Former S Korea President Moon Jae-in indicted for bribery

BBC News24-04-2025

Prosecutors have indicted former South Korean President Moon Jae-in on charges of bribery related to his former son-in-law's job at an airline.Prosecutors argue his former son-in-law, identified only by his surname Seo, had little experience in the aviation industry but was hired in exchange for the airline's CEO leading a state-funded agency.Moon led the country from 2017 to 2022 and is best remembered for his attempts to broker a peace deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He joins a long list of South Korean presidents whose political careers have been marred by scandal, from jail to assassination to suicide.
Former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office this month for his shock martial law declaration, is also facing criminal charges. Besides Moon, former lawmaker Lee Sang-jik has also been indicted, prosecutors say. He is being accused of bribery and breach of trust. In 2022, Lee was sentenced to six years in prison for embezzling company funds. The founder of budget carrier Eastar Jet, Lee was named the head of the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency in 2018 - the same year that Seo was appointed executive director of his airline's subsidiary Thai Eastar Jet.Between 2018 and 2020, Seo received around 217 million won ($150,000; £113,000) in salary and housing support - a sum that prosecutors say constitute bribes intended for Moon.According to prosecutors, Seo was appointed "despite any relevant experience or qualifications in the airline industry", said a Reuters report. He "frequently left his post for extended periods... and did not perform his duties in a manner befitting the position", it added. The residence of Moon Da-hye, the former president's daughter, was raided last September during investigations of the bribery allegations.Moon's indictment comes amid a series of prosecutions against officials in his administration. Earlier this month, Moon's former national security advisor and defence minister were indicted for allegedly leaking intelligence to activists. The country's prosecution service is often accused of being politicised – and when the government changes hands, it's common for rival politicians to be investigated. The current government is led by acting president and prime minister Han Duck-soo the People Power Party's. Moon's Democratic Party has condemned the prosection, calling it a "politically motivated move aimed at humiliating a former president".

Patrick Loxdale: Everyone can play a footnote in history

When President Kennedy said 'We choose to go to the Moon…and do the other things, not because they are easy but because they are hard' he drove American aspiration. He also openly challenged school children to prepare themselves to become tomorrow's leaders. Despite being on the left of US politics, he realised the importance of individuals grasping opportunity and working hard to be their best; to make their lives and their families and their country better. He understood the balance between individual responsibility and the role of the state.

Is South Korea's new firebrand president up to the job?

Much akin to Britain on 4 July last year, South Korea is now veering leftwards. Seoul only had a protracted two-and-a-half, and not fourteen, years of conservative rule by a leader who declared martial law on a cold winter evening last December. But at a time when security in East Asia is increasingly precarious, the election of Lee Jae-myung as South Korea's fourteenth president does not bode well for the future if the firebrand's past statements are anything to go by. For a man who had ambitions to be as 'successful as Bernie Sanders' – a comparison which is hardly a point of pride – it was third time lucky. His failed presidential bids in 2017 and 2022 are now confined to the history books. The South Korean population voted for change after six months of polarising protests in support of and against Lee's infamous predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol. These were triggered by his abortive declaration of martial law on 3 December. This election was overshadowed by that December day, without which there would have been no vote.

Tottenham will only let captain Son Heung-min leave for significant fee

Son was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia two years ago, but rejected advances to stick around for the start of Ange Postecoglou's tenure. Postecoglou subsequently named Son as Spurs captain and last month the South Korean forward led the team to Europa League success to achieve his goal of winning silverware at the club. International grind 🔥 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 4, 2025 Speculation over Son's future has been rife during his 10th season at Tottenham and whilst the club triggered a 12-month option in his deal in January, he is set to enter the final year of his contract in July. Son will also turn 33 next month and was affected by injury problems during the 2024-25 campaign, but the Premier League club will only let their talismanic skipper leave for a significant transfer fee, PA understands. Spurs are set to visit South Korea again later this summer for pre-season – the third time in four years they have travelled to Son's homeland to prepare for a new campaign. Even though Son – who is currently on international duty – only managed 11 goals last term, which is his lowest return since his debut season, his global status offers enormous commercial value to the club. Son is not the only key figure with an uncertain future with no clarity over head coach Postecoglou, who remains in the dark as to whether he will get a third season at Tottenham.
