TOKYO — A sudden suspension of the sole train to Japan's Expo 2025 stranded more than 30,000 visitors, with some forced to spend a sweltering night near the station and more than 30 people sent to hospitals by Thursday morning.
A power outage abruptly shut the metro line in Osaka on Wednesday night while a crowd was packed into the Expo site's station.
As of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, around 30,000 people were stranded, the Expo organizer said.
"So many people were packing the station that it felt like a steam bath," an elderly woman told local broadcaster MBS news.
Many, including families with children, wound up sleeping on benches under the Expo's wooden "Grand Ring" or inside pavilions turned into shelters.

It took the Osaka Metro around eight hours to restore the Chuo line's service, with trains not fully operational until early Thursday morning.
By then, 36 people had been sent to hospitals for symptoms including headaches and dizziness, according to the Expo organizer.

Bowing deeply, Osaka Metro officials apologized for "causing immense trouble" to those affected, blaming a short-circuit for the outage.
Japan has been suffering a punishing summer heatwave, recording its hottest July since records began in 1898.
Osaka last hosted the Expo in 1970 when it attracted 64 million people, a record until Shanghai in 2010.
Last month, Expo organizers reported welcoming 10 million visitors, with the fair running until October. — Agence France-Presse

Electric 'air taxis' could debut in Japan from 2027

TOKYO, Japan - Airline ANA said Thursday that, together with a US startup, it hopes to have electric "air taxis" whizzing over Japan from as early as 2027. ANA and California-based Joby Aviation said they will establish a joint venture with a view to deploying more than 100 of the five-seater aircraft. Flying taxis will "revolutionize our air mobility", Koji Shibata, president and CEO of ANA, said in a statement Tuesday. An ANA spokesman told AFP on Thursday that the aircraft, designed to carry a pilot and up to four passengers at speeds of up to 200 mph (320km/h), could be in service from as early as 2027. The project primarily envisages trips between Narita and Haneda airports and Tokyo, although the routes can diversify in the future. Currently, a car or train ride between central Tokyo and Narita typically takes an hour or longer, but Joby's five-seater can shorten this to around 15 minutes, ANA said. There are no price details yet, but ANA wants to make the service as affordable as possible for the general public, a spokesman told AFP. ANA and Joby will make a public flight demonstration of the vehicles at the Osaka Expo in October. "Where ancient wisdom, legendary craftsmanship and soaring ambition converge -- that's Japan", said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation. "And that makes it an extraordinary launchpad for redefining the future of air mobility". Joby's aircraft lift off like a helicopter, then transition to fly forward like a plane "with minimal acoustic impact and zero operating emissions", according to the firm. In December, flying taxi startup Volocopter said it was filing for insolvency, days after another German company in the field, Lilium, was saved from collapse. Volocopter had been aiming to enter the market in 2025 with its two-seater "Volocity" electric air taxi model. It suffered a setback when it had to cancel test flights during the Paris Olympic Games in 2024 at short notice after the certification for its aircraft engine didn't come through in time. —Agence France-Presse

PH Pavilion at Expo 2025 on track to hit 600,000 visitors

OSAKA, Japan — The Philippine Pavilion at the ongoing Expo 2025 is on track to hit 600,000 visitors soon, organizers said. 'Inaasahan natin na sa mga tatlong buwan pang darating mas marami pang bibisita kasi by word of mouth yung mga nakaranas nitong Philippine Pavilion magku-kwento whether dayuhan sila o mga Filipino nagkuwento yan kung gaano kaganda yung ating pinapamahagi na karanasan doon sa ating pavilion,' Consul General Voltaire Mauricio of the Philippine Consulate General in Osaka said in an interview with GMA Integrated News. (We expect that in the next three months, more people will visit because by word of mouth, those who have experienced the Philippine Pavilion will tell stories, whether they are foreigners or Filipinos, about how wonderful the experience at our pavilion is). It is hard to miss the Philippine Pavilion wrapped in a facade made of rattan handcrafted by Filipino artisans. On its side, you can see the vibrant textiles from various regions of the archipelago, another way to showcase the country's rich weaving heritage and indigenous artistry. Despite the sweltering summer here in Japan, people line up every day to gain access to the pavilion and experience the best of the Philippines. Inside the pavilion, one will have a glimpse of all regions through a handwoven map and a monitor showcasing the highlights and treasures of every destination. In its center is a giant motion-reactive screen where visitors can dance and watch their movements create artistic visuals simultaneously. Next to the interactive screen, visitors need to line up again for the in-demand AI photo booths and pose beside digital representations of tropical fish, fruits, flowers, leaves, and corals. Photo: Ian Cruz/GMA Integrated News A section of the pavilion offers Hilot, the traditional Filipino massage now gaining popularity among foreign visitors as they leave refreshed after going through the healing touch of Filipino wellness practitioners. Before exiting the pavilion are the souvenir shops with distinct Filipino products such as unique delicacies and crafts. Photo: Ian Cruz/GMA Integrated News The pavilion's Hain restaurant also draws long queues because of the sumptuous Lumpiang Binondo, Lechon Bisaya, and other entrees and snacks. For dessert, halo-halo is one of the main attractions. 'By them being invited and experiencing our small communities, our places of destination, we're not only imparting something that's worthless but something that's priceless; these are the personal relationships being created, crafted, and developed when they visit our communities,' Mauricio said.
