Report: Cowboys G Rob Jones (neck) out 2-3 months

CNAa day ago
Dallas Cowboys guard Rob Jones will be sidelined 2-3 months after breaking a bone in his neck during practice, ESPN reported Monday.
Jones, a candidate for the starting spot at left guard, was hurt late in Sunday's session at training camp in Oxnard, Calif. An MRI and other testing revealed the injury, which will not require surgery, per the report.
Jones, 26, signed a one-year deal for $3.7 million in March.
He started all 17 games at left guard for Miami last season, bringing his career totals with the Dolphins to 49 games and 30 starts since arriving as an undrafted free agent in 2021.
Rookie first-round draft pick Tyler Booker has taken most of the snaps with the first team at left guard so far during training camp.

Latham out injured, Santner to lead NZ v Zimbabwe in opening test

New Zealand captain Tom Latham will miss the opening test against Zimbabwe with a shoulder injury and Mitch Santner will step in to lead the side, New Zealand Cricket said on the eve of the match beginning in Bulawayo on Wednesday. Latham suffered the injury while fielding during a T20 match for Birmingham in the Vitality Blast earlier this month and has not recovered sufficiently to be included in the playing 11, the NZC said. Latham will stay in Zimbabwe with New Zealand hoping he will be fit for the second test starting on Aug. 7. "It's hugely disappointing for Tom to be missing the first test, as captain but also as an integral part of the team," head coach Rob Walter said. "It's never great when you lose your captain, who's a world-class opening batter and a great team man, but that said we're going to work really hard to have him available for the second test. "We'll continue to assess and see whether a replacement player is necessary, but at this stage we are hopeful that he'll recover in time." White-ball captain Santner oversaw New Zealand's T20 tri-series victory in Harare where they remained undefeated throughout the five-match series. "Mitch did a wonderful job with the T20 squad in this recent series," Walter said. "He was excellent from a strategy point of view and he has a strong understanding of the game. "Whilst the format is different, he certainly has the respect of the players and will be supported by some highly experienced test cricketers, so I trust that he's going to do a great job."

