In a statement issued by the Media Cell Bilawal House, Chairman PPP, in his message on the 48th anniversary of the coup against Prime Minister Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's elected government, said that Quaid-e-Awam had given voice to the voiceless, pride to the poor, and power to the people. 'The coup on July 5 was an attempt to silence that voice, to crush that pride, and to reverse that power. But the dream lived on—in the hearts of the people, and through the blood of martyrs,' he added.
Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that the dictatorship that followed unleashed a reign of terror, religious exploitation, and systematic dismantling of democratic institutions—scars that Pakistan still bears to this day. 'The seeds of extremism, sectarianism, and intolerance were sown by the regime that hijacked Pakistan in the darkness of that night,' he added.
Chairman PPP reiterated his resolve to continue the struggle for the vision of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto—a Pakistan where the people are sovereign, where the Constitution reigns supreme, and where no power is above the Parliament and the ballot box.
'The Pakistan Peoples Party has withstood lashes, prisons, hangings, and martyrdom—but we have never compromised on our principles. The struggle continues until Pakistan becomes the democratic, peaceful, and prosperous country that Shaheed Bhutto envisioned,' he added.

Unjust police certificates stigmatise acquitted citizens: LHC
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has recently observed that issuing a police character (PS) certificate reflecting a criminal history of an accused despite his acquittal by a court of law in an FIR violates the individual's constitutionally protected right. The court said such a practice not only violates the individual's protected right to human dignity but also imposes a lasting and unjust stigma upon a citizen who has been exonerated through due judicial process. The court said, once an accused has been acquitted by a competent court of law, he is to be considered, treated and regarded as innocent person under the law. Despite a conclusive acquittal of an accused any continuous reference or inclusion of the relevant FIR in official documents like police character certificate is unwarranted, the court observed. The court passed this order in a petition of Abdur Rehman Faryad challenging issuance of a PC certificate mentioning his name in the FIR despite his acquittal by a competent court of law. The court said the petitioner is entitled to a PC certificate that reflects his acquittal and the absence of any subsisting criminal liability. The court said the allegations levelled against the petitioner do not involve moral turpitude, nor do they relate to any offence against the State. The court said it would be legally unjustified to draw any adverse inference or attach any stigma to the petitioner merely based on the registration of an FIR. The court; therefore, directed the Home Secretary Punjab to ensure the issuance of a PC certificate in favour of the petitioner, which accurately reflects his present legal status. The said certificate shall exclude and omit any reference whatsoever to FIR registered at Police Station Nawan Kot, Lahore, in the light of the petitioner's lawful acquittal and the absence of any existing criminal liability, the court added. The court noted that law enforcement agencies have the administrative authority to maintain internal records of reported incidents, including FIRs, for various legitimate purposes. The court said the retention of such data, so long as it is confined to lawful administrative use and is not disclosed or misused in a manner prejudicial to the rights of the individual and cannot be construed as a violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution. The court; therefore, directed the office to transmit copy of the court order to the Inspector General of Police Punjab and the Chief Secretary Punjab, to ensure its strict implementation in light of the court's directions and observations. FY25 audit report: Concerns voiced over non-independence of AGP Office
ISLAMABAD: The Audit Report for 2024–25 has raised serious concerns over the continued non-independence of the Office of the Attorney-General for Pakistan (AGP), despite explicit directives issued by the prime minister nearly seven years ago. The report highlights that the AGP, a constitutional office under Article 100 of the Constitution, continues to operate as an attached department of the Ministry of Law and Justice rather than as a separate division, as mandated. According to the report, the Prime Minister's Office, via Letter No 658/SAPM/2018 dated May 30, 2018, approved in principle the reorganisation of the AGP's office as an independent division. The directive also sought to provide legal cover to the AGP's role in the appointment of law officers. However, auditors found that these orders have yet to be implemented, which, they noted, undermines the constitutional status of the Attorney-General's office. The audit report termed this continued subordination of the AGP to the Law Division a violation of the prime minister's order and recommended immediate corrective measures to ensure compliance with both the Constitution and the PM's directive. In its response to the audit, the AGP Office acknowledged that a similar observation was made in the 2018–19 and 2019–20 audit cycles. It stated that the matter was taken up with the Law and Justice Division and subsequently, referred to the Cabinet Division for a final decision. The case remains pending. A Departmental Accounts Committee (DAC) meeting held on February 6, 2025, directed that the issue be referred to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for further deliberation. The auditors have recommended that immediate steps be taken to formalise the AGP's independent status in line with constitutional provisions and the prime minister's instructions. Govt begins regional Jirgas for tribal peace
A tribal jirga on Saturday once again urged the federal government to arrange for a delegation comprising representatives of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government and tribal elders to engage in dialogue with Afghanistan. The jirga hosted by K-P Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur also noted that military operations and displacement of local populations are not acceptable under any circumstances. According to an official statement, this was the first in a series of jirgas planned to be held under the auspices of the K-P government at addressing peace and security issues. Tribal elders and elected representatives from Khyber and Orakzai districts, as well as from the tribal sub-divisions of Darra Adam Khel and Hassan Khel, participated in the gathering. The jirga was attended by 150 tribal elders and leaders, six members of the provincial assembly, three members of the National Assembly, and one senator. Senior government officials including Adviser to the Chief Minister on Information Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, and K-P Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed were present at the event, alongside relevant commissioners, deputy commissioners, and senior officers. In a unanimous resolution, the jirga stated that there is complete unity among all stakeholders in the fight against terrorism and terrorists for the restoration of peace. However, military operations and the displacement of local populations are not acceptable. It said development is linked to peace, and once peace is restored, the pace of development must accelerate. The tribal elders recommended that the federal government arrange for a delegation to engage in dialogue with Afghanistan. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur had summoned a jirga of tribal elders in Peshawar following the killing of some protesters in Tirah last week. Five people died and 17 others sustained injuries on June 27 when protesters were fired upon during a protest outside a military installation at the Bagh Maidan area of Tirah Valley of the Khyber district against the killing of a girl. After the incident, the K-P government announced Rs10 million each in compensation for those killed and Rs2.5 million for each of the injured. The provincial government stated that it stood in solidarity with the affected families. PTI's K-P Organizational Committee, in an emergency meeting last week, strongly condemned ongoing "state violence" against peaceful citizens across the K-P, especially in the merged districts, which constituted the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) till early 2018. The committee unanimously asserted that extended military deployment under Article 245 of the Constitution has created an unchecked environment of force and ineffective accountability, violating basic rights and disrupting local peace.
