Glenn Phillips ruled out of Zimbabwe T20I Tri-Series due to injury

The Hindu18-07-2025
New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I Tri-Series, which also involves host Zimbabwe and South Africa.
'BLACKCAPS batting all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been withdrawn from the tour of Zimbabwe after injuring his right groin. Phillips suffered the injury during the Major League Cricket (MLC) final and was assessed on arrival in Zimbabwe where it was determined he would require a number of weeks to rehabilitate. Wellington Firebirds batter Tim Robinson, who joined the squad as cover for players involved in the MLC final, will stay with the squad for the remainder of the T20 Tri-Series,' New Zealand Cricket said in a statement issued on Friday.
'It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre. Much like Finn, we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. We know he was eager to get out on the field for the BLACKCAPS and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens,' New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said.
Phillips' replacement in the Test squad will be named later. He will return to New Zealand with Mitchell Hay and James Neesham, who were also called in as cover.

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul (Photo by) India's cricket team, led by Shubman Gill , staged a remarkable final-day turnaround in the fourth Test against England at Manchester on July 27. Starting 311 runs behind after England's massive first innings, India avoided defeat through centuries from Gill, Ravindra Jadeja , and Washington Sundar , keeping their hopes alive to level the five-match series. The Indian comeback began after losing two early wickets, with Gill and KL Rahul putting together a crucial 188-run partnership. "To be able to have that same mindset for 140 overs is very difficult, and that is what differentiates a good team from a great team, and I think we showed that today, that is why we are a great team," Gill told BCCI TV. "Zero for two and then the partnership between me and KL bhai, I think that's what ignited the belief that yes, we can achieve this task. Extremely, extremely happy. To be able to get a draw from the position that we were in yesterday is extremely satisfying," he added. The 25-year-old Gill, captaining the Test team for the first time, has accumulated 700 runs in the series with four centuries, including a double hundred. He considers this innings his most satisfying performance. "I think this inning of mine was the most pleasing to me," Gill said. After Gill's dismissal, Jadeja and Washington displayed remarkable resilience, forming an unbeaten partnership of 223 runs to save the match. "When Jaddu bhai and Washy were batting, it was not easy. The ball was doing something but the way they both batted, so calmly.. and to be able to get a Test century from there is when you realise how big an achievement it is," Gill praised his teammates. Poll How do you rate the Indian team's chances of leveling the series in the final Test? Very High Moderate Low Very Low For Washington, the innings marked his first Test century, making it particularly special. "I think this hundred really means a lot and I'd genuinely love to dedicate this to my family because they've been extremely supportive throughout my time playing cricket right from day one. So, it definitely means a lot, a lot more for them," Washington said. Washington acknowledged Jadeja's experienced presence during their partnership. "Jaddu bhai really played out those crucial spells, spinners were also getting a lot of purchase. So, we just wanted to focus really hard on watching the ball and it's just really special to have actually drawn this game," Washington said. "This draw really means a lot for the whole setup and I'm sure this game is going to give us a lot more confidence," he added. I think we have showed why we are a great team: Shubman Gill

