Short-handed Indiana Fever suffer another blow as Sophie Cunningham sustains season-ending injury
She was hurt during Sunday's victory at Connecticut.
Team officials did not provide details about the injury, the third season-ending one Indiana has experienced in August.
Guard Sydney Colson tore the ACL in her left knee on Aug. 7 in a game at Phoenix. Guard Aari McDonald broke a bone in her right foot in the same game.
And two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark still has not played since injuring her right groin in mid-July. Coach Stephanie White has not provided a timetable for Clark's return other than to say the Fever hope that Clark returns before the regular-season finale Sept. 9 against Minnesota.
With so many key players out, the outspoken Cunningham played a key role in helping Indiana stay in the playoff mix. She was averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals.
Indiana also announced it has signed Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract. The six-year veteran was averaging 5.0 points and 2.7 assists in six games with the Los Angeles Sparks. She also has played with Phoenix and Washington during her career. The Fever also released guard Kyra Lambert.

Promising Steelers CB is in Major Jeopardy of Losing Roster Spot
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cory Trice is a promising player, but he just can't stay healthy. Trice has missed the first two preseason games with a hamstring injury that was suffered on Aug. 1 during the Friday Night Lights practice. With Trice missing this much time, it will not be surprising if he gets cut at the end of this month. 'The guy is an NFL corner. He can play in this league. It's just a matter of him being available,' Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Monday. Trice has been snake-bitten by the injury bug his entire playing career. His size and physicality make him an attractive dime backer or potential tight end eraser if he can stay on the field. The problem is that there's not much evidence that he can do that, as unfortunate as it is. Once he was finally healthy enough to suit up, he was baptized by fire against the Bengals' star receivers in the regular season finale. The team's seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Purdue, Trice missed his entire rookie season with an ACL injury. He played in just six games in 2024, missing 11 games due to a hamstring injury that occurred while covering a punt against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 22. Trice was on injured reserve for a significant portion of the season. Trice has been a player with high hopes from the Steelers, despite being a seventh-round draft pick and has been considered by some a potential future starter. 'Just mentally, I'm just in a way better space with the knowledge I've been getting, I've been learning so many things from all the guys previously, like D-Jack and Pat P, and now I got Slay,' Trice said during the first week of training camp. 'I've just been learning so much, and I already know my talent gonna show.' Trice revealed that he trained with All-Pro outside linebacker T.J. Watt this offseason. The two have formed a close bond over the years. Watt even gave Trice a shoutout during his first press conference this year and last year in Week 2 when Trice had a clutch red zone interception. With mentors like Watt, Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey, Trice is hoping to take that next step and have a breakout year in 2025. Steelers Sign Former Browns Offensive Tackle
The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed offensive tackle Julian Pearl, the team announced on Monday afternoon. Pearl, who's in his second-year as a pro, was last with the Cleveland Browns. He tried out for the Steelers last week, and was on his way to another when he got a call from his agent and re-routed to Pittsburgh. Pearl signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft. He was also selected by the Michigan Panthers as the sixth overall selection in the 2024 UFL draft on July 17. After being waived by the Ravens in late August, Pearl was signed to the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad on Oct. 29. He was released a month later. Pearl then signed with the Cleveland Browns' practice squad on Dec. 10. He signed a reserve/future contract with Cleveland in January, and remained with the team until being waived on Aug. 4. Pearl, who stands at 6-foot-6, 315 pounds, played six years at the University of Illinois. He was named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention (coaches and media) in his senior year in 2023. He started all 12 games at left tackle that season. He made 23 consecutive starts at left tackle since missing a game at Indiana on Sept. 2, 2022. In 2023, he was named Phil Steele Preseason All-Big Ten second team and Athlon Preseason All-Big Ten third team. Rookie offensive tackle was evaluated for a concussion in Saturday night's preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Steelers have also been without backup tackle Calvin Anderson, who has been out with a lower-body soft tissue injury. For depth, the Steelers also signed veteran offensive lineman Andrus Peat on Aug. 7. Peat, 31, is a 10-year NFL vet. The first-round pick of the New Orleans Saints out of Stanford in 2015, he spent nine seasons in New Orleans. Peat played left tackle and left guard for the Saints and started 102 games out of 111 games played in New Orleans. Alan Saunders provided reporting for this story.
