Kolkata cops arrest ‘Bangla national' from Topsia, seize China-made drones

Time of India23-05-2025

KOLKATA: Police on Thursday arrested a Topsia-based exporter for allegedly possessing an illegal Chinese-manufactured drone at his home. Parts of another drone were also discovered during the investigation, police said.
According to police reports, this Topsia resident is actually a Bangladeshi national, originally from the Tangail region. Topsia police, who conducted the arrest, coordinated with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to confirm the authenticity of the documents. Upon verification that his passport was indeed fake, law enforcement moved to apprehend
Imran Ahmed
in the early hours of Thursday.
While Ahmed operated an export business in the area, he allegedly failed to provide satisfactory explanations regarding the possession of the drone, which lacked proper documentation.
Kolkata police STF and the detective department are also helping with the probe.
The matter also came up in the Calcutta High Court on Thursday. The HC is hearing a 2024 case filed by Ahmed's wife, which claimed that police are putting pressure on her husband and her to pay up in the pretext of a financial fraud investigation. Police claimed while it began as a fraud probe, it took a serious turn when authorities discovered that both Ahmed's passport and those of his family members were forged.
The HC refused to intervene in this case immediately. Ahmed's wife's passport was also taken by police for inquiry. The state had earlier told the HC that Ahmed's wife is also a Bangladeshi national. The woman's passport was submitted in court.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, while hearing the case, held: "There are allegations against the investigating officer in this case. However, the court does not wish to intervene in the investigation at this moment."
The judge noted the submissions of the state that "substantial material has been collected by the investigating agency and the investigation is in progress."
However, he directed the DC (south-east) to monitor the probe and consider any representation made by the woman. Her counsel told the court that she was praying for quashing of proceedings against her and initiation of departmental action against the IO regarding him acting in a personal capacity "beyond the reach of the investigation".
Her case was that "the IO acted beyond his jurisdiction in attempting to recover private civil dues in the name of criminal investigation, exerting pressure on banking authorities for unfreezing accounts in the absence of fair judicial orders, intimidating and harassing the woman." The woman's counsel told the court, "When the petitioner's husband was arrested, the IO started a frivolous recovery process through the petitioner, called her to the police station and made her execute documents, she had to sell jewellery and car to give them money.
"
Regarding the prayer for preservation of the CCTV footage at the PS, the court directed the woman's counsel to make an application before the jurisdictional court.

India's all-party delegation receives UK support for Operation Sindoor, anti-terror efforts

London [UK], June 3 (ANI): The all-party parliamentary delegation from India concluded a day of high-level engagements in London, meeting UK government ministers, parliamentarians, party leaders, think tanks, and India friendship groups as part of its visit from May 31 to June 3, 2025. Discussions during the visit focused on strengthening India-UK collaboration against cross-border terrorism, with Operation Sindoor highlighted as a significant shift in India's counter-terrorism approach. The delegation received wide-ranging support, reaffirming shared commitments to global security, justice, and strategic partnership, according to High Commission of India, London press release. The day began with an interaction with UK-based think tanks, where the threat of cross-border terrorism and how Operation Sindoor sets a new strategic benchmark in India's fight against it were discussed. The delegation met Catherine West MP, Minister for the Indo-Pacific at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. She reaffirmed the UK's condemnation of terror attacks in India, its strong bilateral ties with India, and support for global efforts to bring perpetrators of terror to justice, read the release. At Conservative Campaign Headquarters, the delegation engaged with Lord Dominic Johnson of Lainston CBE, Co-Chair of the Conservative Party, and Koolesh Shah, Co-Chair of the Conservative Friends of India. They voiced strong support for India's fight against terrorism, acknowledged its global implications, and lauded the Indian diaspora's contribution to the UK. The delegation also met with Labour Party India Friendship Groups--including Labour Friends of India, Labour Convention of Indian Organisations, Sikhs for Labour, and Hindus for Labour. The groups expressed unified support for India's anti-terrorism efforts, emphasising the need to dismantle terror infrastructure and curb terror financing. In a separate meeting, the delegation briefed Seema Malhotra MP, UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship and Minister for Equalities, on Operation Sindoor. The day concluded with a dinner interaction with UK thought leaders, discussing the scourge of terrorism, its social impact, and the connected rise of radicalisation. The Indian delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, includes BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari, Samik Bhattacharya, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, Congress MPs Ghulam Ali Khatana and Amar Singh, former Union Minister MJ Akbar, and former Ambassador Pankaj Saran. Earlier, the all-party delegation interacted with the Indian diaspora at India House in London, reaffirming India's united stance and unwavering commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms. This diplomatic outreach follows Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 as a decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists, which claimed 26 lives. Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists affiliated with groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. As part of this initiative, seven multi-party delegations are visiting countries worldwide to inform international partners about India's response to terrorism and its broader fight against cross-border terror threats. Sharmistha Panoli row: Calcutta HC rejects interim bail, her advocate says

