And that's the delay.
For most programmes we watch on TV, such as soaps or the latest dramas, a slight delay isn't an issue.
But when it comes to sport, every second matters - and the last thing you want to hear is the local pub roaring at a goal, or a friend texting you about a result, before you've seen it.
Sky has been making significant progress on addressing this for its streamed TV products like Sky Glass,

With Freeview's streamed successor Freely other broadcasters will have to think about how they can address the problem on their channels.
Fortunately, it's an issue the BBC is now tackling on iPlayer.
The corporation has started a test for some viewers, depending on the device they're streaming from.
"The delay on iPlayer has reduced significantly in recent times but is still around 40 seconds," the BBC explained in a blog post.

"Many streaming services today have similar delays. On our broadcast services the end to end delay is just 8-10 seconds - a significant difference.
"For some content, viewers may not notice, but for live sport and for live events with a social media following, delays can detract from the viewing experience.

"We are aiming to address these delays whilst maintaining a high quality of experience through our work on 'low latency streaming'."
For now, the trial will run on the iPlayer stream of BBC Two between 9am and 5pm.

For sports fans, you could notice the difference for major events like Wimbledon and the Women's Euro 2025 tournament airing on the channel.
The first devices to receive the trial are:
Amazon Fire TV Stick (3rd generation)
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd generation)
Samsung CU8000 TV
Samsung CU8500 TV
To benefit from it, you'll need to switch the "beta" option on in the settings, if it's available to you.
You can check by going into the settings and looking for iPlayer Beta and selecting On.

Spain eventually find their groove to smash Belgium
Striker Alexia Putellas scored twice for world champions Spain as they shook off a slow start to beat Belgium 6-2 in their Euro 2025 Group B clash, a result which more or less guarantees the Spaniards' progress to the knockout stage. On a chilly, windswept evening far removed from the recent Swiss heatwave, Putellas blasted Spain into the lead, picking up the ball after some deft one-touch passing and lashing it into the net in the 22nd minute with a characteristically powerful left-foot shot. The lead lasted only a couple of minutes as the Belgians went up the field and won a corner, which Justine Vanhaevermaet headed home at the near post but, despite struggling to maintain a consistent rhythm, Spain still managed to take a lead into the break after Irene Paredes scored with a towering header from a corner in the 39th minute. Recently returned from a health scare, Aitana Bonmati came on for Vicky Lopez at halftime and almost scored four minutes later but instead Belgium levelled again in the 50th minute, with Hannah Eurlings running on to a long ball and slotting home. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but after a lengthy VAR review Eurlings was found to have been onside when the ball was played. 53 mins: Spain 3-2 Belgium Not level for long as a sweeping Spanish move ends with an emphatic finish by Esther Gonzalez #rtesport #WEURO2025 📺 @RTE2 and @RTEplayer — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) July 7, 2025 Belgium's joy was short-lived as Esther Gonzalez restored Spain's lead a minute later, with Spain finally beginning to show their class. Mariona Caldentey's fourth goal for Spain in the 61st minute put them at ease and they began to toy with the Belgians, with a brilliant curled effort from Claudia Pina in the 81st minute effectively ending the contest. There was still time for Putellas to net her second goal four minutes from time to put Spain top of the group on six points and eliminate the Belgians, who lost their opening game against Italy 1-0.

Netflix quietly rolls out free upgrade for millions of users – and it cuts down on dreaded buffering
NETFLIX has quietly made some big improvements to the platform that will boost the picture quality - and reduce annoying buffering in the process. Errors and re-buffering are sadly commonplace when trying to watch movies and TV via any streaming app. 1 The upgrade was quietly implemented in March Credit: Alamy But Netflix says it has worked out a way to reduce re-buffering by 10 per cent. And even if you are unlucky enough to be hit by re-buffering it should drag on a little less, with a 5 per cent cut to the duration. The firm has also managed to make start play faster, as well as decrease playback errors by 3 per cent. It's all thanks to some visual improvements going on behind the scenes at Netflix. Read more about Netflix The biggest part of all this is maintaining that film grain effect you'll be familiar with from cinemas. "Camera sensor noise introduces its own characteristics, while filmmakers often add intentional grain during post-production to evoke mood or a vintage feel," Netflix explained in a blog post. However, this can be tricky to maintain when compressing big videos down so they stream faster. Netflix says the feature has been rolling out since March - and you don't need to do anything to benefit from it. Most read in Tech It's not clear which titles have been converted in this way. However, the blog post did show examples of how it had been achieved in They Cloned Tyrone, starring Netflix reveal huge list of movies and TV shows being axed next month – with some children's favourites in the mix MORE WAYS TO BOOST PICTURE QUALITY ON YOUR TV Pick the right picture mode An easy one to start with is picture mode, which has the largest effect on your TV's overall image. The picture mode you select automatically adjusts multiple aspects of your TV's image at the touch of the button. Most boxes offer a range of presets that typically include cinema, gaming, sports, dynamic, standard and more. It's typically recommended that you stick to the picture mode labelled Movie (Samsung), Cinema (LG and Sony), or Calibrated (Vizio). These modes come the closest to official HD and UHD standards, meaning they present shows and movies as the creators intended. Have a play around with your TV's picture mode and pick the one that's best for you. You may find that, if your device is in a bright room, you're better off picking a setting such as Dynamic or Vivid, which are best for naturally lit spaces because they exaggerate contrast.
