Enovix Establishes R&D Center of Excellence in India to Accelerate AI-2™ Platform Development

Globe and Mail2 days ago
FREMONT, Calif., Aug. 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Enovix Corporation (Nasdaq: ENVX) ('Company' or 'Enovix'), a global high-performance battery company, today announced that it has created an R&D Center of Excellence in Hyderabad, India to accelerate the development of its Artificial Intelligence Class TM second-generation battery platform AI-2 TM into 2025.
The new Enovix 18,000-square-foot R&D facility in Hyderabad's prestigious 'HITEC City' with neighbors Google, Micron, Intel, etc., now employs about 40 full-time employees, most of whom are engineers and scientists with advanced degrees, including a deep bench of electrochemists and materials scientists. The India team uses advanced battery modeling and cutting-edge machine learning that will accelerate the first prototypes on the Enovix AI-2 platform for engineering evaluation this year.
The AI-2 product development will utilize every Enovix world-wide site to reduce development time, as shown below. Our Korean team will develop and manufacture the 115mm-wide, 0.3- mile long rolls of AI-2 silicon anodes with next-generation silicon anode materials deposited on a very thin copper foil layer – in a timeframe 50% faster than our current approach. Then, the prototype batteries will be manufactured in Malaysia directly on our high volume manufacturing (HVM) line, eliminating the significant time loss of transferring R&D processes to manufacturing, as happened with our AI-1 technology. The new AI-2 samples will also be tested in Penang to develop production test programs and then fully characterized by our Fremont R&D team. By uniting electrochemical and mechanical modeling, materials development, and rapid prototyping under one roof, the Hyderabad R&D Center will speed up AI-2 development.
The Hyderabad R&D team's expertise in electrochemistry and mechanical modeling played a critical role in the development of the AI-1™ platform. They invented the electrolyte that meets the smartphone battery requirements- >900 Wh/L Energy Density, >1000 cycle life, and 3C fast charge. In addition to contributing to the structural integrity of AI-1, they have also now created an innovative constraint for AI-2 that maintains mechanical robustness while improving performance and energy density. The Hyderabad battery lab can produce about 2,600 coin and small pouch cell prototypes per year for fast, early rapid materials evaluation. And the test area can test up to 750 small cells simultaneously.
Enovix CEO, Raj Talluri, said, 'From my experience at building similar high-performance teams at TI, Qualcomm, and Micron – India has always had a tremendous depth of engineering talent. By integrating modeling, materials development and rapid prototyping under one roof, our R&D Center accelerates innovation, as has already been demonstrated on our AI-1 platform.'
T.J. Rodgers, Enovix Chairman, added, 'We took longer than we wanted in getting the AI-1 production-worthy, and we consider the Hyderabad R&D center to be a permanent organizational improvement to prevent that kind of delay in the future. India has an excellent educational system in which the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are at the Cal Tech and MIT level. India still has extremely rigorous pre-college testing to separate out the top 1% of students for advanced IIT degrees, without the current political distortions of the U.S. system. In the same way Silicon Valley is the U.S. center of excellence for chip architecture and design, Hyderabad is the India center of excellence for electrochemistry.'
Rodgers concluded, 'Intel dominated microprocessors for four decades by relying on the one-two punch of having parallel R&D teams working on both generation N and generation N+1 of a given technology at the same time. We now have ninety engineers in two groups that give us the one-two punch – at a price we can afford.'

