Sharmistha Panoli row: Calcutta HC rejects interim bail, her advocate says

India Gazette2 days ago

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 3 (ANI): After the Calcutta High Court rejected the interim bail plea of social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli, her lawyer, Md Samimuddin said that the HC has directed the police to produce the case diary so that the 'bail hearing can be held on June 5.'
Speaking to ANI, Samimuddin mentioned that the HC also instructed authorities to ensure proper amenities are provided to her in the correctional home and barred the filing of any fresh FIRs against her.
'The High Court has directed the state to produce the case diary so that the bail hearing can be held on the 5th. It also instructed the state to ensure that basic amenities, which are currently lacking in the correctional home, are provided to her. Furthermore, the court stated that no fresh FIR should be filed for the same cause of action, and we are hopeful of getting bail on the 5th,' he said.
A 22-year-old law student from Pune, Sharmistha Panoli, was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram on Friday for allegedly hurting religious sentiments with a video on Operation Sindoor. The Instagram clip was reportedly derogatory towards a particular religion. However, Panoli had deleted the video and issued an apology on May 15.
On Saturday, Panoli was produced before the Alipore Court in Kolkata, which remanded her in judicial custody for 14 days.
Earlier on June 1, Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Bar Council of India and Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India, strongly condemned the arrest of law student Sharmishtha Panoli. Mishra denounced it as a grave miscarriage of justice and a direct attack on freedom of expression.
Mishra asserted that the Bengal government and Kolkata Police have repeatedly demonstrated selective enforcement of the law, targeting individuals from specific communities while overlooking more serious offences committed by others. (ANI)

Greta Thunberg sails to Gaza with aid: Israel says 'we are prepared', threatens to raid ship

Greta Thunberg sails to Gaza with aid: Israel says 'we are prepared', threatens to raid ship (Pic credit: Instagram/AP) Israel said it is "prepared" and will "act accordingly" to stop Swedish activist Greta Thunberg , who is sailing to Gaza with aid. Meanwhile, the Israeli defence forces have also threatened a special forces raid on the ship that is carrying Thunberg and other activists, according to a report from The Times of London. The 22-year-old set sail Sunday aboard the Madleen, a small vessel operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, carrying essential supplies like milk, rice, protein bars, and tinned food for Palestinians in the war-torn enclave. The Israeli military has responded strongly to the mission, warning that it is "prepared" and "will act accordingly" to prevent the boat from reaching Gaza. "The navy operates day and night to protect Israel's maritime space and borders at sea," Israeli army spokesperson brigadier general Effie Defrin said at a press conference. "We have gained experience in recent years, and we will act accordingly." The Madleen, which departed from Sicily on June 2, is part of a long-running effort by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, a non-violent international movement that has sent ships to Gaza since 2010 to protest the Israeli blockade and deliver humanitarian relief. Thunberg shared photos from the boat wearing a keffiyeh scarf and holding a Palestinian flag, describing the voyage as an act of solidarity. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Council or Housing Association Tenant? Shortly after departure, some of the 11 other activists on board reported being followed by drones. These were later identified as Greek coast guard devices, not Israeli surveillance. This isn't the first time the flotilla has faced resistance. In early May, another vessel in the coalition, Conscience, was reportedly damaged in international waters off Malta. Activists suspect it was hit by an Israeli drone, though Israel has not confirmed any involvement. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition maintains that its goal is peaceful and humanitarian. On Tuesday, the group posted on social media, "Together, we can open a people's sea corridor to Gaza." Israel, meanwhile, recently eased its blockade on Gaza, but aid groups say the flow of relief remains insufficient. The United Nations and international organisations continue to call for expanded access to food, medicine, and other basic necessities in Gaza, where civilian suffering has worsened amid ongoing conflict.

How social media became the riskiest part of students' lives

When a 19-year-old engineering student in Pune reposted something written by another handle on the India-Pakistan conflict on Instagram on May 7, she received a torrent of abuse. She deleted the post, then apologised. However, her post continued to be shared on the platform with some handles threatening to conduct protests against her and others demanding she face legal days later, she was rusticated from her college over the post. And then, the same night, she was arrested. An appeal for bail in a lower court was turned down. It was finally the high court that granted her bail, observing that it was an 'absolutely shocking case' and questioning the police if it was 'bent upon ruining the girl's life.'

Cornered and battered, Pakistan banks on Trump to ‘arrange' talks with India post-Op Sindoor

After Donald Trump falsely claimed brokering a ceasefire, Pakistani leaders from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Bilawal Bhutto are wooing the US president to arrange talks with India. read more Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army chief General Asim Munir attend the funeral of a person killed in an Indian airstrike on a terrorist facility conducted on May 7, 2025, under Operation Sindoor. (Photo: Pakistan ISPR) After suffering a beating in Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has sought US President Donald Trump's help in arranging talks with India. After Trump falsely claimed credit for the India-Pakistan ceasefire, Pakistani leaders have launched a full-scale drive to appease the US president. While Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made appeals at the US Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari amplified the appeal in Washington DC. In addition to appeals to Trump, Pakistani leaders have also continued their disinformation campaign about the Pahalgam attack, with Shehbaz saying at the US Embassy event that the attack was a false-flag operation by India. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In response to the Pahalgam attack on April 22, India on the night of May 6 launched 'Operation Sindoor' under which it struck terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK). After Pakistan attacked Indian cities and military bases, India began striking Pakistani military sites, including more than a dozen airbases, radar sites, and air defence units. After four days of beating, Pakistan requested a ceasefire on May 10 and India granted the request. Bilawal, a coalition partner of Shehbaz and a former foreign minister, is currently on a visit to the United States where he is a leading a high-level delegation as part of an outreach in the wake of the last month's conflict. It comes after India dispatched all-party delegations to various countries to convey India's message about terrorism, the Pahalgam attack, and Operation Sindoor. Trump should arrange 'comprehensive dialogue' with India, says Bilawal In an interaction with journalists in Washington DC, Bilawal said that Pakistan wants Trump to arrange 'comprehensive dialogue' with India. 'On 10 different occasions, he [Trump] has taken credit for facilitating the ceasefire between India and Pakistan — and rightly so. He deserves that credit, because it was his efforts that helped make the ceasefire possible. So, if the US is willing to help Pakistan in maintaining this ceasefire, it is reasonable to expect that an American role in arranging a comprehensive dialogue would also be beneficial for us,' said Bilawal, according to Dawn. Mocking India's centrality in the Indian Ocean Region and role in the Indo-Pacific region, where India looks at itself as a net security provider, Bilawal said that India was not even a 'paperweight' and should not at all be considered a counterweight to China. On his part, Shehbaz said that Trump is 'a man for peace'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'President Trump is a man against escalation and a man against cold and hot war,' Shehbaz further said. Separately, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that dialogue should India be on all issues and not just on terrorism as India maintains. Dar said that dialogue should cover issues like terrorism, the Indus Waters Treaty, and broader bilateral issues, according to Dawn. 'Whenever they [Indians] want a dialogue, at any level, they will find us ready, but we are not desperate,' said Dar.
