Wait for Vatican white smoke fires up social media
PARIS: Hype has been building on social media around the Catholic Church's secretive, centuries-old tradition of conclaves to elect a new pope, animating users from the White House on down.
US President Donald Trump on May 3 posted an apparently AI-generated image of himself wearing papal vestments and sitting on a throne, one finger directed to the heavens.
The striking picture was the most notorious among thousands that have bubbled up since the death of Pope Francis on April 21 and ahead of the cardinals' gathering from Wednesday.
More than 1.3 million tweets have been published on X about the conclave, according to monitoring platform Visibrain, while TikTok videos on the topic have been viewed over 363 million times on the network with unparallelled reach among the young.
Particularly passionate pope-watchers can fire up online game Mantapa to pick their favourite cardinals and make predictions for the next pontiff in a style similar to sports betting.
Pomp and secrecy
The mystery, pomp and ritual around the conclave – from the opulent Sistine Chapel surroundings to the ethereal black or white smoke signalling ballot results – "lends itself to the narrative formats of social networks", said Refka Payssan, a researcher in information and communication sciences.
"A conclave means both gilt, protocol, ceremony, but also secrecy and mystery" cannily nurtured by the Vatican, agreed Stephanie Laporte, founder of digital strategy consultancy OTTA.
"Young people love to speculate" about outcomes, Laporte added.
"Everyone on social networks has an opinion and everyone wants to decode the news, look for clues, know which cardinal will become the pope. It's almost like an 'escape game'," she suggested.
Payssan noted that the conclave fires up the "curiosity of seeing history happen live", marking a rare event – the first in 12 years – with potential global consequences.
Even if not Catholic themselves, "young people are very conscious of the pope's influence on hundreds of millions, even billions of people, whether it's in his stance on contraception or the environment," Laporte said.
Digital turn
Conclave fever is also a reflection of the Vatican's successful turn to digital communications in recent years to build bonds with younger generations.
Created by Benedict XVI in 2012 but mostly used by Francis, the papal X account @pontifex reaches 50 million followers across its nine languages.
And Francis's own Instagram account had more than 10 million followers.
The Church has backed many cardinals' own ventures into the digital realm, with some becoming bona fide Internet stars.
New York prelate Timothy Dolan has been publishing videos about the run-up to the conclave to his almost 300,000 X followers and 55,000 on Instagram – without giving away any sensitive information.
Moderate Philippine cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has made his mark online with karaoke videos, tallying 600,000 Facebook followers.
Selfie snapshots are in the mix, with Tokyo's archbishop Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi posting a photo with colleagues from the bus on the way to pray at Francis's grave.
Cardinals "are absolutely fascinating personalities who've taken their place in pop culture", firing public enthusiasm for the event, Laporte said.
That fascination has been stoked by pop culture blockbusters like Dan Brown's novel Angels and Demons , adapted for film in 2009, or the acclaimed thriller Conclave released this year, based on a book by novelist Robert Harris. – AFP

Verify social media content authenticity, Fahmi warns Malaysians
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil expressed serious concern about netizens accepting social media information without verification. He emphasised this tendency makes people vulnerable to scams and misinformation campaigns. Fahmi highlighted the critical difference between social media content and professionally vetted mainstream media reports. He stated mainstream media upholds strict journalistic ethics and integrity standards. We are seeing a trend where many netizens believe everything they see online, Fahmi told the Dewan Rakyat. He explained some individuals even fall victim to sophisticated scams involving artificial intelligence like deepfakes. For instance, some believed claims of a cable car service in Perak, the minister revealed. He also cited the widely circulated false allegation that Zara Qairina died after being put into a washing machine. Fahmi described another case involving a so-called pathologist on TikTok livestreams claiming to be an expert. Checks with the Health Ministry revealed he was not a doctor, Fahmi informed the house. He added authorities confirmed the individual had a known history of scams. Fahmi further noted the Sabah Journalist Association criticised influencers swarming a press conference. These influencers behaved as if they were professional reporters at the event concerning Zara Qairina's death. They asked questions, but their intention was to create content for personal gain, he asserted. Fahmi pointed out that viral views generate significant financial returns for these creators. He lamented that integrity and factual verification were completely ignored in the process. To counter this issue, Fahmi announced a mobilisation of government communication channels. The Information Department, Bernama, and the Broadcasting Department will produce public education content. This initiative aims to help the public understand that not everything on social media is true. On a separate matter, Fahmi addressed the case of five teenagers charged in Kota Kinabalu. He stressed their identities are protected under Section 15 of the Child Act 2001. This is not due to any directive but is required under existing law, Fahmi clarified. Any case involving children under 18 automatically falls under the Child Act, he concluded. Pope Leo to visit Lebanon, cardinal says, in likely first trip abroad

The pope will travel to Lebanon "by December", Cardinal Bechara Rai told the al-Arabiya television channel. Rai, leader of the 3.5-million-member Maronite Catholic Church, did not give a specific date for the visit but said "preparations are already underway". A Lebanese official familiar with the matter confirmed that discussions were being held about a visit towards the end of the year, though a date had not yet been finalised. Leo, the first U.S. pope, was elected by the world's Catholic cardinals on May 8 to replace the late Pope Francis, who had planned to visit Lebanon but was unable to go because of health issues. Lebanon is home to more than two million Catholics, according to Vatican statistics. A Vatican spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Rai's remarks. A Vatican official, who asked not to be named, confirmed that a trip was being planned and said it could be part of a tour that would also include Turkey. Travelling abroad has become a major part of the modern papacy, with popes seeking to meet local Catholics, spread the faith, and conduct international diplomacy. They often draw crowds in the millions. Francis made 47 visits abroad during his 12-year papacy, travelling to 68 countries. He made a policy of visiting countries that often did not draw international attention as a way of highlighting problems in what he called the "peripheries" of the world. Leo has been expected to visit Turkey in late November as part of celebrations for the 1,700th anniversary of a major early Church council, which took place in Nicaea, now called Iznik. In a message to Lebanon earlier this month, Leo commemorated the fifth anniversary of a huge chemical explosion at the Beirut port that killed 200 people and caused billions of dollars worth of damage.
