Rare D-Day armoured vehicle joins Canadian War Museum collection
Article content
The M4A2 Sherman Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle or BARV arrived at the museum in late June, but restoration of the war relic will take several years, said Grant Vogl, an arms and technology collections specialist at the war museum.

'It's currently one of our top priorities for restoration,' he added.

The BARV is only one of five left in the world.

Around 60 of the specialized vehicles were built during the war and it was believed that 48 of them were used on D-Day, June 6, 1944. British and Canadian personnel operated the BARVs, which were used to tow disable or destroyed tanks and landing craft that were blocking access to the beaches as waves of soldiers came ashore in Normandy, France.
Article content
'The BARVs were some of the first vehicles to hit the beach after the first wave,' Vogl said. 'They were definitely taking fire.'
Article content
Each BARV was built on the chassis of a M4A2 Sherman tank, but instead of the gun system an armoured super structure was added. The vehicle could operate in water up to three metres deep. One of the crew was a qualified diver who had the job of attaching cables to disabled equipment that had to be towed out of the way.

Sherman BARVs were also used during the Rhine River crossing in March 1945. That operation involved Canadian, United States and British troops. BARVs remained in British military service until 1963, according to the war museum.

The precise D-Day involvement of the BARV acquired by the war museum is still being researched, Vogl said, but museum staff have discovered the vehicle's serial number, which will aid in researching its specific history.

Vogl said the restoration of the BARV would be cosmetic in that it would be prepared for display at the museum in Ottawa, but would not be in running order.

Still the initiative will be challenging.
Article content
The war museum has some tracks for Sherman tanks in its parts inventory, but other components will need to be found. This BARV is missing its engine and parts of the suspension.
Article content
Much of Canada's heavy military equipment was left in Europe after the Second World War. Other Sherman tanks and vehicles were sold to militaries in South America, in particular Argentina, which has become a repository of parts. 'It's kind of a wild goose chase to find these parts,' Vogl said. 'Sometimes it can be tricky. Some will have to be built from scratch.'

