Oscar submission entries from Aug 15-Sep 10, movies should have 'Indianness': FFI
Synopsis The Film Federation of India (FFI) has announced the submission window for Indian films vying for Oscar consideration, running from August 15 to September 10. Eligible films must have a week-long theatrical run and embody "Indianness." The final selection, determined by a jury vote, will be revealed on September 28. Mumbai: The Film Federation of India (FFI) on Tuesday announced that the process of submission of movies for India's entry to Oscars this year will be from August 15 to September 10.
ADVERTISEMENT The eligible entries should have a theatrical run of at least a week and have the theme of "Indianness", it said.
"This is an important year for the Film Federation of India, this is the 75th year. It was formed in 1951 and this is the 98th Oscar year and we've been doing the procedure of Oscar since 1957," FFI president Firdausul Hasan said.
"We've been authorised by the academy to select one film from India that will represent our country in Oscar. So, the first film that we sent was 'Mother India', and the last film in 2024 was 'Laapataa Ladies'," he told reporters here.The final entry from India will be decided by a vote after all the screenings are done and will be announced on September 28."Mostly, films should've Indianness in it, and it should be a film which is idea-driven and not content-driven. Earlier, star-driven films were made, we would see who features in the film, and then decide whether we want to watch it or not," Hasan said.
ADVERTISEMENT "The FFI will provide all the help to the producers to have a smooth, democratic and transparent nomination process. We welcome more and more films to participate in the run to get nominated as India's entry into Oscars this year," Hasan said.The FFI, which is the parent body of the all the leading film associations of India, will nominate the chairman of the jury along with senior qualified people from various creative fields - from acting to directing, producing to costume, music, playback singer, sound recordist, and editing, to form a 25-member jury, according to the protocol of the Oscar Academy.
ADVERTISEMENT "It should be Indian origin film and about 90 per cent film should be shot in India, and the film should've Indianness. We've tried to cover every field while appointing the (jury) person. The person should be well-known, should have good experience, and must be a National award-winner," Hasan said.The content of the films must be 60 per cent in local dialect in any of the Indian languages. They should also have the proof of release with a minimum of one week run in theatres in India.
ADVERTISEMENT In addition to this, details of film festival entries or awards received for the film and payment of Rs.1,25,000 plus GST will be charged during the submission procedure.Films which are unreleased as of September 10, which is the last date of entry, and wish to apply for the Oscar entry will have to submit an undertaking and confirmation from the production and distribution company that the said films will be released for minimum of 7 days in theatres before the deadline of September, 30, the FFI said in a press statement.
ADVERTISEMENT Speaking of the support from the government for the Oscar campaign, Hasan said they've often sought financial assistance."We often appeal to the government for support. We had a meeting with NFDC a few months ago, and they will be sending two-three films to Oscars this year, they're working on it," he said.
Last year, Kiran Rao's "Laapataa Ladies" was chosen to represent India at the 97th Academy Awards but failed to make it to the shortlist.
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 15, 2026 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.

Badshah Faces Backlash From FWICE Over Alleged Pakistan-Linked US Concert, Asked To Clarify Association
Mumbai: Rapper Badshah is facing heat from the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) over his upcoming concert in Dallas, Texas. The FWICE has written a letter to Badshah seeking clarification on his association with 3Sixty Shows, a Pakistani company sponsoring his "Badshah UnFinished Tour" at the Curtis Culwell Centre on September 19, 2025. FWICE said that Badshah's collaboration with a Pakistani company goes against national sentiment and directives issued by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India. The letter highlighted ongoing terrorism and hostile activities directed against India from across the border, including the recent brutal massacre of innocent Indian tourists in Pahalgam. "As you are aware, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), in alignment with the directives issued by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, has clearly instructed all artists, performers, and technicians in the lndian entertainment industry to refrain from engaging in any professional collaborations or performances with Pakistani nationals or organizations connected to pakistan. These measures are in place considering the continuing acts of terrorism and hostile activities directed against lndia from across the border," read the letter. Speaking to ANI on the same, FWICE president BN Tiwari said, "Aesa lagta hai India ke pass promoters hi nahi rahe hai (It seems as if India does not have any promoters). Pakistani ko isliye promote kar rahe kyunki unko paise galat tarike se aate hai (They're promoting Pakistanis because they receive money through illicit or improper channels)..unke kaam ulte seedhe hote hai ( And their work is done in a wrong way). Indian artists should get paid. They do not care about what we should do and what we should not do. We should discuss the country's interests. The country means nothing to them (artists). Show milna chahiye chahe vo jo bhi karta ho (They should get the show, irrespective of who does it). There is a sentiment. Even after all the problems in Pahalgam, there is no peace. Parmanu bomb ki dhamki di ja rahi hai (There is a threat of a nuclear bomb.) It is very difficult to work with such countries and their people." He added, "Isi mahine mein dilli ja rahe hai kyunki Parliament chal rahi thi isliye hum soch rahe hai, ministeron logon se mil sakte hai (We are going to Delhi this month. Given that the Parliament's Monsoon Session is ongoing, we are considering meeting with the ministers. We want to meet as many people as possible. We want to make them aware." Ashok Dubey, FWICE, General Secretary, referred to a strong letter written to actor Kartik Aaryan, asking him to "withdraw" from a reported Independence Day event in Houston, USA. The film body raised concerns that the show is reportedly hosted by a Pakistani-owned entity and stated that participating in it would go against national interests, especially following the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. FWICE has been strict about collaborations with Pakistani nationals, previously warning actor Kartik Aaryan and condemning Diljit Dosanjh and makers of 'Sardaarji 3' for casting Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. They even demanded the cancellation of passports and a permanent bar on availing Indian citizenship privileges for those involved. "When the Kartik Aaryan issue happened, I told the government that we are an organisation. We are doing our duty. People should think about the country. We can fight to a certain extent. If a person does not listen, we can do non-cooperation. Even after we have taken non-cooperative action, our producers still do not understand. Our people do not understand. That is why we are going to Delhi on the 18th. We are asking for time from Ashwini Vaishnaw(Union Minister of Electronics & Information Technology). Agar isi tarah se chalta rahe to har aadmi, har artist is tareeke se videshon mein jaakar perform karega Pakistani organisers ke saath..( If this continues, every artist will perform abroad with Pakistani organisers," shared Dubey. He continued talking about the Kartik Aaryan issue, giving details, "When we called Kartik Aaryan's manager, humne unko letter that, unhone messaged kiya ki hamara programme cancel ho gaya hai. We are not going..." Coming back to the 'Badhshah Un-Finished Tour' and what FWICE is planning to do, Ashok Dubey added, "We are going to Delhi on the 18th. We will meet the representatives of the government. We will keep our words..." Badshah's team hasn't issued a statement yet, but the rapper's decision to perform in the concert has sparked controversy among fans and critics. FWICE expects Badshah to uphold national sentiments and directives, and a prompt response is requested to determine further action. "In light of this, we request your immediate clarification regarding your association with this event and the said organizers. We trust that as a respected Indian artist, you will uphold the sentiments of the nation and the directives issued by FWICE and the Government of India. Your prompt response will be appreciated so that we may take the necessary steps in accordance with our regulations. Thanking you," the letter concluded.
