BERLIN -Borussia Dortmund defender Niklas Suele will be sidelined for about two months after picking up a calf muscle injury in Sunday's pre-season friendly against Juventus, the Bundesliga club said on Monday.
The 29-year-old centre-back came on for Mats Hummels after 18 minutes but was taken off at halftime in the 2-1 loss, having suffered the problem without the involvement of another player.
Suele will miss this week's German Cup first-round tie at Essen and the first part of the Bundesliga season, with Dortmund kicking off their league campaign at St Pauli on August 23.
The Ruhr valley club, who finished fourth last season, will also compete in the Champions League league phase. REUTERS

Everton sign Grealish on season-long loan

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LIVERPOOL, England - England midfielder Jack Grealish joined Everton on a season-long loan from Manchester City on Tuesday in a bid to revive his international career. The deal was announced by both clubs. City paid Aston Villa 100 million pounds ($135.08 million) for the player, now 29, in 2021 but he fell out of favour with manager Pep Guardiola and is seeking game time ahead of next year's World Cup. Media reports said Everton, who finished last season 13th overall and are managed by David Moyes, had an option to make the move permanent for 50 million pounds at the end of the loan period. Grealish's current weekly wages have been put at 300,000 pounds. Everton said Grealish would wear the number 18, the same number worn by past club greats Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney. "I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton. It's massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans," the player said in a statement. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Grealish, who had a medical on Monday and was at Everton's training ground on Tuesday, made only seven league starts last season and was not included in City's recent Club World Cup squad. He was also omitted from England's 2024 European Championship squad and has spoken of his determination to get back in the reckoning under Thomas Tuchel and add to his 39 senior caps. "I think we're getting him at a good time because he's experienced, he understands the Premier League, and we're all fully aware of the levels he's capable of performing to," said Moyes. "I know Jack's ambition is to get back into the England squad so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season." Grealish scored 17 goals for City in 157 appearances and was involved in three Premier League title triumphs as well as winning the 2023 Champions League, FA Cup and Club World Cup. He is Everton's sixth and biggest signing of the summer with the Liverpool club ready to start afresh at a new 52,769 seat stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. REUTERS

Emma Raducanu pauses Cincinnati match over crying child

CINCINNATI - The disturbance caused by a crying child in the stands proved too much to handle for Emma Raducanu during her Cincinnati Open defeat by Aryna Sabalenka on Aug 11 when the Briton appealed to a bemused chair umpire for action. Raducanu was preparing to serve at 3-4 in the tense third set of her 7-6(3) 4-6 7-6(5) defeat when she stopped and looked at the official to say that the child had been wailing for 10 minutes straight. 'It's a child, do you want me to send the child out of the stadium?' the chair umpire asked almost in disbelief, prompting Raducanu to merely shrug. Raducanu then smiled and pointed to the stands as several members of the crowd said 'yes' on her behalf having heard the chair umpire's question. The official said she could ask staff to have the baby removed, but added: 'We need to continue for the moment,' before the action resumed. Raducanu went on to win the game and draw level at 4-4 but eventually fell to world number one Sabalenka, who will take on Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the last 16. REUTERS

REUTERS/Jorge Adorno/File Photo South American soccer governing body CONMEBOL on Tuesday announced a system to detect racism, hate speech and abuse on social media directed at players, referees, clubs and others with the aim of taking action against the perpetrators. The system will be used starting with the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana continental club competitions, both of which begin later on Tuesday. CONMEBOL said the system, implemented in partnership with Signify Group, allows "threats to be identified in real time, abusive behaviour to be deterred and concrete action to be taken against those responsible." Actions against perpetrators may include account suspension, stadium access restrictions and reports to relevant authorities, CONMEBOL added. REUTERS
