Morningstar says Korean stocks are emerging market's best bet for decade

Korea Herald5 days ago
A fund manager at Morningstar Wealth is selling Chinese and Japanese equities to increase exposure to South Korea, which he's betting on to provide the best returns in both emerging and Asian markets over the next decade.
Korea's key draws are technology stocks tied to the artificial intelligence boom and a newfound political will for corporate reforms, according to Mark Preskett, a London-based senior portfolio manager at the firm. He said he's betting on annual returns from Korean stocks of 11 percent-12 percent in dollar terms over the next 10 years.
Preskett is unfazed by US President Donald Trump's announcement Monday of a 25 percent tariff on Korean imports, saying that his base case is for 'some kind of agreement to be signed by the two countries in the coming weeks.' He said that the lack of any escalation on existing tariffs on autos, and the exemption of electronics and pharmaceuticals, were also positives for his outlook on Korea.
The benchmark Kospi index has climbed more than 30 percent this year, making it one of the world's top performers in 2025. Global funds poured about $3 billion into Korean equities in May and June around the election of President Lee Jae Myung, who has intensified efforts to improve corporate governance standards and raise equity valuations.
'Korea stands out at the top in terms of expected returns,' Preskett said in an interview in London. 'We see this as the beginning of a revaluation story.'
The fund manager said he's encouraged by the government's drive to codify corporate governance reform with its 'Value-Up' program, while legal changes approved by parliament last week will help alleviate longstanding concerns about minority shareholder rights and the dominance of family-run chaebols.
The more stable government since Lee's election, along with concerted steps to reduce the 'Korea discount' of the nation's stocks versus emerging-market peers, are making the market more attractive, particularly relative to China, Preskett said. Companies in Korea have a weighting of less than 11 percent in the benchmark MSCI Emerging-Market Index, compared with China's 26 percent.
'We see Korea has some of the same attractiveness from a valuation perspective, but the fundamentals are a little stronger,' he said. 'You don't have this overhang of the property sector, you don't have the sort of question marks around shareholder governance.'
Among specific stocks, Preskett is positive on SK Hynix Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. as makers of high-bandwidth memory chips that are crucial for AI. He also says they're undervalued, even with Samsung up by about 14 percent this year, and SK Hynix up 62 percent.
Corporate reforms
Risks remain for the market, even beyond tariffs, especially in terms of getting companies on board with the government's plans.
'Controlling shareholders may resist deeper reforms, particularly around capital management, and continue to suppress dividends under the guise of conservatism or future M&A,' said Jonathan Pines, head of Asia ex-Japan at Federated Hermes.
Recent market volatility is still fresh in investor's minds as well after the political turmoil around the previous president's declaration of martial law in December. With a further drag from Trump's tariffs, the Kospi slumped about 13% over two weeks into April.
Still, Preskett sees the Korea story as a strong long-term investment theme, noting that the new government has pledged fiscal reforms that should also help the consumer and banking sectors.
'For us, it is the start of a journey,' he said. 'We feel that it's tip of the iceberg in terms of flows and potential revaluation.' (Bloomberg)

