Rhode Island FC breaks through for first win at Pawtucket's Centreville Bank Stadium
— Rhode Island FC (@RhodeIslandFC)
Rafa Mentzingen answered in the 35th for North Carolina, which had won a league-best four in a row. That appeared it would be enough for a draw despite a heavy push from Rhode Island, which was credited for 11 of the match's 13 shots in the second half.

Frank Nodarse drew a penalty in the waning moments, however, and Rodriguez buried the spot kick despite netminder Jake McGuire guessing the correct direction.
CLUTCH AT THE DEATH 🥶
— USL Championship (@USLChampionship)
The victory began a run of six straight home matches over the next seven Saturdays for Rhode Island (4-6-3), including visits from the expansion Portland Hearts of Pine on June 28 and Hartford Athletic on both July 19 and 26.

Mexico Beats USA In A Soccer Final Again, This Time 5-0
Mexico keeps on winning soccer silverware over the United States, this time with a blowout win. El Tri beat the U.S., 5-0, in Sunday's 2025 Concacaf Boys' Under-15 Championship for a second straight title in that competition. All five of Mexico's goals in the tournament's final – played in Alajuela, Costa Rica – were scored by Mexican-American players. Juan Carlos Martínez Jr., who had two goals in the final and won the Best Player Award, was born in California and plays for the LA Galaxy academy. Mexico's three other goals in the final were scored by: Paxon Ruffin, born in Florida, who plays in the youth ranks of Liga MX club Monterrey; Da'vian Kimbrough (Sacramento Republic FC); and Lisandro Torres (LAFC academy). Kimbrough and Torres were also born in California. In 2023, Kimbrough signed with Sacramento, which is part of the USL Championship, as a 13-year-old to become the U.S.'s youngest soccer professional. According to ESPN, he was believed to have been the youngest professional in team sports in the major leagues in North America, including the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and WNBA. It's been a banner year for El Tri's soccer teams, especially on the men's senior side. Mexico won its first Concacaf Nations League title in March over Canada, snapping the U.S. men's national team's hold on that competition. Mexico then followed that by winning its 10th Concacaf Gold Cup in July with a 2-1 win over the USMNT. Along with the U-15 title, Mexico also won the Under-20 Concacaf title on Aug. 5. That was Mexico's 14th U-20 crown and its first since the 2015 edition. The U.S. had won the previous three editions. Mexico and the U.S. are serving as co-hosts (along with Canada) for the FIFA 2026 World Cup, and it's great to see the rivalry and talent on the pitch between the two sides continue to grow for years to come. What should we make of the Boston Celtics extending head coach Joe Mazzulla?
What should we make of the Boston Celtics extending head coach Joe Mazzulla? While the details of his current and prior contracts remain shrouded in mystery as is the policy of the Celtics, we are all but certain he was headed into a potentially tough 2025-26 regular season a lame duck coach with only the season ahead guaranteed. But well ahead of the start of the next Celtics campaign, Boston's front office went ahead and added some years to the Rhode Island native's deal to show some confidence in Mazzulla even though he has never led a team with Boston's developmental lean in such a role before. What does the decision to extend Mazzulla tell us about the way the front office sees the future of the team? Is this simply a sign they are sure he's the man for the job? Or does this hint that the Celtics plan to be back in the thick of a title hunt sooner rather than later? The folks behind the "Green With Envy" YouTube channel put together a clip taking a closer look. Check it out below! Here's how Burrillville Little League baseball is preparing for the Metro Regional
BURRILLVILLE — The Burrillville Little League baseball All-Stars earned a new title last week. Rhode Island Little League champions. The 10- to 12-year-old Little Leaguers will unveil their new moniker in the Metro Regional tournament on Saturday night in Bristol, Connecticut. Burrillville's appearance in the regional tournament will end a 53-year title drought as the Rhode Island club meets St. James-Smithtown Little League, the New York state champions, at 7 p.m. Burrillville had its final practice on Thursday night at Peck Park before departing for Bristol on Friday morning. It'll have a day to settle into its new home and toe the perfectly manicured infield dirt. It's all in pursuit of more history for Burrillville. 'The tournament has been on our minds, but it's also sad because this is our last time on [Peck Park],' Logan Rourke said. 'But at the same time, we're ready to play, have fun and hang out with the guys.' New Jersey and Connecticut have the early game on Saturday — giving the Rhode Island champs a preview of the regional game speed. If Thursday night's ending was any indication — a batting practice walk-off home run by Jayzeon Doire — Burrillville is ready for the next stage. Saturday's game will be on ESPN+, 'I watched it a couple of days ago and I said that I wanted to be there,' Doire said of the Little League World Series. 'This is my last year and it's been a great experience. 'I'm just looking forward to having fun, playing baseball and hanging out with my friends.' Easton Boucher echoed that sentiment. The left fielder is excited for the drive to Bristol and that extra time with his teammates. 'It's been fun winning districts and then states, and then going on a bus ride to Bristol,' Boucher said. 'It's been my dream since 2020. Now I finally get to go experience it with my friends.' Jace Detonnancourt began batting practice on Thursday with a few home runs that'll certainly help if it carries over into Connecticut. The ace shut out Coventry in a 6-0 triumph for the Rhode Island championship. He will likely take the mound against New York. But win-or-lose, Burrillville is already playing with house money. It climbed the state's mountain in a fashion that would make the 1972 squad proud. If the summer continues, and back-to-school shopping is delayed, these Burrillville boys won't complain. 'Winning states was awesome,' Doire said. 'We all sat for a minute and then we talked about it in our group chat — that was pretty cool.' The light rain that broke the recent heat wave, a phone call with Gov. Dan McKee and fresh tacos were part of the sendoff for Burrillville. Family and friends watched closely before confirming the final details for the weekend. They'll all be part of the festivities, as is the entire state, to support the latest Little League stars. 'It does mean a lot to us,' Rourke said of having family there. 'It might not seem like it when we're on the field, but it really does mean a lot.'
