Syria, Israel Hold Direct Talks in Paris: Report

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani met an Israeli delegation in Paris on Tuesday, aiming to bolster regional stability and address southern Syria's volatile situation, Syria's state news agency SANA reported. US officials previously mediated direct talks between Syrian and Israeli representatives, focusing on de-escalating the ongoing conflict in southern Syria. However, SANA confirmed both sides specifically addressed de-escalation efforts and, furthermore, discussed non-interference in Syria's internal affairs. The meeting also involved reactivating the crucial 1974 disengagement agreement, which established a vital UN buffer zone within the Golan Heights. Furthermore, this meeting marks the second direct engagement between delegations in Paris this month as both parties previously convened in July, agreeing to continue negotiations. However, they failed to reach a conclusive agreement on reducing southern Syrian tensions. Recent Southern Syrian Clashes Highlight Challenges Southern Syria's Sweida province recently witnessed brutal clashes, resulting in hundreds of fatalities after Druze fighters, along with Sunni Bedouin tribes and government forces, actively participated in these violent confrontations. Consequently, Israel launched airstrikes, stating its intervention prevented mass Druze killings by government forces. These recent skirmishes highlighted significant challenges for interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa; he struggles to stabilize Syria and maintain central control despite improving US relations and his administration's developing security ties with Israel. Syria and Israel hold first direct talks in US-brokered meeting

DAMASCUS - Syria and Israel held their first acknowledged direct talks Tuesday as Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani met with an Israeli delegation in US-brokered discussions aimed at de-escalating regional tensions following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. The two sides spoke about restoring a 1974 ceasefire agreement, which had established a buffer zone between Syria and Israel, according to Syria's state-run news agency SANA. Neither Syrian nor Israeli officials offered an official statement outlining details about what was said during the meeting, but a senior Trump administration official confirmed the talks. Washington has been pushing for the two countries to normalise relations amid a recent surge of tensions between them, in line with US President Donald Trump's vision of a "prosperous Middle East," which includes a 'stable Syria at peace with itself and its neighbours, including Israel," a US official told AP. 'The United States continues to support any efforts that will bring lasting stability and peace between Israel and its neighbours," they added, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "We want to do everything we can to help achieve that,' the official added. The meeting marks the first time Syria has acknowledged holding direct talks with Israel and comes at a time when tensions between the two countries peaked, following the fall of al-Assad in December. Shortly after the interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa's forces overthrew the former dictator's regime, Israeli troops took control of the UN-patrolled buffer zone that had been established under the 1974 ceasefire deal. Israel launched airstrikes on military sites in what it claimed was an attempt to prevent hostile forces from establishing themselves and instead create a demilitarised zone south of Damascus. Last month, Israel again intervened, launching dozens of airstrikes, when violence erupted in Syria's Suwayda province between Bedouin clans and the Druze minority on the other. Israel claimed it was protecting the Druze community, parts of which live in Israel. - Euronews

US envoy meets top Israeli Druze leader to discuss situation in Syria's Sweida

US envoy Tom Barrack met Israeli Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Syria's Sweida, where recent armed clashes left hundreds dead and heightened concerns over instability in the south. 'Today I had a warm and informative meeting with Israeli Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif and his team,' Barrack said in a post on X. 'We discussed the situation in Sweida and how to bring together the interests of all parties, de-escalate tensions, and build understanding.' Sweida, a majority-Druze region in southern Syria, has seen rare but deadly outbreaks of violence in recent months amid deepening frustration over economic collapse, corruption, and local clashes with armed groups.