Intel CEO faces Trump call to step down over Chinese investments

WASHINGTON, D.C.: President Donald Trump demanded that Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan step down immediately, calling him "highly conflicted" over his past investments in Chinese technology firms, some linked to the Chinese military. Reuters previously reported that Tan, through personal and venture fund investments, put at least US$200 million into hundreds of Chinese advanced manufacturing and chip companies between 2012 and 2024. Many of the firms were identified by U.S. analysts as having military connections. "The CEO of INTEL is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem," Trump wrote on Truth Social. His remarks came after Republican Senator Tom Cotton sent a letter to Intel's board chair questioning Tan's Chinese business ties and a recent criminal case involving Cadence Design, Tan's former company. Intel shares fell three percent this week. The company said it, its board, and Tan remain committed to "advancing U.S. national and economic security interests" and aligning with Trump's "America First" agenda. Tan did not respond to Reuters' request for comment. Trump's intervention is unusual for a sitting president and has drawn mixed reactions from investors. "It would be setting a very unfortunate precedent … but certainly his opinion has merit and weight," said Phil Blancato, CEO of Ladenburg Thalmann Asset Management. Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said Tan's China links were "creating an increasingly bad look" and noted he lacks the personal relationship with Trump that some other tech CEOs have built. Tan, a Malaysian-born Chinese American, became Intel CEO in March after Pat Gelsinger was ousted. Earlier this year, Reuters reported on 20 funds and companies in which Tan's Walden venture firm was a co-owner alongside Chinese government entities. Some investments were listed as current in Chinese databases despite a source telling Reuters that Tan had divested. While CEO of Cadence from 2008 to 2021, Tan oversaw sales of chip design software to a Chinese military university. Last month, Cadence agreed to plead guilty and pay over $140 million to resolve U.S. charges tied to those sales. Intel, once a leader in chip manufacturing, has been losing market share in data centers and PCs to AMD and missed the surge in AI chips dominated by Nvidia. Its market value has dropped below $100 billion, down from highs before a more than 60 percent plunge last year. Tan has shifted strategy, cutting jobs, shelving planned plants, and slowing work on its Ohio factory, now set for completion in 2030–31. The site was a significant beneficiary of $8 billion in CHIPS Act subsidies. Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno has suggested a fraud investigation into Intel's state commitments.

Is Apple Stock a Buy After Appeasing President Trump?

Aiming to shift manufacturing back to the United States, President Trump had previously made Apple AAPL his main target of companies that would face steep penalties if they continued to ramp up production outside of domestic soil. This threat includes a 100% tariff on imported semiconductor chips, which would have dramatically increased the cost to produce Apple products, as most of the tech giant's iPhones and components are manufactured in India and China. That said, Apple has continued to make swift moves to appease the Trump administration, with a calculated blend of economic investment and political diplomacy. This makes it a worthy topic of whether Apple stock can finally move past tariff concerns surrounding its global supply chain. Apple's Investment Pledge to Avoid Tariffs On Wednesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook met with President Trump at the White House to announce that the company will be investing an additional $100 billion in U.S. manufacturing, bringing its total domestic commitment to $600 billion over the next four years. Notably, the funding will support new data centers, smart glass production in Kentucky, and semiconductor partnerships in Utah and Texas. Apple has also opened a manufacturing academy in Detroit, administered by Michigan State University, to train U.S. workers in AI and smart manufacturing. Magnifying Apple's appeasement and political diplomacy, Tim Cook presented a custom-made glass sculpture engraved with President Trump's name and mounted on a 24-karat gold base. Most importantly to investors, the gesture was symbolic and strategic, as it coincided with Trump's announcement that Apple would be exempt from the 100% tariff on foreign-made semiconductors. AAPL is Gaining Momentum Attributed to the tariff exemptions, Apple stock has now spiked +10% in August, with these month-to-date gains leading its 'Magnificent Seven' big tech peers. However, AAPL is still toward the bottom of the group for the year, down 9% to only top Tesla's TSLA -18%, with Nvidia NVDA up more than +30% and leading the pack. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research AAPL Valuation Comparison In terms of valuation, Apple currently checks in with the third cheapest P/E ratio among the Mag 7 at 30.5X forward earnings, only trailing Alphabet's GOOGL 19.7X and Meta Platforms META 27.2X. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Apple also has the third-lowest P/S ratio among these big tech peers at 8.1X forward sales, trailing Amazon's AMZN 3.3X and Alphabet's 6.4X. Still, AAPL does trade at premiums to its decade-long forward P/E and P/S medians of 23.6X and 5.4X, respectively. Apple Intelligence Updates One of the stock performance barriers holding Apple back relative to its Mag 7 peers outside of Tesla has also been the perception that the company isn't capitalizing on artificial intelligence like the others. While Apple may not have the ability to streamline its operations with AI at the moment, its hybrid AI system, Apple Intelligence, does have more than 20 features across its platforms/operating systems. These include visual intelligence features, writing tools, and continued upgrades to Apple's personal voice assistant Siri, which includes integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT. Coinciding with its investment in domestic chip manufacturing, Apple has worked with Broadcom AVGO to build a custom AI server chip called Baltra, designed to power and enhance its cloud-based services, including for Apple Intelligence and the revamped Siri. Furthermore, Baltra will handle AI inference tasks in Apple's data centers that are expected to include high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and tensor/matrix units optimized for generative AI workloads. Mass production for these operations is targeted for 2026, with full deployment by 2027, and will help Apple maintain control over its AI ecosystem while competing with Nvidia, Alphabet, and Microsoft in the AI infrastructure race. Bottom Line For now, Apple stock currently lands a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). To the delight of long-term investors, Apple does appear to be moving past tariff concerns surrounding its global supply chain with strategic investments in the U.S. and a very beneficial collaboration with Broadcom. Considering such, Apple should be on track to hit its expectations of single-digit top and bottom line growth in fiscal 2025 and FY26. Plus, earnings estimate revisions (EPS) have started to move higher in the last week, which could lead to a buy rating. India faces tough choices under U.S. tariff pressure