VinFast founder to inject another US$1.5 billion in exchange for R&D assets
Workers assemble a car at the Vinfast electric vehicle plant in Thoothukudi, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. (AP Photo/ Rafiq Maqbool) VinFast's founder Pham Nhat Vuong has agreed to buy the EV maker's research and development arm for US$1.52 billion, his latest cash injection into the loss-making Vietnamese company as it strives to break even by the end of 2026. The deal will involve Novatech Research and Development JSC, a Vietnam-incorporated entity, being carved out of VinFast Trading and Production JSC (VFTP), its domestic manufacturing arm, VinFast said in a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Novatech will hold investment costs tied to completed R&D projects, while VFTP will continue to lead EV production and future research in Vietnam. VinFast, which debuted on the Nasdaq in 2023, has faced challenges including weak consumer demand and stiff competition. It made a net loss of $712.4 million for the first quarter, although revenue jumped 150 per cent to $656.5 million. VinFast's shares were up 1.4 per cent to $3.59 in pre-market trade. Since its launch in 2017, the company has relied heavily on support from Vuong, who holds about 98 per cent of shares in VinFast and its parent company Vingroup where he serves as chairman. The transfer of shares in Novatech to Vuong, valued at nearly 40 trillion dong ($1.52 billion), comprises a fair value assessment of 17.25 trillion dong plus a premium. Intellectual property linked to Novatech's assets will be leased back to VinFast for manufacturing purposes as needed. VinFast has said it has completed the development of its first generation of EVs. Research and development costs were $81.2 million in the first quarter of 2025, down 22.3 per cent year-on-year. The EV maker has set a delivery target of 200,000 cars for 2025, more than double its deliveries in 2024. Most of VinFast's deliveries are in the Vietnamese market. Enovix Establishes R&D Center of Excellence in India to Accelerate AI-2™ Platform Development
FREMONT, Calif., Aug. 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Enovix Corporation (Nasdaq: ENVX) ('Company' or 'Enovix'), a global high-performance battery company, today announced that it has created an R&D Center of Excellence in Hyderabad, India to accelerate the development of its Artificial Intelligence Class TM second-generation battery platform AI-2 TM into 2025. The new Enovix 18,000-square-foot R&D facility in Hyderabad's prestigious 'HITEC City' with neighbors Google, Micron, Intel, etc., now employs about 40 full-time employees, most of whom are engineers and scientists with advanced degrees, including a deep bench of electrochemists and materials scientists. The India team uses advanced battery modeling and cutting-edge machine learning that will accelerate the first prototypes on the Enovix AI-2 platform for engineering evaluation this year. The AI-2 product development will utilize every Enovix world-wide site to reduce development time, as shown below. Our Korean team will develop and manufacture the 115mm-wide, 0.3- mile long rolls of AI-2 silicon anodes with next-generation silicon anode materials deposited on a very thin copper foil layer – in a timeframe 50% faster than our current approach. Then, the prototype batteries will be manufactured in Malaysia directly on our high volume manufacturing (HVM) line, eliminating the significant time loss of transferring R&D processes to manufacturing, as happened with our AI-1 technology. The new AI-2 samples will also be tested in Penang to develop production test programs and then fully characterized by our Fremont R&D team. By uniting electrochemical and mechanical modeling, materials development, and rapid prototyping under one roof, the Hyderabad R&D Center will speed up AI-2 development. The Hyderabad R&D team's expertise in electrochemistry and mechanical modeling played a critical role in the development of the AI-1™ platform. They invented the electrolyte that meets the smartphone battery requirements- >900 Wh/L Energy Density, >1000 cycle life, and 3C fast charge. In addition to contributing to the structural integrity of AI-1, they have also now created an innovative constraint for AI-2 that maintains mechanical robustness while improving performance and energy density. The Hyderabad battery lab can produce about 2,600 coin and small pouch cell prototypes per year for fast, early rapid materials evaluation. And the test area can test up to 750 small cells simultaneously. Enovix CEO, Raj Talluri, said, 'From my experience at building similar high-performance teams at TI, Qualcomm, and Micron – India has always had a tremendous depth of engineering talent. By integrating modeling, materials development and rapid prototyping under one roof, our R&D Center accelerates innovation, as has already been demonstrated on our AI-1 platform.' T.J. Rodgers, Enovix Chairman, added, 'We took longer than we wanted in getting the AI-1 production-worthy, and we consider the Hyderabad R&D center to be a permanent organizational improvement to prevent that kind of delay in the future. India has an excellent educational system in which the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are at the Cal Tech and MIT level. India still has extremely rigorous pre-college testing to separate out the top 1% of students for advanced IIT degrees, without the current political distortions of the U.S. system. In the same way Silicon Valley is the U.S. center of excellence for chip architecture and design, Hyderabad is the India center of excellence for electrochemistry.' Rodgers concluded, 'Intel dominated microprocessors for four decades by relying on the one-two punch of having parallel R&D teams working on both generation N and generation N+1 of a given technology at the same time. We now have ninety engineers in two groups that give us the one-two punch – at a price we can afford.' About Enovix Corporation Enovix is on a mission to deliver high-performance batteries that unlock the full potential of technology products. Everything from IoT, mobile, and computing devices, to the vehicle you drive, needs a better battery. Enovix partners with OEMs worldwide to usher in a new era of user experiences. Lewis Hamilton says he has ‘a lot going on in the background' after another tough race
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — A day after calling himself 'useless,' Lewis Hamilton said he's facing issues 'in the background' after another difficult Formula 1 race. Hamilton finished 12th Sunday, the same place he'd qualified the day before, a result which had prompted him to call himself 'absolutely useless' and suggest Ferrari might consider changing drivers. His race was a world away from teammate Charles Leclerc, who was disappointed with fourth after starting on pole. 'When you have a feeling, you have a feeling. There's a lot going on in the background that is not great,' Hamilton told British broadcaster Sky Sports after the race when asked to explain his comments from a day before. Asked if he'd lost his love of racing, Hamilton said no. In response to a question about seemingly being forced off the track by old rival Max Verstappen, a standout moment in an otherwise largely quiet race for Hamilton, he said: 'I don't really remember it, to be honest.' It was a frustrating day overall for Ferrari as Leclerc lost pace in the second half of the race and went from fighting for the win to dropping off the podium altogether after a hard-fought battle with George Russell of Mercedes. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. In a lengthy radio message, Leclerc suggested Ferrari was not listening to him in an 'incredibly frustrating' situation and that the car had become 'undriveable.' After the race, though, Leclerc said he'd been mistaken. 'I spoke too quickly, I guess,' he told Sky Sports, and said he'd been informed after the race that there had been a problem with his car's chassis. ___ AP auto racing:
