Loni Anderson, ‘WKRP in Cincinnati' star, dies at 79
Her death was confirmed by publicist Cheryl J. Kagan, according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR).
Anderson, a two-time Emmy nominee, rose to fame playing the savvy radio receptionist in the sitcom created by Hugh Wilson. Before that, she appeared in shows like S.W.A.T., Police Woman, Barnaby Jones and Phyllis, and had auditioned for the role of Chrissy Snow on Three's Company.
THR reported that she initially turned down the WKRP role, saying in a 2020 interview, 'I don't want to play this part because she's just here to deliver messages and is window dressing.'
Creator Hugh Wilson asked her how she'd approach it, and they reimagined the character: 'Let's make her look like Lana Turner and be the smartest person in the room.'
Anderson's Jennifer broke the 'dumb blond' mould, refusing to do secretarial tasks and standing out as sharp and self-assured. She appeared in all but one of the show's 90 episodes from 1978 to 1982.
Born August 5, 1945, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Anderson was the daughter of Klaydon, an environmental chemist, and Maxine, a model.
Naturally dark-haired, she once said, 'I loved being a brunette… there was a mystery. When acting, I could be the bad lady.'

While Freaky Friday had one body swap, Freakier Friday takes things to the next level when Anna swaps with her daughter and Tess swaps with her soon-to-be granddaughter. Things were so confusing during the script table readings that Curtis made everyone wear hats to help them remember with whom their body had been swapped. 'As soon as the switch happened, we put on hats that had the new name so that you could understand,' Curtis said. However, she noted that later when it was the ensemble of women and girls working on-camera together with less 'cooks in the kitchen,' things felt less complicated. As a mom in both real life and in the film, Lohan found compassion for her character's parenting journey. 'It was refreshing to play Anna and show her off in a different light, where she's not grumpy and yelling at her mom, and where she can be struggling, trying to manage her daughter and being a mom,' Lohan said. 'Now, bringing that to the role was exciting for me, because it's a role I've never played before. I was able to take things from home and daily life moments and put them to Anna.' Disney tops earnings forecasts with streaming gains, raises guidance

(AP pic) LOS ANGELES : Walt Disney posted better-than-expected results for April through June and raised its full-year earnings guidance today as the company's streaming television profit grew and US theme park visitors increased their spending. Adjusted earnings per share rose 16% from a year ago to US$1.61 for Disney's fiscal third quarter. Analysts had expected US$1.47, according to the consensus estimate from LSEG. For the full year ending in September, the company projected adjusted EPS of US$5.85, a 10-cent increase from a prior forecast. The rosy earnings report was released a day after Disney announced a major deal with the National Football League, which will take a 10% equity stake in Disney's ESPN sports network. The value of the deal was not disclosed. Disney is working to build its streaming business in both sports and entertainment as traditional TV viewing declines. It is also expanding its popular theme parks and cruise lines. ESPN's new direct-to-consumer platform, priced at US$29.99 per month, is set to launch on August 21. Earlier in the day, Disney struck a deal to become the exclusive US domestic home of all WWE Premium Live Events, including WrestleMania, starting 2026. Disney is paying US$1.6 billion for the rights, the Wall Street Journal reported today. CEO Bob Iger said the launch of the ESPN app and the NFL deal, along with a coming integration of Hulu into Disney+, would create 'a truly differentiated streaming proposition'. 'With ambitious plans ahead for all our businesses, we're not done building, and we are excited for Disney's future,' Iger said. The company projected it would add 10 million Disney+ and Hulu subscribers in the current quarter, most of them from an expanded partnership with cable operator Charter. Shares of Disney were down about 2% in premarket trading. In the just-ended quarter, operating income in the entertainment division fell 15% to US$1 billion. Disney attributed the drop to lower results from traditional television networks and the strong performance of the film 'Inside Out 2' a year earlier. Disney's parks division reported a 13% increase in operating income to US$2.5 billion. Profit at domestic parks rose 22% even with new competition in Orlando, Florida, from Universal's Epic Universe, which opened in late May, as visitors increased their spending. MACDOEL (California), Aug 6 — Wolves are killing cattle across the American West — so US wildlife officials are turning to an unusual new defence: drones blasting AC/DC and audio from Marriage Story. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is using quadcopters equipped with thermal cameras and loudspeakers to patrol ranches and drive away wolves without physical force, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported earlier this month. This is because wolves remain protected under US federal law. Among the deterrents played over drone speakers are fireworks, gunshots, and recordings of people arguing, including the intense shouting match between Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver in Marriage Story. 'I need the wolves to respond and know that, hey, humans are bad,' USDA district supervisor Paul Wolf (yes, that's his real name) was quoted as saying. The effort is part of a federal 'wolf hazing' project launched in Oregon's Klamath Basin in 2022 after 11 cows were killed in just 20 days. Once drones were deployed, only two more cows were lost over the next 85 days, the report said. Music used in these airborne interventions includes AC/DC's Thunderstruck and Five Finger Death Punch's Blue on Black. 'Riding to the rescue are drone cowhands,' the WSJ wrote, noting the drones don't just shine spotlights from above but also shout commands.