A student of Gurukul school of Art completes artwork of U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, in Mumbai, India, Friday, Aug. 1, 2025. (AP Photo/Rajanish Kakade) India faces an ultimatum from the United States with major political and economic ramifications both at home and abroad: end purchases of Russian oil or face painful tariffs. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leader of the world's most populous nation and its fifth-biggest economy, must make some difficult decisions. U.S. President Donald Trump has given longstanding ally India, one of the world's largest crude oil importers, three weeks to find alternative suppliers. Levies of 25 per cent already in place will double to 50 per cent if India doesn't strike a deal. For Trump, the August 27 deadline is a bid to strip Moscow of a key source of revenue for its military offensive in Ukraine. 'It is a geopolitical ambush with a 21-day fuse,' said Syed Akbaruddin, a former Indian diplomat to the United Nations, writing in the Times of India newspaper. How has India responded? New Delhi called Washington's move 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable'. Modi has appeared defiant. He has not spoken directly about Trump but said on Thursday 'India will never compromise' on the interests of its farmers. Agriculture employs vast numbers of people in India and has been a key sticking point in trade negotiations. It all seems a far cry from India's early hopes for special tariff treatment after Trump said in February he had found a 'special bond' with Modi. 'The resilience of U.S.-India relations... is now being tested more than at any other time over the last 20 years,' said Michael Kugelman, from the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. What is the impact on India? Russia accounted for nearly 36 per cent of India's total crude oil imports in 2024, snapping up approximately 1.8 million barrels of cut-price Russian crude per day. Buying Russian oil saved India billions of dollars on import costs, keeping domestic fuel prices relatively stable. Switching suppliers will likely threaten price rises, but not doing so will hit India's exports. The Federation of Indian Export Organisations warned that the cost of additional U.S. tariffs risked making many businesses 'not viable'. Urjit Patel, a former central bank governor, said Trump's threats were India's 'worst fears'. Without a deal, 'a needless trade war' would likely ensue and 'welfare loss is certain', he said in a post on social media. What has Modi done? Modi has sought to bolster ties with other allies. That includes calling Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday, who said they had agreed on the need 'to defend multilateralism'. Ashok Malik, of business consultancy The Asia Group, told AFP: 'There is a signal there, no question.' India's national security adviser Ajit Doval met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow, saying the dates of a visit to India by the Russian president were 'almost finalized'. Modi, according to Indian media, might also visit China in late August. It would be Modi's first visit since 2018, although it has not been confirmed officially. Beijing's foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said in response to an AFP question on Friday that 'China welcomes Prime Minister Modi' for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. India and neighbouring China have long competed for strategic influence across South Asia. Successive U.S. administrations have seen India as a key partner with like-minded interests when it comes to China. 'All those investments, all that painstaking work done by many U.S. presidents and Indian prime ministers, is being put at risk,' Malik said. 'I have not seen the relationship so troubled since the early 1990s, to be honest. I'm not saying it's all over, not in the least, but it is at risk.' Can Modi change policy? Modi faces a potential domestic backlash if he is seen to bow to Washington. 'India must stand firm, put its national interest first,' the Indian Express newspaper wrote in an editorial. Opposition politicians are watching keenly. Mallikarjun Kharge, president of the key opposition Congress party, warned the government was 'disastrously dithering'. He also pointed to India's longstanding policy of 'non-alignment'. 'Any nation that arbitrarily penalizes India for our time-tested policy of strategic autonomy... doesn't understand the steel frame India is made of,' Kharge said in a statement. However, retired diplomat Akbaruddin said there is still hope. New Delhi can be 'smartly flexible', Akbaruddin said, suggesting that could mean 'buying more U.S. oil if it's priced competitively, or engaging Russia on the ceasefire issue.'
