BBC will no longer live stream ‘high risk' music acts after Bob Vylan incident

Leader Live16 hours ago
In a statement issued on Thursday the corporation apologised for the group's 'deplorable behaviour' after frontman, Bobby Vylan, whose real name is reportedly Pascal Robinson-Foster, 34, led crowds in chants of 'death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)' during their set on Saturday afternoon.
The BBC admitted it had assessed the act as 'high risk' before Glastonbury but deemed them suitable for live streaming.
The broadcaster said this was 'clearly not the case', adding it was changing its procedures around live music events meaning any music performances deemed high risk will now not be broadcast live or streamed live.
The statement said: 'We deeply regret that such offensive and deplorable behaviour appeared on the BBC and want to apologise to our viewers and listeners and in particular the Jewish community. We are also unequivocal that there can be no place for antisemitism at, or on, the BBC.
'It is clear that errors were made both in the lead-up to and during Bob Vylan's appearance. We think it's important to set out some of the detail around the streaming of this performance.
'Bob Vylan were deemed high risk following a risk assessment process applied to all acts appearing at Glastonbury. Seven acts including Bob Vylan were included in this category and they were all deemed suitable for live streaming with appropriate mitigations.
'Prior to Glastonbury, a decision was taken that compliance risks could be mitigated in real time on the live stream – through the use of language or content warnings – without the need for a delay. This was clearly not the case.'
It added: 'Given the failings that have been acknowledged we are taking actions to ensure proper accountability for those found to be responsible for those failings in the live broadcast. We will not comment further on those processes at this time.
'Furthermore, as a result we will make immediate changes to live streaming music events.
'Any music performances deemed high risk will now not be broadcast live or streamed live.'
The BBC has also promised to take action to 'ensure proper accountability' and issued an apology to viewers, especially the Jewish community.
Avon and Somerset police have launched an investigation into the comments made during the group's West Holts Stage set.
It has since emerged that the group were already under investigation by police for comments made at a concert one month before Glastonbury.
Video footage appears to show Bobby Vylan at Alexandra Palace telling crowds: 'Death to every single IDF soldier out there as an agent of terror for Israel. Death to the IDF.'
The rap group issued a statement on Tuesday claiming they were being 'targeted for speaking up' after Avon and Somerset police began its investigation.

Gracie Abrams makes first public appearance since going Instagram official with Paul Mescal with THOSE cosy Glastonbury snaps

Gracie Abrams put on a stylish display at Hourglass Cosmetics' The Vinyl Lounge pop-up event on Thursday after going Instagram official with Paul Mescal. The singer, 25, spent last weekend partying at Glastonbury with actor Paul, 29, and their friends before travelling straight back to London for yet another event. Keeping busy, Gracie appeared to be in good spirits as she posed up a storm at the pop-up event, held at the iconic Sounds of the Universe record store. She looked effortlessly chic in a long-sleeved white top and wide-leg khaki trousers, which she styled with a pair of black sandals. Gracie made her debut as Hourglass' new global brand partner as she celebrated the launch of the brand's new summer collection. The Close to You hitmaker posed with fellow singer Mabel, who looked equally stylish in a fitted brown collared dress with a billowing skirt. Also in attendance for the fun-filled evening were the likes of Laura Haddock, Pixie Geldof and Savannah Miller, among others. Her outing came just one day after Gracie finally went Instagram official with Paul on Wednesday as she shared a gallery of snaps from her time at Glastonbury. Gracie made her Glastonbury debut on Friday and belted out her top hits including I Love You, I'm Sorry to the crowds while she was supported by her boyfriend Paul. Marking the occasion, Gracie shared a huge array of photographs documenting her weekend at the Somerset-festival, including one with Paul. Buried in the photo 'dump' was a photograph of Gracie and Paul lying down together as they put on a cosy display in their Instagram debut. Gracie - who has been dating the Normal People star for more than a year - simply captioned the post with a string of red love hearts. Gracie was also supported at her Glastonbury gig by Paul's former co-star and close friend Daisy Edgar-Jones, who was spotted avidly singing along to her in the crowds. The trio lived it up at Glastonbury with Harris Dickinson and India Mullen, as well as Daisy's boyfriend Ben Seed and Paul's siblings Nell and Donnacha. Pixie Geldof was also in attendance and cut an elegant figure in a black top and a sheer brown skirt while Laura Haddock looked sophisticated in a cream jumpsuit After Gracie made it Instagram official, their singer friend Rose Gray, 28, also shared snaps of them together among a carousel of hard-partying pictures. Gracie and Paul looked cosy in the shots with the Irishman enjoying kisses from his girlfriend, and even a cheeky bite on the cheek in one shot. The group were also joined by a friend called Olivia - who works as a talent coordinator for Gladiator II director Ridley Scott, which Paul starred in. Gracie had the time of her life at Glastonbury and danced on Paul's shoulders while watching Olivia Rodrigo's closing set on Sunday. In shots shared to Instagram, Gracie threw her arms in the air while belting out the singer's version of The Cure's hit single, Friday I'm in Love. Gracie - who is the daughter of Star Wars director, JJ Abrams - and Paul have ben going from strength-to-strength since they were first linked in 2023. The couple looked more loved-up than ever as they danced among the revellers with Paul turning around with Gracie sat on his shoulders. Gracie and Paul keep their romance under wraps and rarely appear on red carpets together, walking separately at the History of Sound premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May The pair have been romantically linked since June 2024 after they were spotted enjoying a cosy dinner date. But they keep their romance relatively under wraps, rarely speaking about one another in interviews or appearing on red carpets together. At the History of Sound premiere at Cannes Film Festival, Paul and Gracie walked the red carpet separately, though she did attend to support her partner's new film. They sparked split rumours earlier this year, when MailOnline revealed they had a tearful argument while dining at a trendy restaurant in London, but they have since patched things up.