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 3 (ANI): After the Calcutta High Court rejected the interim bail plea of social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli, her lawyer, Md Samimuddin said that the HC has directed the police to produce the case diary so that the 'bail hearing can be held on June 5.' Speaking to ANI, Samimuddin mentioned that the HC also instructed authorities to ensure proper amenities are provided to her in the correctional home and barred the filing of any fresh FIRs against her. 'The High Court has directed the state to produce the case diary so that the bail hearing can be held on the 5th. It also instructed the state to ensure that basic amenities, which are currently lacking in the correctional home, are provided to her. Furthermore, the court stated that no fresh FIR should be filed for the same cause of action, and we are hopeful of getting bail on the 5th,' he said. A 22-year-old law student from Pune, Sharmistha Panoli, was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram on Friday for allegedly hurting religious sentiments with a video on Operation Sindoor. The Instagram clip was reportedly derogatory towards a particular religion. However, Panoli had deleted the video and issued an apology on May 15. On Saturday, Panoli was produced before the Alipore Court in Kolkata, which remanded her in judicial custody for 14 days. Earlier on June 1, Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Bar Council of India and Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India, strongly condemned the arrest of law student Sharmishtha Panoli. Mishra denounced it as a grave miscarriage of justice and a direct attack on freedom of expression. Mishra asserted that the Bengal government and Kolkata Police have repeatedly demonstrated selective enforcement of the law, targeting individuals from specific communities while overlooking more serious offences committed by others. ‘Dereliction of duty not criminal offence'

Kolkata: A post office peon, who was arrested in connection with the issuance of 29 passports against 10 , was granted bail by the Calcutta High Court on the grounds that his delivering the passports to an unauthorised person was at most a "dereliction of duty". Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Justice Suvra Ghosh on May 16 granted bail to the peon, Biswajit Ghosh. He was alleged to be part of a racket that issued 29 passports on the basis of 10 Aadhaar cards. The state counsel told HC that the gang obtained fake passports in exchange for huge amounts of money, and lakhs of rupees were transferred to the members over the last five years. Taking into account Ghosh's statement under Section 161 of CrPC, the judge noted that the only allegation against him was that he delivered 29 passports to co-accused Mohan Shaw in violation of the office memorandum, which mandates that passports should be delivered to the addressee only and not redirected. If not delivered, they should be sent to the sender. "The petitioner appears to have delivered the passports to the co-accused despite there being no authorisation in favour of the co-accused by the passport applicants. Such a lapse on the part of the petitioner can at best be termed as dereliction of duty. No money trail has prima facie been detected connecting the petitioner to the alleged crime," the judge observed. Ghosh's counsel submitted that, being a peon at the post office, he was not aware of the contents of the parcels. Moreover, no money trail could be linked to him during the probe. He was arrested in Jan 2025 for a case registered at Bhadreswar PS on Nov23, 2024.
