to go chasing something that I'm not going to find." Fletcher's efforts for Wrexham were clearly appreciated by the club's owners. Reacting to him being released on social media, Reynolds said he would miss his "leadership and wit". Addressing Fletcher directly, Reynolds said: "Words aren't agile enough to capture what you've brought to Wrexham, the sport, and the lives of myself and this whole town. You aren't a PART of greatness. You ARE greatness. ‌ "I don't really know what a co-chairmen is supposed to do or say in these moments and I don't much care. I'm gonna miss you. I'll miss your your leadership and wit and the way you remind everyone - including me - that this is also FUN. Like the first day we met, I'm here for you any time and any place. Always." McElhenney later opened up about how difficult he found saying goodbye to Fletcher while appearing on the podcast. It came after the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor revealed enjoyed a round with golf with Fletcher in the US shortly before he was released. ‌ "Even just bringing up his [Steven Fletcher's] name is difficult because the brutal reality of football it just reminds me of how quickly you can go from spending all day with him here in Los Angeles promoting the show and playing golf," he said. "[Then] putting him on a plane, sending him home and within 24 hours, Phil released him from the club, and that was difficult."
