Tottenham XI vs Bayern Munich: Solanke return, confirmed team news, predicted lineup, injury latest for friendly

Yahoo2 days ago
Dominic Solanke is expected to be available for selection ahead of Tottenham's final pre-season friendly.
The striker picked up an ankle injury in a friendly clash against Reading in July and has not appeared since, but it is hoped he can return to the fold on Thursday as the Lilywhites visit Bavaria to face Bayern Munich.
They will make the trip without James Maddison, though, after the midfielder was stretchered off with a fresh knee injury during a 1-1 draw with Newcastle at the weekend.
Son Heung-Min will also be absent after he bid an emotional farewell to the club in the same match. He is expected to complete a move to LAFC in the coming days.
As this is Spurs' last friendly outing ahead of the UEFA Super Cup, Frank is expected to name a squad similar to that which will face European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Maddison's injury means that Lucas Bergvall could return to the starting XI as a No10, as he did against Arsenal in Hong Kong a week ago.
Son's absence is set to prompt a shake-up in Frank's forward line, and could open the door for Solanke to return.
Frank said last week that the striker 'should be fit' to return in time for the Bayern clash, and, with Richarlison struggling for form, he could be handed a chance to impress, though his minutes may be limited as he looks to avoid reaggravating the injury.
Mohamed Kudus has been quick off the mark after moving to north London and should return on the right wing, while Mathys Tel is set to face his former club for the first time in place of Wilson Odobert.
Pape Matar Sarr, scorer of a wonder goal in last week's north London derby, and Rodrigo Bentancur have proven an effective defensive midfield partnership this summer, but Frank may opt to try a new combination, handing Archie Gray a run out alongside the Senegalese as he looks to determine his best midfield setup.
Joao Palhinha is in the running to take a holding midfield role, but, after joining the club on Sunday, it is likely too soon for him to start. He will be eyeing a debut cameo, though.
Pedro Porro and Cristian Romero will continue to hold down the right-hand side of the Spurs back four, though the left side has seen more rotation this summer. After they held Arsenal goalless, though, Djed Spence and Micky van de Ven should get the nod.
Tottenham predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence; Sarr, Gray; Tel, Bergvall, Kudus; Solanke
Injured: Maddison, Kulusevski, Udogie, Dragusin, Takai, Solomon, Gil
Time and date: 5.30pm on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison to have surgery on ruptured ACL

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — England midfielder James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured ACL, Tottenham said Thursday. Maddison was injured during Spurs' preseason friendly against Newcastle in Seoul. No timeframe was given for his recovery. 'His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team,' Tottenham said in a statement. 'Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery." Recovery from ACL surgery can take between 6-12 months, meaning Maddison is likely to miss the majority of the upcoming season, which starts next week. It is the latest blow for the 28-year-old Maddison, who missed last season's Europa League final with a knee injury. "We will be supporting him every step of the way,' Tottenham said. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer: James Robson, The Associated Press

Maddison set to miss most of Spurs season after knee injury

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison is expected to miss most of the upcoming Premier league season after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament. The England international missed the end of the 2024/25 campaign with a knee injury but featured in pre-season under new boss Thomas Frank. Maddison collapsed in pain during a 1-1 draw with Newcastle in South Korea on Sunday with no one around him and left the pitch on a stretcher late in the game. Spurs' worst fears have now been confirmed, with the player facing surgery. "We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee," said a club statement. "The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul. "His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team." The news is also a major blow to Maddison's hopes of forcing his way into England boss Thomas Tuchel's selection for next year's World Cup. Tottenham, who won the Europa League last season, face Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup in Italy on August 13 before launching their Premier League campaign against Burnley three days later. jw/kca/ea

Who is Shadrach Ekiugbo? Liverpool's exciting centre-back sensation

It's time to introduce the next generation at Liverpool and chiefly among them Shadrach Ekiugbo. We've written about the exciting up and coming talent at the academy. The likes of Joshua Abe and Erik Farkas are both U16 players, but they have been promoted to the U18s this summer to continue their development at a higher level. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Because of his eligibility for England and Germany, Joseph has been likened to Jamal Musiala. An attacking midfielder, who can make really intelligent runs into the box and score goals, he too, just like Abe and Farkas are worth keeping an eye on. The other player who should be on fans' radar is Ekiugbo. Recently, Liverpool's U16 side travelled to Tokyo, at the same time as the first team. They travelled to play two exhibition matches against the select. Liverpool lost both games (1-0 and 2-0) but there were some promising individual performances. Among the stand-out performers in both games was Ekiugbo. He's a different player to Joseph, Farkas and Abe. Primarily because he is not an attacker but a defender. What stood out about him in the games against the select is his reading of the game and how cool and composed he was. On top of that, he was brilliant on the ball, sending through balls and long passes that broke opposition lines. Ekiugbo was always looking to play the ball forward and instigate attacks. So, it's clear that he's a promising defender. And one name to keep an eye on. It's also important to note that he's been at the academy for a long time. He signed his first contract with the club as an U9 player, just like Abe and Joseph. As per the club's official website, Trent Alexander-Arnold was present on that special day. Ekiugbo has progressed through the ranks impressively ever since. He's now also an England U15 international, making his debut earlier this year against Turkey. In the two games, Ekiugbo caught the eye on both occasions. He played one half in each game and won four out of his six duels, winning eight out of 12 duels in total over the course of just over 90 minutes. He also won two out of three aerial duels and showcased his passing ability completing 45 of his 53 attempted passes and completing two out of three dribble attempts, which are impressive numbers for a centre-back in just 90 minutes. The next step for Ekiugbo is to break into the U18 side and earn that promotion just like Abe and Farkas have. He's got every chance if he continues to perform like he did at international level and in Tokyo.
