Urgent steps to take immediately after an accidental needle prick
Knowing the right response can make all the difference in an emergency. By NURSYAHMINA ZAINAL 15 Aug 2025 12:24pm Photo for illustrative purposes only. Photo: Canva. WONDERING what to do if you accidentally sustain a needle-stick injury? Medical professionals share vital guidance on how swift, correct action can reduce the risk of infection and serious complications. For parents, teachers and community members, knowing the right response can make all the difference in an emergency. Here are seven essential steps to follow if you or someone you know experiences a needle-stick injury: 1. Stay Calm and Act Fast Panic can delay the necessary steps. Keeping a clear head ensures you respond quickly and correctly, which is crucial in preventing infections. 2. Do Not Squeeze or Suck the Wound Avoid pressing or sucking the injury site. This can push harmful germs deeper into the bloodstream, increasing the risk of infection. 3. Wash Thoroughly with Soap and Water Rinse the wound immediately with clean, running water and mild soap to remove as many pathogens as possible. Photo for illustrative purposes only. Photo: Canva. 4. Apply Gentle Pressure to Stop Bleeding Once cleaned, press the area lightly with a clean cloth or sterile gauze to stem bleeding. Do not use harsh chemicals such as concentrated alcohol directly on the wound, as this may cause irritation. 5. Seek Medical Attention Without Delay If the needle's source is unknown or if there's a possibility it was used by someone with a high-risk condition like HIV or hepatitis, get medical help right away. A doctor may recommend blood tests and preventive treatments. 6. Ask About Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Some clinics offer PEP which is a short course of antiretroviral drugs that can significantly reduce the risk of contracting HIV if taken within one to two hours of exposure, and no later than 72 hours. 7. Monitor for Warning Signs Stay alert for symptoms such as swelling, redness, or fever. These could indicate infection and require immediate medical evaluation. More Like This

Rafizi reveals wife receives threatening messages
Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 14): Pandan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli revealed that his wife received threats this morning following an incident involving his son yesterday who was injected by an unknown individual, and the case is currently being investigated by police. He said the threats were received by his wife at 1.12am and 11.02am today, each containing the threat to 'keep quiet, if you continue, you will get AIDS' with a syringe emoji, from the same phone number. 'I think these (threats to family members) will continue because in my opinion the strategic message is that because I am not afraid of summons. I've been through summons case, I've been through the lockup, I've lost my position or whatever, I don't care, right? 'So I think those involved feel it might be easier to influence my decision if it's through my wife,' he said at a press conference in Parliament today. Giving an update on his son's latest situation, Rafizi said initial examinations at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Hospital showed no side effects in the first 24 hours, thus giving confidence to rule out the possibility of an injection in the form of drugs or poison. However, he said, regular blood tests for six months should be done to ensure there are no viral infections such as hepatitis or HIV, since only follow-up tests can provide full confirmation. He said the injection could possibly contain drugs or poison, be in the form of a virus, or just liquid, but without the syringe that the suspect took away, its contents could not be identified immediately. Yesterday, Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the incident was believed to have occurred at about 2pm at the passenger pick-up and drop-off area when the victim, a boy, was reported to be with his mother and their driver. 2,000 unauthorised ads on health products pulled down since Jan 1
MCMC is working closely with the health authorities to identify fake medicines and unauthorised health service advertisements. PETALING JAYA : A total of 2,033 unauthorised online advertisements on health products and services have been pulled down during the first seven months of this year. Deputy communications minister Teo Nie Ching said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission did this after receiving 2,283 complaints from the health ministry, Bernama reported. 'In 2022, MCMC received eight complaints and removed all related ads. In 2023, 439 complaints were received and 390 ads were removed. 'Last year, MCMC received 3,312 complaints and took down 1,643 unauthorised online ads,' she said after officiating the Johor-level Madani MSME Digital Grant Festival 2025 in Permas Jaya, Johor Bahru, today. Teo said her ministry is working closely with the health authorities to identify false and unauthorised medicine or health service advertisements. 'When we receive a complaint from the ministry, MCMC will notify social media platform providers to take the advertisement down if it is unauthorised. 'If the complaint comes from the public, for example on fake medicines, we will refer it to the health ministry for verification first before further action is taken,' she said.