Singapore's Matin Ilhan signs with Portugal's Leixoes SC, eyes SEA Games 2025

SINGAPORE: In an encouraging and positive development for Singapore's football, an increasing number of young players have ventured out of their comfort zone to pursue their dreams in European leagues, with Portugal emerging as a hotspot, to hone their skills and gain valuable experience. The latest footballer to make the move to Portugal is Matin Ilhan, who has signed for Leixoes Sport Club for the upcoming 2025 – 2026 season. The 22-year-old winger officially signed his professional football contract with Leixoes on Jun 3 and has set his sights on representing the Singapore U22 national team at the year-end Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand. 'I am thankful for all the support I have received from my family, coaches, and teammates, and I hope I can continue improving to live up to their expectations. It is every footballer's dream to have an opportunity to play in Europe, and I am grateful for this opportunity to grow and become a better player in Portugal,' expressed Matin, whose passion for football began with futsal at age five. Matin's professional career reflects the aspirations of a Singaporean youth who has chosen to pursue his dream of developing in the sport that he loves, demonstrating that with hard work and the right opportunities, young players can grow beyond the local limitations to reach their full potential. 'One day, I hope to realise my other dream of representing Singapore on the international stage and show the world what Singaporean players are capable of,' added Matin, who previously gained first-team training experience while playing for the U21 teams of Tanjong Pagar United and Lion City Sailors. As Matin embarks on this new chapter with Leixoes, he aims to not only advance his professional career in Portugal but also to contribute to the Singapore football scene. Leixoes are currently playing in Liga Portugal 2, the second-tier of Portugal's professional football league. The club is managed by 36-year-old João Nuno Fonseca, who took over earlier in the month from former manager Cristiano Brito. The club, which played its home games at Estadio do Mar, ended the 2024 – 2025 league season in 13th spot in the 18-team league on 41 points, with a record of 10 wins, 11 draws, and 13 losses, while scoring 37 goals and conceding 42 goals. The new season will begin on Aug 9, and Leixoes will play host to FC Felgueiras the following day in their first match of the season. Leixoes SC manager Joa Nuno Fonseca. (Photo: Facebook screengrab / leixoessad) European Football Dream Starts Young During the early days when he was enjoying the sport, Matin trained at LFA Academy, and subsequently, he sharpened his technical skills when he moved to Chelsea Football Club's Soccer School Singapore. Matin's abilities on the field also proved to be a level above his schoolmates when he was selected to play for the Anglo-Chinese School's (International) U16 age-group team when he was just 13 years old. He later represented Saint Gabriel's in the U15 COE and B Division, finishing as the league's third-highest scorer before COVID cut the season short. The pandemic did not stop Martin from continuing his love for football and development on the field, as he later joined Euro Soccer Academy prior to his stint at Tanjong Pagar and the Sailors. Seizing the opportunity in Portugal Two years ago, Matin's football journey reached a turning point as he took a leap of faith and moved to Portugal after he earned a trial through the Individual Football Training Asia. Since then, he has been immersed in a competitive and merit-driven environment that prioritises player development and pushes him to grow both technically and mentally. 'Matin has impressed me with how quickly he has adapted to the intensity of Portuguese football. While he has the technical gift to excel, he has always supplemented that with hard work and eagerness to learn. This has led to his signing with the club, and we are excited to see how he utilises and develops his skillsets with us,' commented André Castro, president of Leixões SC. His journey from the day he showed an interest in football until he fulfilled his dream of joining a European football club was significantly boosted by the unwavering support of his parents, who have been instrumental in nurturing his love for football. 'We are incredibly proud of Matin and his courage to chase his dreams in Europe. The journey ahead will not be easy, but we believe that Matin has always given his best and will continue to do so while staying focused on his goals,' shared Matin's dad, Faizal Basheer. 'As parents, it brings us great joy to see him pursue what he loves, and we will continue to support him as he grows in this journey.' Matin's professional career reflects the aspirations of a Singaporean youth who has chosen to pursue his dream of developing in the sport that he loves, demonstrating that with hard work and the right opportunities, young players are able to grow beyond the local limitations to reach their full potential. Matin is among a growing group of young Singaporean players testing themselves in Portugal. Those who have made the move to Portugal include players such as Nur Muhammad Asis, Khairin Nadim, Aymann Aris, Krishav Ram, and Jonan Tan, reflecting a rising interest among Singapore's youth to develop in Europe.

McLaughlin-Levrone 400m flat foray a highlight for US trials

NEW YORK :Hurdles queen Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone wants to carve out new territory in the 400 metres flat as the U.S. track and field trials kick off this week in Eugene, Oregon, with a ticket to the World Athletics Championships on the line. She broke the 400m hurdles world record for an astonishing sixth time for her second straight Olympic title in Paris last year and hopes to bring home world gold in the flat event at the global showcase in Tokyo in September. She has slowly chipped away at the event after teasing her interest three years ago, becoming the second-fastest American ever with 48.74 seconds in Eugene in 2023 and winning at that same springy Hayward Field track earlier this month in 49.43. "This is just a great indicator for us, moving forward, so a lot to work on, a lot to go and look back at," McLaughlin-Levrone said after the most recent win. "It's not as daunting as it once was." With reigning champions like Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson guaranteed entry into the men's and women's 100m at worlds, McLaughlin-Levrone's 400m flat attempt injects some drama into an otherwise straightforward U.S. trials. Both Lyles and Richardson have declared for the sprint double in Eugene, though only Lyles has the bye into worlds in the 200m after taking that title in 2023, as well. Richardson can expect to see the 200m Olympic champion Gabby Thomas at the line in both events, after Thomas has kept up a busy schedule with Grand Slam Track this year, while the back-to-back men's 200m Olympic silver medallist Kenny Bednarek will feature on the men's side. Another highlight will come with the women's 800m, where the sentimental favourite Athing Mu-Nikolayev will hope to get her comeback story on track after stunningly failing to make the U.S. Olympic team a year ago at trials. The 23-year-old had been favoured to repeat in her signature event at the Paris Games but instead tripped and crashed to the track at Hayward Field. It was later revealed that she had a hamstring injury in the lead-up to the selection event. She ran her first 800m in almost a year at the Prefontaine Classic earlier this month, finishing a disappointing 10th in 2:03.44. "I'm glad I made it through the race," she told Citius Mag after the race, saying that she felt physically ready to compete at the U.S. trials.