‘Golden time to invest': Shinhan FDI unit targets global investors

From distressed assets to supply chain shifts, Korea gains appeal amid global uncertainty While South Korea faces headwinds from heightened uncertainty in the trade environment, Shinhan FDI partners, a specialized unit dedicated to providing support for foreign direct investment here, sees opportunities in challenges that lie ahead. 'Now is the golden time to invest in Korea,' said Jenny Hong, one member of the global investment support team of Shinhan FDI partners. Distinct from other forms of cross-border investment ― such as purchasing stocks and bonds ― foreign direct investment involves active asset management, including acquiring physical assets like factories or gaining management control of a company. 'The sluggish Korean economy is a favorable factor. With the local won weakening against the dollar, Korean assets are currently undervalued,' Hong explained. Foreign investors are also eyeing opportunities in distressed assets. For instance, overseas hedge funds are weighing to invest in the logistics sector through nonperforming loans, as the industry struggles with the fallout from collapsed project financing deals. Similar to its peers, Shinhan Bank plays a key role in facilitating inbound investment, as foreign investors have to report their investments to the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency or foreign exchange banks under the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act. Previously, the specialized workforce supporting investments was scattered across various departments within the bank. The lender launched a centralized unit last month to streamline its services. 'With the rising complexity of deals, there was a clear need for a more coordinated approach. These days, we are seeing increasingly intricate stakeholder dynamics,' Hong said. 'Multiple parties are involved, ranging from private equity firms to joint ventures and other entities. Coordinating among all these stakeholders requires a more integrated approach." With the US, Japan and China being the three largest players in foreign direct investment for Korea, the team has regional experts dedicated to handling each market. Hong specializes in English-speaking firms, while Yang Zou and Ayako Yamoto focus on Chinese and Japanese firms, respectively. According to Yang, a growing number of Chinese companies are turning their attention to Korea as a potential detour around trade restrictions imposed by the US. 'With the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and the introduction of 'reciprocal' tariffs, Chinese investors are looking to mitigate risks by importing raw materials from China and manufacturing in Korea. This trend is driving increased investment in factory construction here,' Yang said. Yamoto has been working with an increasing number of consumer-oriented Japanese firms, as consumer preferences between Japan and Korea continue to align. 'While earlier investments primarily targeted business-to-business transactions, recent trends indicate a shift toward business-to-consumer models. An increasing number of consumer-oriented Japanese firms ― particularly those in the food and entertainment sectors ― are now eyeing the Korean market,' she said. The three "foreign corporate client relationship managers" highlighted that navigating offshore investors through the differing trade environment is the key mission for Shinhan FDI partners. 'There is a difference in investment practices across countries. For instance, some countries do not use seal imprints, whereas in Korea, corporate transactions require an official seal,' Hong said. Account opening procedures vary by country as well. 'When establishing a company in China, the process typically involves setting up the company first and then making the capital contribution afterward. In contrast, in Korea, the capital must be deposited first before the company is officially put on paper,' Yang said. 'From a Chinese investor's perspective, Korea's approach can be unsettling since the funds have to be secured before a company is established. It is my job to explain the process sufficiently.' While Korea has experienced a dip in the amount of pledged foreign direct investments this year, largely due to political uncertainty from the end of last year, the team projects the pace to pick up with increased clarity following the recent presidential election. In the first half of this year, foreign direct investment pledges to Korea totaled $13.1 billion, a decrease of 14.6 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the Trade Ministry. While actual FDI arrivals increased by 2.7 percent to $7.3 billion, the drop in pledged investments is still significant because it may signal reduced investor confidence and could impact future capital inflows. 'With the political uncertainty resolved, we anticipate increased interest from foreign investors. We are already receiving inquiries from potential investors,' Hong said. 'More foreign direct investment in Korea means more seed money for the country's economic growth. From a macroeconomic perspective, we find meaning in our work by financially supporting the nation's development. From another standpoint, we work to safeguard our clients by ensuring protection of their investments."

Mercedes-Benz opens world's first Maybach Brand Center in Seoul

Korea surpasses 10,000 Maybach units sold — trailing only US, China Mercedes-Benz has opened the world's first Maybach Brand Center in Seoul as the German luxury automaker emphasizes the importance of the Korean market for its top-end brand. 'With the opening of the world's first Maybach Brand Center, we are taking the next step in redefining customer experience at the highest level,' said Mathias Geisen, Mercedes-Benz board member in charge of marketing and sales, during the opening ceremony of the new facility on Monday. 'Korea is not only one of our key markets — it is also a place where the spirit of modern luxury is deeply appreciated and constantly evolving. This new space is our response: a place where exclusivity, craftsmanship and personal connection come together in a way only Mercedes-Maybach can offer.' The five-story, 2,795-square-meter Maybach-only building is located in Apgujeong in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. This premium retail district is home to major high-end global brands, as well as the Galleria Luxury Hall East and West department stores featuring luxury fashion brands. According to Mercedes-Benz, the exterior of the Maybach Brand Center sought to reinterpret the country's traditional design heritage to create a contemporary and timeless architectural language. Its pleated surface and curved roofline drew inspiration from Korea's traditional clothing and housing, Hanbok and Hanok. Inside the building, a cathedral-type interior with a high ceiling gives the first floor a feeling of grandness. To celebrate the center's opening, Mercedes-Benz launched three Korea-only limited edition models of the Mercedes-Maybach Silver Lining -- 10 units of the S-Class, a GLS and an EQS SUV. The all-new Mercedes-Maybach SL, an ultra-luxurious two-seater convertible, was also showcased for the first time in the country. According to Mercedes-Benz Korea, the Maybach Brand Center will operate on a reservation-only basis, with each customer welcomed by a dedicated sales consultant and product expert upon arrival. The new facility will offer exclusive membership services, professional valet parking, signature food and beverages, and a variety of personalized programs tailored specifically for Mercedes-Maybach owners. 'Since its official debut in 2004 in Korea, Mercedes-Maybach has become the preferred choice for Korea's distinguished leaders, visionary entrepreneurs, and cultural icons -- those who seek impeccable quality and profound expression of success and dignity,' said Mathias Vaitl, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Korea. 'We are privileged that more than 10,000 customers have chosen Mercedes-Maybach, marking Korea as one of the most important Maybach markets globally. We are confident that the new Maybach Brand Center will exceed the expectations of our valued customers.' Despite its relatively smaller market size, Korea was the third best-selling market for Maybach last year behind the US and China as it sold 1,363 units. Since its launch in 2004, Mercedes-Benz Korea logged a record-high of 2,596 Maybach vehicles sold in the country in 2023. The high-end brand announced in November 2024 that Maybach sales had surpassed the 10,000 milestone. Although Mercedes-Benz operates Maybach Atelier, the first brand concept center and showroom established in 2022, in Shanghai, China, Mercedes-Benz Korea noted that the newly opened center is unique worldwide as the brand's only showroom in which an entire building has been dedicated solely to the Maybach brand.
