Final call for young musicians to enter contest in Wales
Royal composer, Paul Mealor, believes the Pendine Young Musician of Wales competition at the North Wales International Music Festival could be a substantial boost to their budding careers. The competition, now in its second year, is seeking entries from instrumentalists and singers for the 2025 contest, to be held at St Asaph Cathedral from September 11 to 20. Professor Mealor said: "It's not too late for young musicians to enter the competition – there's still a few weeks left. "We've already had a load of entries but we want to make sure we reach out to rising stars in every corner of Wales." Young instrumentalists or vocalists must upload a video or audio clip and complete an application form by the deadline at 5pm on Friday, July 4. More details on how to enter can be found on the festival's website, The competition is being funded by the Pendine Park care organisation through the Pendine Arts and Community Trust, which supports community and arts activities. The winner will receive the silver Pendine Trophy along with a cash prize of £2,000. The second-place winner will receive £1,000, and two runners-up will each receive £500. All four finalists' performances will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Cymru. Professor Mealor said: "It's a very special competition that can launch a career and we're indebted to Pendine Park for sponsoring it." The judges, who will choose the finalists, are Professor Helena Gaunt, principal of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama; Rebecca Evans CBE, a world-renowned operatic soprano; and Alun Jones, the festival's executive vice-chair and former principal of Chetham's School of Music, Manchester. While the judges deliberate, last year's winner, harp virtuoso Heledd Wynn Newton from Cardiff, will entertain the audience. Professor Mealor said: "The people who reach the final will all win a generous cash prize while the winner will be presented with a magnificent silver salver donated by Pendine and be invited to perform next year as well. "The competition is open to young musicians either born or living in Wales or who are Welsh nationals living abroad. "Entrants must have been aged under 21 on January 1, 2025, to be eligible. "If you're under 18 you will need the permission of your teacher or parent to enter." Mario Kreft, organiser of the competition, said: "After the success of the inaugural competition last year, we're really excited about the prospects for the 2025 contest. "Our aim is to encourage and foster young, emerging talent and the Pendine Young Musician of Wales competition has all the makings of a very prestigious event. "We recognise how important the arts are to our lives in all its forms. "Music matters just as much to people who live and work in social care as it does to young and old in wider society."

Ali Bastian shares candid health update following breast cancer journey
Ali Bastian, who has been in soaps Hollyoaks and Doctors, had a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy following her stage II breast cancer diagnosis last year Former Hollyoaks star Ali Bastian said her body is "under construction" as she opened up about her cancer journey. After Ali was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer last year, the 42-year-old actress underwent gruelling chemotherapy and had a mastectomy. However, she delighted fans in March this year by revealing she had overcome the disease, statistically the most common cancer in the UK. Speaking in a podcast this week, Ali said: "I couldn't have a reconstruction at the time because we always knew I'd have to have radiotherapy. At some point there'll be some kind of something. "Initially I was like 100 per cent it's happening. But now, I want to have the conversations and talk through what the options are, but I'm not actually married to any of them at the moment." The actress, who portrayed Becca Dean in Hollyoaks from 2001 to 2007, gave the update on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast, presented by Giovanna Fletcher. Giovanna, 40, asked Ali how she handled her recovery so far, to which Ali said: "In some ways better than I would have imagined actually, even the sort of gearing up for a mastectomy. I've got a really good prosthetic that makes a big difference. It means in clothes I feel normal. It's bright pink. It makes me happy. "It's just very different to the lump of silicone that you get handed in the hospital, which is a hell of a moment. This is a lot lighter and easy to wear. I quite like that it doesn't look like a chicken fillet, like a pretend boob. It's something that I could show the kids as well because it's so visually appealing." Ali had a regular role in BBC soap Doctors in 2019 but left to have her first of two children, both of whom are girls. Since starting a family, she hasn't had a majpr acting credit but she told Giovanna she is looking to the future. The star, from Windsor, Berkshire, added: "I just keep saying to myself really 'I'm still under construction, I've been through a lot, I'm healing at the moment.'" The soap star, who came third in the 2009 series of Strictly Come Dancing, lost her mum in 2023, one year before the cancer journey started. Earlier this year, Ali, who has also been in The Bill, told fans her mum had a short illness. "Grief, I attempted to put on hold whilst I managed a grueling treatment regime now comes in waves, sometimes crashing, sometimes tidal, rarely gentle… but I try to go gently with myself as I navigate life after cancer and life without you," Ali penned on social media in April.

Sporting glam makeup she wore her high-lighted stresses in loose waves before sweeping them high on top her head after reaching the shore. She then changed into a black and white ensemble as she filmed content on a boat, admitting it wasn't a task for the 'faint hearted'. However, while she congratulated the winners, Stacey couldn't help but reveal how 'gutted' she was for her team who 'deserved' the award as she declared that they were 'robbed'. Fans claimed Stacey is starting to 'show her true colours' compared to her usual wholesome demeanor and told the BBC presenter to 'grow up' and that she has 'got too big for her boots'. However not everyone agreed and others believed Stacey was being 'refreshingly honest' and was simply just 'disappointed for her team'. In the original video, Stacey fumed: 'We didn't win a BAFTA. And I know I'm supposed to take it gracefully like a champ but, I'll be honest, I'm devastated!. It's not an easy show to make, Sort Your Life Out and the team work so hard to make it happen and they so deserve the BAFTA. 'The Sort Your Life Out team deserved a BAFTA and I'm devastated. I'm not saying that everyone else didn't deserve their BAFTAs, they absolutely did. 'People think making TV is really easy and it's not, so everyone deserves recognition. But I'm just gutted for my whole Sort Your Life Out family because I feel like they deserved a BAFTA. I'm gonna say it - I'm gutted!'. Going on to reveal what it takes to make their show, she went on: 'We'll pack up a house and within seven days that house is packed up, into vans, over to a warehouse, laid out on the floor, we go through it meticulously, we make sure it doesn't just get chucked away. 'We donate, we recycle, we resell things. We put it all back and try and put it in systems to help families move forward...' She also gave a shout out to the families who give up their time and open their homes to TV audiences, especially when they run the risk of being judged. Stacey's trip abroad comes after she suffered some heat recently when her followers turned on her over her ill-judged rant after losing out on a prize at the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards However, while she congratulated the winners, Stacey couldn't help but reveal how 'gutted' she was for her team who 'deserved' the award as she declared that they were 'robbed' Professional organizer and Stacey's co-star Dilly Carter penned a somewhat more gracious message after losing out on the prize, noting that she was chuffed to even be nominated. Alongside a red carpet video, she said: 'Walking out, like we walked in, with our heads high and super proud of what we have achieved as a show, as a production. 'It's so easy in these moments to feel sad because we haven't won and forget about where we actually are. In a room full of incredible talent. But in the actual room. 'Some people dream of their show being nominated so for us to have been nominated twice is unreal. So let's celebrate the show and just how far it's come. It wasn't so long ago we were just filming a pilot. 'Huge congrats to @rylan and @robrinder. Thank you for all the love and support as always. Now let's get back to filming series 6.'