Jarvis Cocker records special version of the Shipping Forecast to celebrate its 100th anniversary on the BBC

Friday 4 July marks 100 years since the first broadcast of the Shipping Forecast on BBC radio on 4 July 1925. To mark the occasion, Jarvis Cocker has recorded a special shipping forecast to be broadcast for an audience at the Crossed Wires Podcast Festival in Sheffield. The festival will welcome 'ships' fans to a special 100th anniversary programme with Radio 4 announcers Lisa Costello and Viji Alles, hosted by Chris Mason. The session is part of BBC Sounds' free Fringe festival with live podcast recordings and exclusive sessions, open to the public. Just two days before Pulp, aka Patchwork, were wowing crowds with a surprise performance at Glastonbury, Cocker was quietly nestled in the BBC Radio 4 studio, reflecting on his love for the Shipping Forecast. Cocker says: 'The Shipping Forecast is something you absorb unconsciously if you live in the UK. It's been on the airwaves for over 100 years… Now technically speaking, it's a weather guide designed to help sailors on the high seas. But it helps people navigate in other ways than that. For instance, for insomniacs, it's a mantra that hopefully helps them drift finally off to sleep.' He says: 'I think it's known around the world as a go-to chill-out thing - before chill-out things were invented, probably.' The Shipping Forecast is preceded by a piece of music called Sailing By. Cocker notably chose this track as one of the eight he would take to a desert island when he appeared on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs in 2005. Cocker says: 'When you listen to Sailing By, it really does feel like life is drifting past you in an extremely pleasant way. A handy go-to sedative to have to hand if you ever happen to become a castaway - or get cut off from normal life for any other reason.' Cocker used to listen whilst going to sleep, citing that 'the repetitive nature' and 'the soothing nature of the person who reads it' helped him to drop off. 'I think it's because it's a routine', he adds, 'it's on every day, so it's something that you can rely on. It's on at a set time, so it gives a bit of stability. And if the rest of your life isn't that stable, it can provide some kind of stability for it. Sailing By was a very relaxing piece of music... I know that a lot of people do use it for that kind of relaxing, almost 'meditation-like' thing.' When asked why he felt the Shipping Forecast was still important, he said: 'I think because even though sometimes it's talking about bad weather conditions and storms and stuff, it's actually an oasis of calm in the day. There's no musical backing to it, it's just a human voice talking to you. Some words, which you don't really know what they mean at all, but the sound of it is comforting and will put you into a nice place.' Cocker said some of his favourite place names include, German Bight – 'for some reason I always think of a cocktail sausage there. I suppose it's because a frankfurter cocktail sausage is a small frank.' - and Hebrides – 'I've actually been to the Hebrides, so that conjures up some kind of real image.' Imagining how the Shipping Forecast might sound in another 100 years, Cocker gave us his best robot impression, suggesting: 'It may be a robot who is saying 'north to northwesterly, occasionally poor.' I hope not. I think it would be better to keep it as a person. Who knows? We don't know what the world's going to look like in 100 years, or whether people will even be in it. If people are still in it, it might all be water. So everybody will be listening to it. It'd be like the number one programme, because everybody will be in a boat. Kevin Costner will be hailed as a seer who knew that we would all become a Water world one day. I don't know. I hope it is. I wouldn't be around to hear it anyway.' The Shipping Forecast is produced by the Met Office on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) as part of the UK's statutory obligations to provide Maritime Safety Information to seafarers via approved broadcasting methods. The Shipping Forecast is also shared with the BBC for its own broadcast. An online journey through the one-hundred-year history of the Shipping Forecast can be found on the BBC History website. Special anniversary programmes from BBC Radio 4 are available now on BBC Sounds, including The Shipping Forecast: A Beginners Guide with Paddy O'Connell, The Shipping Postcards from continuity announcers, Archive on 4 – The Shipping Forecast at 100: Shipshaped and Soul Music: Sailing By.
