ASEAN, Norway Chart Path Forward With 2026-2030 Plan

JAKARTA, June 13 (Bernama) -- ASEAN and Norway have pledged to strengthen cooperation under a new 2026–2030 action plan.
In a statement on Friday, the ASEAN Secretariat said Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn's working visit to Oslo this week at the invitation of the Norwegian government, demonstrated the depth of ASEAN-Norway ties over the past decade and reaffirmed both sides' commitment to strengthening the partnership.

The ASEAN Secretariat said the visit underscored the growing and multifaceted cooperation between ASEAN and Norway since the formalisation of the Sectoral Dialogue Partnership in 2015.
According to the statement, both parties looked forward to the finalisation of the ASEAN-Norway Practical Cooperation Areas (2026-2030).
'It is ambitious yet practical and implementable, and will serve as a framework for tangible cooperation in the years ahead,' it said.
The ASEAN Secretariat said ASEAN and Norway also shared the commitment to further strengthening cooperation on sustainable ocean management and green transition, trade and investment, as well as on peace and conflict management and human rights.
While in Oslo, Kao held talks with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, and Trade and Industry Minister Cecilie Myrseth on regional and global developments, trade and investment, and joint efforts on sustainable ocean governance and the blue economy.
Both sides reaffirmed their support for a rules-based international order and committed to advancing practical cooperation under the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific as well as the importance of ASEAN Centrality and inclusive regional frameworks.

M'sia urges global pressure to halt Israeli strikes on Iran
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has called on Israel's partners, especially those with influence and leverage, to apply maximum pressure to halt further aggression in the wake of Israeli military strikes on Iran. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a Facebook post yesterday, strongly condemned the attacks which began overnight, describing them as grave and reckless acts that risk destabilising the fragile region further. According to media reports, the Israeli regime has carried out strikes in and near the Iranian capital Teheran, as well as other cities in the country, targeting military installations and nuclear facilities. Iranian official media reported that the strikes killed civilians as well as senior Iranian leaders, including the country's powerful Revolutionary Guards chief Hossein Salami. Also killed were Armed Forces chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri, and at least six Iranian nuclear scientists. International wires also reported that unconfirmed images and footage began to appear on social media showing plumes of smoke rising from several locations along Teheran's skyline. During remarks to reporters later, Anwar said Malaysia will send a representative to attend a United Nations conference that aims to discuss a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. 'Any country has the right to attend and express their views, particularly regarding justice for Palestine and Gaza,' Anwar told reporters when met after Friday prayers in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. 'I support the initiative by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia (who is also the Prime Minister), Mohammed bin Salman, and French President Emmanuel Macron,' he said, referring to the meet in New York next week. France and Saudi Arabia are reported to be the main organisers of the conference, with Paris said to be considering the unilateral recognition of Palestine as a state. The Prime Minister was asked to respond to comments by US President Donald Trump, who warned governments not to attend the conference. Trump had reportedly said that any country adopting a stance against Israel would be considered contrary to US foreign policy and could face diplomatic repercussions.

Media council law takes effect today
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Media Council Act 2025 comes into effect today after Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ) signed the gazette yesterday. The Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024, which will move the local mass media industry towards self-regulation, was passed in Dewan Rakyat on Feb 26. The Act comes into effect as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim attends the National Journalists Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration today as a special guest amid the gathering of some 1,000 local and foreign journalists. Organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency, Hawana 2025 features a variety of activities. On June 3, Fahmi reportedly said that new developments regarding the Malaysian Media Council are expected to be announced during the Hawana 2025 Summit. He said the council was established to defend media freedom, ensure fair and responsible reporting, and serve as a channel for the public to voice complaints against the media in a civil manner.

MCMC often approached for help and assists all, no matter their status
KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will continue assisting individuals and organisations facing issues related to access or content on their social media accounts. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that MCMC is committed to helping all affected users regardless of their status by reaching out directly to social media platforms on their behalf. 'From time to time, MCMC or even myself will be approached by individuals or organisations that have had their accounts affected,' he said. Fahmi was speaking to reporters after attending the Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia (GKMM) 2025 Dinner held in conjunction with the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration here tonight. Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the HAWANA 2025 Project Director, and Bernama's senior management. Fahmi also confirmed that Meta Platforms Inc (Meta) had clarified the status of Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir's Facebook account, which had recently lost all its posts dating back to 2022.
