Hamburg return to the Bundesliga after seven years with 6-1 demolition of Ulm
HAMBURG, Germany - Six-time German champions Hamburg SV earned a triumphant promotion back to the Bundesliga after a seven-year absence, with Saturday's 6-1 demolition of Ulm guaranteeing them a top two finish in the second division with a game left to play.
The 1983 European Cup winners, once nicknamed the Bundesliga 'dinosaurs' for having been in the top division for the longest uninterrupted spell since the league's creation in 1963, suffered a shock first ever relegation in 2018.
They then repeatedly missed chances to go back up, losing key matches in the final stretches of previous seasons, but they would not be denied promotion this time.
Ulm stunned the hosts with a seventh minute lead through Tom Gaal but Hamburg bounced back just three minutes later to level with Ludovit Reis.
Ulm then saw Semir Telalovic' 36th minute penalty saved by Hamburg keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes before the hosts struck twice late in the first half through Ransford-Yeboah Koenigsdoerffer's superb chip and Davie Selke's 22nd league goal to earn a commanding lead.
They picked up where they left off and made it 4-1 thanks to Philipp Strompf's own goal in the 49th before Koenigsdoerffer bagged his second with a solo effort and low drive from the edge of the box. Daniel Efadli made it half a dozen in the 86th as fans gathered around the pitch to storm it on the final whistle.
With one game remaining, Hamburg are top on 59 points, with Cologne second on 58 and Elversberg third on 55.
The third-placed team goes into a promotion/relegation playoff with the 16th team of the Bundesliga. Ulm are relegated to the third division. REUTERS

Bayern teenager Karl hungry for more playing time after fine pre-season form

BERLIN -Bayern Munich teenager Lennart Karl is eager for more first-team playing time this season, the 17-year-old said, following impressive performances in pre-season friendlies in the past days. The attacking midfielder scored in Bayern's friendly wins over Tottenham Hotspur last week and against Grasshopper Zurich on Tuesday where he also set up another goal, as the Bavarians prepare for Saturday's German Supercup against VfB Stuttgart. "Now I also want to get playing time in the bigger games, for example, the Supercup or the Bundesliga," Karl said after Tuesday's win over Zurich. "I am working very hard towards that and I hope it works out. I want to lead the way as a youth player, show my strengths, and continue to develop. "The games are completely different compared to the youth team. Coming to training every day, playing with the best from all over the world — of course the intensity is very high, but yes, I can definitely keep up." Bayern fans have been delighted with Karl's development, with only a few youth players making the jump to the senior team in recent years, and after also seeing talisman Thomas Mueller -- who had come through the Bayern youth system -- leave the club after 25 years without being offered a new contract. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany has also been criticised by some Bayern fans for not doing enough to integrate more academy-grown younger players into the senior team. The Bundesliga season kicks off next week with Bayern hosting RB Leipzig on Friday, August 22. REUTERS

Newcastle sign German defender Thiaw from Milan

Financial details were not disclosed but British media reports said Newcastle paid a transfer fee worth around 34.6 million pounds ($46.69 million) for the 24-year-old. Thiaw was a key part of Milan's defensive line-up last season, making 31 appearances across all competitions, but featured less frequently towards the end of their Serie A campaign as they suffered a disappointing eighth-placed finish. He has also played three times for Germany, with all three of those appearances coming in 2023. "We're really pleased to have Malick on board. He's a player I've admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options," Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said in a statement. Thiaw is Newcastle's third signing of the summer transfer window, after winger Anthony Elanga's arrival from Nottingham Forest and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale's signing on loan from Southampton. Newcastle, who finished fifth last season to secure a spot in the Champions League, begin their Premier League campaign with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday. REUTERS

The 29-year-old centre-back came on for Mats Hummels after 18 minutes but was taken off at halftime in the 2-1 loss, having suffered the problem without the involvement of another player. Suele will miss this week's German Cup first-round tie at Essen and the first part of the Bundesliga season, with Dortmund kicking off their league campaign at St Pauli on August 23. The Ruhr valley club, who finished fourth last season, will also compete in the Champions League league phase. REUTERS