Manchester, Jul 28 (PTI) India skipper Shubman Gill reckons the belief to stage an epic final day turnaround in the fourth Test against England stemmed from his partnership with KL Rahul and in doing so, they showed why they are a 'great team". Starting their second innings 311 runs in arrears after England racked up a massive first-innings total, Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar struck excellent hundreds to bail their team from the brink of defeat and remain in contention to level the five-match series. 'To be able to have that same mindset for 140 overs is very difficult, and that is what differentiates a good team from a great team, and I think we showed that today, that is why we are a great team," Gill told the BCCI TV. 'Zero for two and then the partnership between me and KL bhai, I think that's what ignited the belief that yes, we can achieve this task. Extremely, extremely happy. To be able to get a draw from the position that we were in yesterday is extremely satisfying," he added. Rahul played a neat 90-run knock and was associated in a partnership of 188 runs with Gill, after which the day belonged to the duo of Jadeja and Washington. Leading the Test team for the first time, the 25-year-old Gill has been prolific in this series and has already amassed 700 runs with four centuries including a double ton, but picked the one at Old Trafford as his best. 'I think this inning of mine was the most pleasing to me," Gill said. The job was far from done for India when Gill was dismissed, but Jadeja and Washington batted with immense responsibility and showed character to deny the frustrated English players. 'When Jaddu bhai and Washy were batting, it was not easy. The ball was doing something but the way they both batted, so calmly.. and to be able to get a Test century from there is when you realise how big an achievement it is," Gill lauded his teammates. For Washington especially, the knock was very special as it was his maiden Test hundred. Needless to say, he was delighted to have scored a hundred when his team needed it the most. 'I think this hundred really means a lot and I'd genuinely love to dedicate this to my family because they've been extremely supportive throughout my time playing cricket right from day one. So, it definitely means a lot, a lot more for them," Washington said. That he had a seasoned campaigner like Jadeja at the other end benefitted Washington during their undefeated match-saving partnership of 223 runs on Sunday. 'Jaddu bhai really played out those crucial spells, spinners were also getting a lot of purchase. So, we just wanted to focus really hard on watching the ball and it's just really special to have actually drawn this game. 'This draw really means a lot for the whole setup and I'm sure this game is going to give us a lot more confidence," Washington said. England lead the series 2-1 heading into the final Test in London from Thursday. Want a hundred against Brook? Of course! Ashwin slams Stokes for 4th Test fiasco

R Ashwin slammed Ben Stokes and England for the fiasco they created by trying to end the Manchester Test early and get a draw. The game was heading for a stalemate on Day 5 as Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar's partnership ended the chances of a win for the hosts and saved India. However, when both men were heading towards their hundreds, Stokes decided to extend the handshake and call for early and Sundar both rejected the offer and continued to bat on and this frustrated Stokes, who was seen asking the former if he wanted to score a hundred against a part-time bowler like Harry Brook. Jadeja and Sundar went on to slam their hundreds. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin slammed England for their double standards. The former spinner said that both men had bravely fought whatever the hosts dished out at them and it was Stokes' mistake to give the ball to Brook."Have you heard the term double standards? What is double standards? You shake hands and then you say I'm frustrated. You also don't make a hundred, you also cry and go away." "Since morning, he played your Archer, played your Matthew Hoggard, played Darren Gough, played Andrew Flintoff—played all your bowlers, whoever you guys gave, he played them—and now when it's going towards a draw, both sides, and after putting in full hard work since morning he has reached here—and he should leave the hundred and walk away?""And what was your question? 'You want to make a hundred against Harry Brook?' No brother, he wants to make a hundred. Please bring Steve Harmison. Bring Flintoff. He didn't say no. You're giving bowling to Harry Brook—that's your mistake, not ours," said Ashwin.'I would have told them to bat the whole 15 overs'Ashwin pointed out that the early stumps can be called during the mandatory overs when both captains feel that a result isn't possible. The former spinner said that while one of the reasons why England wanted an early end was to protect their players, the second one was out of pure didn't find it to be a valid reason for calling for an early stop and said if he was the Indian skipper he would have batted the remaining 15 overs as well."If both captains believe that the game cannot head towards the result, you both can shake hands after the mandatory overs and you can call it a draw. One captain wanted to draw the game. He wanted to close out.""Why did he want to close out? Two things. He didn't want to tire his bowlers. Okay, fine. Second is: I'm frustrated, I'm not happy, you also shouldn't be happy. You also shouldn't make a hundred."advertisement"These are the two pointers. Second pointer doesn't come under any rule. On the first pointer, India was on the right side. Actually, if I was India, I would've stood and played the whole one hour. As a captain, I would have said, play all the fifteen overs," said also said that Jadeja and Sundar were well within their right to go get hundreds and the both deserved it."That statement of his—You want to get a hundred against Harry Brook? Of course he does! These are Test runs. He wants to get it, and he deserves it," said was slammed by pundits for his actions after the match.- EndsMust Watch
